2008 Mercedes Benz CLK

Mercedes-Benz CLK

CAR ONLINE | PARIS FRANCE - - Mercedes’ CLK will be sportier, funkier and posher, when the third-generation coupe arrives in March 2008. The two-door shares its platform with next year’s new C-class saloon, with power coming from four-, six- and eight-cylinder engines crowned by a 600bhp flagship DTM version. A cabriolet version will follow.

Mercedes-Benz CLK

What it does and how it looks

The CLK adds a sporty lustre to the C-class family – and is a licence to print money for Benz. It’s a tad cheaper to produce than an identically equipped four-door, yet its premium price yields around $10,000 more revenue per car.

The bigger CLK speaks the same funky design language as the forthcoming C- and E-class models. The details are far more modern than today’s two-door, from the split, angular headlamps to the character line running along the side. The rear window dips slightly into the more muscular side panels. Again, there’s no middle pillar and the windows are frameless.

This CLK’s proportions are more imposing, too. The nose is longer and taller, and the bonnet more sculptured. The stretched roof looks more elegant, and flows into a chunky boot.

Mercedes-Benz CLK

Soft-top drop-top

The CLK convertible is expected in autumn 2008. While BMW is moving to a folding tin-top roof for its imminent 3-series cabriolet, the Mercedes sticks with the classic canvas roof. Merc’s product planners believe it is classier and easier to package neatly, and they’re confident that the CLK’s drop-top will be as refined and secure as a coupe-cabrio roof. The other advantage is that the centre of gravity is not skewed when the lighter roof is up.

Under the skin

Being twinned with the C-class, the CLK is naturally rear-wheel drive, although with four-wheel drive potential. Its roots rule out some plush gadgets such as air suspension or active ABC anti-roll bars. But tech-heads are still spoiled for choice. The Presafe II safety system, Distronic plus cruise control, night vision, Comand II control system, Bi-Xenon plus lamps and active seats all figure.

Also mooted are ceramic brakes for the AMG versions, and a twin-clutch automatic transmission to match VW’s seamless ‘box.

The engines are largely familiar, none more so than the base model’s ancient supercharged 1.8-litre four. This may be replaced by a new turbocharged 2.0-litre that’s in the pipeline. Another new fourpot is the diesel that powers the CLK 250 CDI, kicking out a mighty 205bhp.

Group 1 says Chrysler must cut inventory

Earl Hesterberg

Reuters / September 12, 2006 - 9:00 am | DETROIT -- The Chrysler group needs to take steps to reduce its inventory of unsold vehicles to keep dealerships from throttling back on orders for the new 2007 models, the head of a major dealer group said.

"I wouldn't pick the tactic for them but the need exists," said Earl Hesterberg, CEO of Houston-based Group 1 Automotive Inc., at the Reuters Autos Summit on Monday, Sept. 11.

The Chrysler group offered its dealers some subsidies over the summer to offset the cost of carrying the oldest vehicles in their inventory but needs to go further, Hesterberg said.

"There's a Chrysler inventory issue. There has been this summer and I don't believe it's been resolved yet," he said.

Hesterberg said Group 1, which owns 98 dealerships, ended its second quarter with too many unsold vehicles from the Detroit 3. This was in part because it had expected the automakers to offer more aggressive discounts of the kind that drove 2005 sales in the summer months to record levels.

Group 1 ended June with inventory equal to 74 days of sales for vehicles made by General Motors, 90 days for Ford Motor Co. and 103 for the Chrysler group, he said.

"It's one of our bigger issues," Hesterberg said, adding that the company had targeted a reduction in its inventory of cars from the Detroit 3 to 75 days of sales on a combined basis and would ideally cut that to 60 days.

By contrast, Group 1's inventories for Toyota Motor Corp.'s Lexus luxury brand are equivalent to just eight days, Hesterberg said.

Higher U.S. interest rates have made it more costly for dealers to cover the cost of carrying inventories, typically one of the largest costs for auto retailers.

Hesterberg said Ford's move to offer zero-percent financing and subsidies to reduce costs for less creditworthy borrowers over the last weekend in August had been a "very aggressive action" to reduce its overhang of unsold 2006 models.

But he said Group 1 had been forced to order fewer new vehicles from the Chrysler group for its 13 dealers who represent the company's Jeep, Dodge and Chrysler brands.

"I think the issue with them has been oversupply. I think they've been making too many cars out of alignment with their demand since late last calendar year," he said. "Their new products like the Dodge Caliber, a fuel efficient vehicle, are going very well. But they too had a lot of eggs in the large vehicle basket."

DaimlerChrysler U.S. sales, including Mercedes-Benz, have slipped 8 percent so far this year. The company is relying on the launch of eight new models, slated to arrive in showrooms in the third and fourth quarters for a rebound.

The Chrysler group's major marketing campaign over the summer starred DaimlerChrysler Chairman Dieter Zetsche in ads intended to focus consumer attention on the American and German engineering behind the company's cars.

But critics said the ads had distracted attention from the automaker's summer sales effort, which included employee-level pricing.

Hesterberg said the "Ask Dr. Z" advertising campaign had not lifted sales at his dealerships. "We've seen no uptick in traffic," he said.

The Chrysler group said earlier this month it ended August with an unsold inventory of 502,946 vehicles, equal to a 76-day supply and down by 60,000 units from a month earlier.

Mercedes must become Mercedes again

Automaker discarded its heritage for niches, speed and sportiness

Guido Reinking | | Automotive News / September 11, 2006 - 6:00 am - - In the 1990s in Germany, Mercedes-Benz had a brilliant car commercial.

A husband arrives home late and tells his wife, "My car broke down." The wife slaps him in the face. She does not believe her husband's Mercedes could break down.

Today, nobody would understand that commercial. For many Mercedes drivers nowadays, breaking down is part of the ownership experience.

It took 90 years to build Mercedes' image of quality and less than 10 years to damage it severely.

DaimlerChrysler CEO Dieter Zetsche has been directing the brand's fate for a year. The quality of Mercedes cars has improved noticeably during that period, but a year is much too short a time to expect lasting results.

Renewing Mercedes

Zetsche has cut jobs and operating costs at Mercedes, but that was relatively easy compared to what lies ahead. His most important job is to renew the Mercedes brand.

The star emblem on every Mercedes once signified that customers were getting the safest and most reliable cars that money could buy. Mercedes owners also knew they had bought cars with the highest level of workmanship.

But that image was needlessly abandoned in favor of excessive sportiness and a gratuitous pursuit of horsepower records, coupled with dubious model decisions and an unrestrained niche strategy.

Mercedes has wasted its energy on new vehicles such as the B-, R- and GL-class models and the SLR McLaren.

No one really knows what the brand stands for anymore.

Chasing niches

The Maybach ultraluxury sedan highlighted the misguided trend of chasing niches.

The Maybach damaged Mercedes' claim that the S-class sedan was the best luxury car in the world. It also maneuvered the company into an awkward situation: Mercedes cannot quietly drop the limping Maybach brand. Its customers are important people, and they are not likely to go along with that.

Until recently, Mercedes, with its Smart and Maybach brands, risked losing its way. The task now is to raise the profile of the core Mercedes brand.

Mercedes has to build the most reliable car -- not the fastest.

Zetsche's statements during the past few months indicate that he recognizes that. But it takes years, not months, to turn around the image of a brand such as Mercedes.

There will be setbacks along the way.

2007 Dodge Dakota Continues to Stand Alone as the Largest, Strongest and Most Capable Mid-size Pickup Truck

DUI MOTORI.COM - - The 2007 Dodge Dakota continues to deliver best-in-class torque, towing capacity and interior space. With versatile body styles and powerful engines – including the only V-8 engines available in the mid-size pickup truck segment – Dodge Dakota delivers bold pickup styling and capability. “Dodge buyers like the right size of the Dodge Dakota, which is more fuel efficient and maneuverable than a full-size pickup but can still get the big jobs done,” said George Murphy, Senior Vice President – Global Brand Marketing, Chrysler Group. “The 2007 Dodge Dakota lets our owners work hard and play hard by providing the largest and strongest mid-size pickup truck on the market.” The 2007 Dodge Dakota offers its 4.7-liter V-8 engine with standard E-85compatibility, earning the Flexible Fuel Vehicle (FFV) designation that provides customers the option of operating their Dakota on ethanol, gasoline or a mixture of the two.

DESIGN

“The Dodge Dakota is instantly recognizable as a Dodge,” said Trevor Creed, Senior Vice President – Design, Chrysler Group. “The bold design reinforces Dodge Dakota’s size and power advantages over the competition with full-size styling cues. Dakota defines the look for its segment, just as the Dodge Ram does for full-size trucks.”

Dodge Dakota’s grille conveys a powerful and prominent brand statement with its signature Dodge crosshair as the focal point. The sharply defined, large hood-mounted grille descends into the front bumper, creating a strong visual effect. An air dam below the front fascia completes the bold look, reducing air flow under the vehicle and reducing drag.

Dakota Club Cab® and Dakota Quad Cab® models feature more interior room than all other mid-size pickups. The Dodge Dakota Quad Cab offers the most interior space and is the only four-door model in its class to offer six-passenger seating.

Dodge Dakota’s capability advantage continues with more room between the wheel wells, compared with the competition, and maintains its bed-wall height for easy loading. The Dodge Dakota Club Cab features a 6-foot, 6-inch bed, and the Dakota Quad Cab a 5-foot, 3-inch bed.

ENGINEERING

“With bold styling and a variety of versatile body and powertrain options, the 2007 Dodge Dakota gives mid-size truck buyers exactly what they want,” said Mike Donoughe, Vice President – Body-on-frame Product Team. “With more torque, towing capability and interior room than the competition, Dodge Dakota continues to deliver full-size pickup capability in a mid-size package.

“New for 2007, Dodge Dakota offers customers more fuel choices with its flexible-fuel, 4.7-liter V-8 engine, which is compatible with E-85 fuel.”

The 2007 Dodge Dakota takes its place at the head of the mid-size pickup truck class with a hydroformed, fully boxed frame, coupled with coil-over shock absorbers, and an independent front suspension that provides precise ride-and-handling dynamics. Dodge Dakota achieves a best-in-class tow rating of 7,150 lbs. and a Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) of 11,700 lbs.

With two V-8 offerings, the 2007 Dodge Dakota dominates the mid-size pickup truck segment in torque and towing. The 4.7-liter V-8 Magnum® is rated at 230 horsepower (172 kW) and 290 lb.-ft. (319 N•m) of torque, while the 4.7-liter High Output Magnum V-8 provides even more performance with 260 horsepower (190 kW) and 310 lb.-ft. (420 N•m) of torque.

A powerful 3.7-liter Magnum V-6 rated at 210 horsepower (157 kW) and 235 lb.-ft. (319 N•m) of torque is a segment-exclusive standard feature on the 2007 Dodge Dakota.

2007 Dodge Charger SRT8: The 'Charger on Steroids' Redefines the Modern American Muscle Sedan

DUE MOTRI.COM - - Back in the day, the measure of a muscle car was elapsed time in a quarter-mile. Not anymore. The 2007 Dodge Charger SRT8 offers a complete performance approach with its infusion of Street and Racing Technology (SRT) DNA into the Dodge formula of “bold, powerful and capable.”

With the Dodge Charger – which has re-established the famous Dodge performance nameplate – as a starting point, adding SRT DNA means 6.1-liter, 425-horsepower (317-kW) HEMI® power, world-class ride and handling, benchmark braking, functional and aggressive-looking exterior enhancements, and a race-inspired interior.

“The 2007 Dodge Charger SRT8 offers more than big-bore SRT power under the hood,” said Kipp Owen, Director – Street and Racing Technology, Chrysler Group. “It’s an all-around performance package: superb handling, tremendous braking and no-nonsense performance enhancements to the exterior and interior.”

The 2007 Dodge Charger SRT8 is capable of all-around performance that is simply remarkable in a muscle sedan: 0-60 mph in the low 5-second range, quarter-mile time in under 14 seconds, braking distance from 60 mph in approximately 110 feet and 0.89 g on the skid pad. The Dodge Charger SRT8 is also capable of accomplishing SRT’ssignature performance test of 0-100-0 mph in less than 17 seconds.

“WHAT’S NEW FOR 2007”

Exterior

  • New colors: TorRed; Super Bee Special Edition — with Detonator Yellow

Interior

  • Optional Rear Seat Video system, including Kicker Mobile Surround Sound

Packages

  • SRT Track Experience—Standard

DESIGN

Trevor Creed, Senior Vice President – Design, Chrysler Group: “The Dodge Charger’s overall design suggests speed and performance, attributes that are accentuated in the Dodge Charger SRT8. SRT touches such as the front air dam, hood scoop and rear spoiler are not only visual hallmarks of a true muscle car, they’re also functional performance enhancements.”

That functional performance is reflected in the exterior of the 2007 Dodge Charger SRT8 in the front fascia, which integrates ducts that help direct fresh air to cool the brakes, and an air dam to reduce lift. The hood is equipped with a scoop to funnel cool air into the engine compartment.

The rear fascia features integrated lower strakes to direct air flow, and aggressive cutouts to accommodate dual 3.5-inch exhaust tips. A dramatic deck lid spoiler set on dual stanchions increases downforce for high-speed stability and traction.

Race-inspired interior appointments in the 2007 Dodge Charger SRT8 start with power-adjustable, deeply sculpted and highly bolstered sport seats in the front, fitted with performance suede inserts to hold occupants during maneuvering. Rear seats have matching performance suede inserts. All seats have contrasting red stitching.

Full instrumentation includes a 180-mph (300-kph) speedometer, a tachometer and a temperature gauge. A light-emitting-diode (LED) display within the gauge cluster is driver-configurable for oil temperature, oil pressure and tire pressure readouts.

ENGINEERING

Kipp Owen, Director – Street and Racing Technology, Chrysler Group: “The Dodge Charger SRT8 starts with a 6.1-liter HEMI engine making 425 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque, and continues with race-bred technology including gas-charged dampers, tuned anti-sway bars and Brembo brakes. And Dodge Charger SRT8 follows the SRT credo of offering the best performance at the best price.”

The 2007 Dodge Charger SRT8’s 425-horsepower (317-kW), normally aspirated 6.1-liter HEMI produces 420 lb.-ft (569 N•m) of torque, achieved by adding cubic inches, increasing the compression ratio, and redesigning the cylinder head and intake and exhaust systems for better flow and increased engine speed.

Power for the SRT 6.1-liter HEMI is channeled through a five-speed automatic transmission with specially calibrated, driver-selectable Auto Stick, which offers fully automatic or manual shifting selection.

Chassis enhancements on the 2007 Dodge Charger SRT8 include SRT-tuned dampers, tailored spring rates and suspension bushings, and large-diameter anti-sway bars. The ride height of the 2007 Dodge Charger SRT8 is one-half inch lower than the Dodge Charger. Handling is engineered for performance with an Electronic Stability Program (ESP) tuned for the 2007 Dodge Charger SRT8.

Benchmark braking performance comes from Brembo four-piston brake calipers on all four wheels, gripping a vented disc – 360 mm x 32 mm up front, with 350 mm x 26 mm in the rear.

DCX cuts Hemi production

Elizabeth Conley / The Detroit News

Cars are shown parked outside Chrysler's abandoned Trenton plant.

Chrysler curbs building the legendary engine as it pulls back on SUV and truck output as sales lag.

Josee Valcourt | The Detroit News - - DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Group has cut production of its legendary Hemi V-8 by nearly 20 percent as more consumers decide to trade power for fuel efficiency and the company prepares for lower light-truck sales through the year.

Chrysler recently lowered Hemi production to 1,300 a day from 1,600 at its Saltillo factory in Mexico, company officials said.

The reduction indicates the automaker has been forced to pull back production on its profitable Hemi -- along with its standard 4.7-liter V-8 engine -- as it whittles SUV and truck output in the third and fourth quarters due to sluggish sales.

The production cut to the popular engine comes as the company struggles with lagging SUV and truck sales, the vehicles which traditionally carry the powerful motor.

The Dodge Durango, a full-size SUV, has seen sales fall 41.1 percent for the year and the Dodge Ram pickups have been down 11.7 percent. Overall, light truck sales for Chrysler are down 12.9 percent for the January through August period, compared with 2005.

"At the beginning, when everything was going gangbuster for Chrysler, that engine was their most profitable engine by far," said Bill Visnic, an editor for Ward's Engine and Vehicle Technology Update. "That's how they were getting folks to upgrade vehicles. Now, if no one wants that engine -- bang! There goes a nice chunk of your incremental profit."

However, Chrysler officials downplayed the production cut.

"I don' think it's a precursor of what we might expect in 2007 but much more of a reaction of what we're seeing in the third and fourth quarter," said Chrysler spokesman Mike Aberlich.

The iconic powerplant, which comes in two sizes; a 5.7-liter V-8 and the 6.1-liter, 425-horsepower V-8, has been on a roll. Since its reintroduction in 2001, it helped push the Ram pickup to record sales of nearly 450,000 vehicles in 2003.

Chrysler has successfully offered the engine as an option for some of its cars such as the Chrysler 300C, Dodge Charger and the Dodge Magnum, reporting that 40 percent of those vehicles were upgraded with a Hemi.

"That means that the engine means something to consumers," said Chrysler spokesman Kevin McCormick. "It resonates with them, which means that 40 percent of the time they choose the (Hemi) engine."

But the power comes with a price, lower gas mileage. The perception remains that big engines are gas hogs even though the Hemi has cylinder-deactivation system to improve fuel-efficiency by 20 percent and gives some vehicles highway mileage in the mid-20s. However, other vehicles still cannot top 19 mpg on the highway.

"There's always concern about V-8 engines and how they're going to fare in the long run," said Paul Lacy, an engine analyst for Global Insight Inc. "But for the Hemi, I don't think you're going to see a whole lot of dipping for future production."

Global Insight is forecasting 516,000 Hemi engines to be built this year, which is the same as 2005. But production is projected to dip to 495,000 Hemi engines in 2007.

"This is a reflection of vehicle production," Lacy said. "This is not a reflection of them specifically having less demand for Hemi engines."

Many Chrysler dealers agree, saying the engine still wins over some customers.

"Consumers aren't really shying away from the Hemi," said Gordon Farhat, a general sales manager at Westborn Chrysler Jeep in Dearborn. "You say Hemi and a consumer's eyes get a little bigger. The Hemi sticks out in people's mind."

The engine accounts for 28 percent of vehicle sales at the Dearborn dealership

However, consumers are more mindful of gas prices, said Anthony Pratt, an analyst with J.D. Power and Associates. But the swing from V-8 engines overall to six- and four-cylinder ones also has to do with an array of vehicle choices in segments such as SUV-like crossovers, Pratt said.

Farhat agrees that consumers are looking for different features in new cars and trucks. While he sees many customers' eyes light up when they hear that car's got a Hemi in it, they also have other concerns. "Now they're asking about miles per gallon."

Tomahawk bike finally gets green light from Chrysler

John Neff | Autoblog.Com - - Who could forget the Tomahawk concept bike that debuted at the 2003 North American International Auto Show? I was present at the show and standing right next to monstrous motorcycle as then DaimlerChrysler COO Wolfgang Bernhard swung his leg over the 8.0-liter V10 engine and turned it on. The aural assault from a completely exposed Viper engine is something you don't easily forget. Word is coming out of Edmunds' Straightline blog now that the Tomahawk, which is essentialy the Viper V10 with four skinny wheels and a handlebar, is going into limited production as a Chrysler model. The 500-horsepower Chrysler Tomahawk will likely cost at least $250,000, though that number's not official and we don't know how many will be built.

Large high resolution gallery and video of the Tomahawk being ridden can be found after the jump.

Chrysler Group Announces Record-Setting Month for Certified Pre-Owned Vehicle (CPOV) Sales in August 2006

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Sept. 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Chrysler Group reported that its Five Star dealers posted a new Certified Pre-Owned Vehicle (CPOV) August sales record of 9,728 units, increasing 8 percent from August 2005 sales and rising 12 percent from July 2006 results. Year-to-date sales also set a record of 79,078 units, increasing 10 percent from year-to-date sales last year.

Strong sales of the Chrysler 300/300C and the Chrysler PT Cruiser helped to raise total Chrysler brand sales 13 percent to 3,289 units in August. Jeep® brand sales rose 26 percent to 2,432 units for the month. Dodge brand sales fell 4 percent to 4,007 units in August, yet year-to-date sales were up 1 percent for the brand.

"There are two important components of a CPOV sale, the skilled service technician to conduct a 125 point inspection and assure the vehicle is held to rigorous standards, and the sales professional to effectively communicate the value of owning a CPOV," said Peter Grady, Director - DaimlerChrysler Motors Remarketing. "Our Five Star dealers have managed to excel in both areas, which is evident by our consistent month-over-month sales success in the certified used-vehicle segment."

Chrysler Group offers one of the most comprehensive Certified Pre-Owned Vehicle programs in the industry. For a vehicle to be certified under the Chrysler Group's used vehicle program, it must be a 2001 through 2006 model pre-owned vehicle with less than 65,000 miles and pass a stringent 125 point inspection. Chrysler Group's CPO vehicles are backed by an 8-year/80,000-mile powertrain limited warranty, a 3-month or 3,000-mile Maximum Care(TM) warranty, 24-hour, 365-day full roadside assistance and a $35 per day rental car allowance, in addition to a CARFAX(TM) Vehicle History Report and a CARFAX Buyback Guarantee(TM).

Marketed as "Brand Spankin' Used(TM)," Chrysler Group's CPO vehicles are sold only through Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge dealerships which have earned the automaker's Five Star Certification. Five Star Certification is a comprehensive validation of the dealership's facilities, operational processes, salesperson and technician training accreditation as well as customer satisfaction survey ratings. Approximately 2,100 Chrysler Group dealerships in the U.S. are certified Five Star dealer

Big drop puts oil under $65

Crude falls on expectations that OPEC will maintain high production levels, signs of healthy inventories and cooling tensions with Iran.
September 11 2006: 11:45 AM EDT

LONDON (Reuters) -- Oil dropped over $1 Monday, falling below $65 for the first time in nearly six months, as OPEC looked set to keep pumping at high rates to ensure world consumers were well-supplied despite a 20 percent fall in prices since mid-July.

The market was also pressured by Iran's offer to halt temporarily its atomic work, slowing economic growth, robust fuel stocks and a sluggish hurricane season."U.S. supply is comfortable and demand is about to enter a comparative lull. The Iran premium is dwindling too as the negotiations between Iran and the U.N. drag on," said Tobin Gorey of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.

U.S. light crude for October delivery slid $1.30 to $64.95 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The front month contract lost more than 4 percent last week, and the last time oil closed below $65 was March 27.

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) met Monday in Vienna, and is widely expected to keep current production limits unchanged at 28 million barrels per day.

For more than a year OPEC has been pumping at or near its fastest rate for 25 years. But forecasts that demand for OPEC oil will decline in 2007 are beginning to worry some in the group that pumps a third of the world's oil.

But Saudi Oil Minister Ali Al-Naimi, OPEC's most influential voice, said oil demand would remain healthy next year.

"Market fundamentals are very sound," he told reporters. "We are beginning to see a slight decrease in economic growth, very slight ... It is nothing alarming."

Some analysts predicted that prices have peaked.

"Although risks remain, we now think that the $80 peak we had called is indeed the peak and that the ebb of crude oil and refined products prices has started," said Morgan Stanley in a research note.

Bearish sentiment was exacerbated on cautious optimism over Iran's nuclear dispute with the West.

Iran's chief nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani offered a two-month suspension of Tehran's nuclear enrichment program in weekend talks with EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana, an EU diplomat said on Sunday.

But it was unclear if Iran would meet the Western demand that it suspend enrichment before the start of any talks on trade incentives aimed at ending the nuclear stand-off. An Iranian official denied Tehran had offered any freeze on enrichment.

"The market seems to be reacting to the cautiously positive outcome of Iran's meeting with the EU," said Mike Wittner of Calyon Bank.

"I don't think the OPEC meeting holds a whole lot of significance for the market today. It's really a bit of a footnote, as a rollover seems to be a done deal."

DCX Stock update

0955 GMT [Dow Jones] Merrill Lynch says the market may be failing to credit the progress DaimlerChrysler (DCX.ETR) has made in turning around its Chrysler division. Says despite a rapid recovery at Mercedes and actions to improve the situation at Smart, concerns over Chrysler have caused DaimlerChrysler stock to slump by 18% since February. The brokerage believes Chrysler's 3Q remedial actions and rolling product renewal program will bear fruit, adding that new products are promising. This could "soon cause investors to reconsider their position on one of the sector's biggest laggards." Therefore keeps Daimler rated buy, with EUR58 target. Shares -1.1% at EUR39.69. (HAD)

With 300 Horsepower, All-new 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4 to Dominate Sport-compact Market

Chrysler Group’s Street and Racing Technology (SRT) group takes the SRT4 reputation to new heights with the introduction of the all-new, 300-horsepower 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4.

The all-new 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4’s formula begins with the powertrain, essentially explained by four numbers: 85, 125, 300 and 260. The 85 is how much more horsepower is available compared with the original Dodge SRT4, which results in 125 horsepower per liter for a total of 300 horsepower (224 kW). The final number is 260, as in 260 lb.-ft. (353 N•m) of tire-smoking, push-back-in-your-seat torque. Those numbers add up to a 0-60-mph time of under 6 seconds.

“With signature SRT all-around performance, the all-new 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4 is a true tuner car right from the manufacturer,” said Kipp Owen, Director – Street and Racing Technology, Chrysler Group. “It will offer another signature trait of SRT: best performance for the best price.”

DESIGN

Trevor Creed, Senior Vice President – Design, Chrysler Group: “From the very first sketches of the all-new 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4, we wanted an aggressive, SRT-signature look featuring its bold grille, hood scoops and intercooler and brake-cooling ducts. The result is a much more aggressive look than the standard Dodge Caliber.”

An all-new front fascia below the signature Dodge crosshair grille incorporates functional performance features including an air dam, ducts that direct air to cool the brakes and a wide center inlet that provides air flow to the radiator. The 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4’s hood incorporates a functional scoop that brings cooling air into the engine compartment, and a pair of extractors that exhaust hot air.

The rear fascia features lower vertical strakes that direct underbody air flow out the back of the vehicle, contributing to more stability at speed. Aerodynamic efficiency is also aided by an integrated spoiler above the rear glass. The spoiler is nearly 60 percent larger than that on the standard Dodge Caliber, and is tuned for smoother air flow and downforce while maximizing the rear view.

Inside, unique SRT touches include sport seating with aggressive bolstering and performance-fabric inserts to hold occupants during spirited driving, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with a carbon fiber pattern on the upper portion. The seats, steering wheel and leather shift boot feature contrasting stitching. The center-stack-mounted shifter includes a lift ring to engage reverse, unique to the Dodge Caliber SRT4, as well as a leather-finished shift knob.

The instrument panel features three gauge “tunnels” outfitted with performance-oriented instrumentation, including a tachometer, 200-mph speedometer, and water-temperature and fuel gauges. A turbocharger boost gauge is located on the left side of the instrument panel.

ENGINEERING

Kipp Owen, Director – Street and Racing Technology, Chrysler Group: “From its 300-horsepower, turbocharged World Engine to its race-bred suspension and incredible braking, the all-new 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4 combines SRT performance with the Dodge Caliber’s innovative packaging and appointments.”

The 2007 Dodge Caliber’s all-new World Engine is produced at the Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance facility in Dundee, Mich. The engine’s aluminum 2.4-liter block is specially machined for increased water and oil flow, and its aluminum cylinder head is equipped with unique high-temperature exhaust valves and variable valve timing for efficient combustion and flow.

Power goes to a six-speed manual transmission equipped with a limited-slip differential for uniform side-to-side power transfer, which is capable of handling up to 300 lb.-ft. (407 N•m) of torque.

The all-new 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4 rides on SRT-unique, 19-inch cast-aluminum wheels with 225/45R19 W-rated Goodyear tires. Upgrades to the standard 2007 Dodge Caliber’s MacPherson strut front suspension include new suspension knuckles and tuned dampers with revised spring rates. Unique front and rear sway bars keep body roll to a minimum during hard cornering.

The Electronic Stability Program is uniquely calibrated for the 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4 to provide excellent directional stability in all driving modes. In addition, stability is enhanced with a ride height one-half inch lower than the standard 2007 Dodge Caliber.

The 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4 benefits from braking-system components sourced from mid-size and larger cars. Vented brake rotors for the 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4 are 340 mm x 28 mm in front and 302 mm x 10 mm in the rear.

The anti-lock brake system was uniquely calibrated for the all-new 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4’s performance to maintain directional stability without wheel lockup.

Notebook: 2007 Chase rules unknown

Greg Engle | Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service |

RICHMOND, Va. -- Now that the field has been decided for the 2006 Chase for the NASCAR Nextel Cup, what will the 2007 version look like?

That's anyone's guess at this point.

Earlier this season, NASCAR chairman Brian France hinted that he wanted to "make adjustments" to some aspects of the Chase in 2007, but that the changes would not be dramatic.

Some believe that the changes could include moving the cutoff for entry into the Chase from the current 10-car plateau to 12 cars. However, NASCAR spokesperson Kerry Tharp said Saturday that nothing is certain.

"We are still in (the) discussion stage, so there's nothing as of yet," Tharp said. "I wouldn't expect any changes to be announced before the end of the season."

New Charger nose should mean more Dodge wins

The new nose recently submitted and approved by NASCAR for use on the Dodge Charger in 2007 will correct an imbalance created by a rule change from NASCAR in 2004, a year prior to the reintroduction of the Charger.

According to Michael Accavitti, director of Dodge Motorsports, the original Charger nose design was based on a car that had a spoiler over six inches tall. That nose had depressed eye sockets (prominent indentations) crucial to helping maintain a balance in the car based on that spoiler height.

Then came a NASCAR rule in 2004 mandating that spoilers be dropped to 5 1/2 inches. Accavitti believes that spoiler change mandated in 2004 upset the balance of the Charger.

"We find when we talk with our drivers is that this imbalance creates instability when they're driving the vehicle," Accavitti said. "They explained to me that it's like the car's on a knife edge."

Since its reintroduction in 2005, the Charger has struggled to maintain a competitive balance with the other car makes. Leading up to Saturday's Chevy Rock & Roll 400, Dodge has won just nine of the 61 races in that span. Chevrolet has won 31 times, with Ford scoring the remaining 21.

A Dodge spokesperson said that NASCAR would not allow them to resubmit the original design in 2004, a fact NASCAR officials confirmed Saturday at Richmond. The new nose, according to Accavitti, has no eye sockets, a major improvement that should correct the imbalance.

"It will allow the drivers to spend less time fighting that (imbalance), trying to keep the car out of trouble. And that should translate into more victories."

Is OPEC Going to Pump up Prices?

AP NEWS | AUSTRIA - - OPEC is likely to keep its current oil production targets steady at its meeting next week, experts say, despite concerns that high crude prices threaten to put the brakes on global economic growth.

Even with prices more than $10 a barrel off their July highs and no shortage of supplies, economists concede that jittery market sentiment doesn't leave the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries with much choice. Cutting output would drive prices even higher, and pumping more isn't an option for most members already producing at maximum capacity.

"They're not powerless. But there are some things they can do and some things they can't," said Jason Schenker, an economist with Charlotte, N.C.-based Wachovia Corp., who expects energy prices to moderate with slowing economic growth and predicts "no real change in output."

"Inventories have been building, and without major hurricanes in the United States, we're looking at energy markets likely to move lower in the fall and winter," he told The Associated Press. "They really don't have that much room to do much."

Key members of the 11-nation cartel, who meet Monday in Vienna, have said they would like to see prices closer to $65 a barrel. That's already well above the $50-per-barrel benchmark that many members long have contended is optimal.

Oil has been edging lower since light sweet crude hit a record $78.40 a barrel on July 14, two days after fighting erupted in Lebanon. It was trading at around $67 a barrel on Friday.

Global production has taken a hit from BP's leak-prone Alaskan oil pipelines, outages in Iraq and Nigeria -- where militants have attacked oil infrastructure -- and concerns over Iran's escalating nuclear standoff with the U.N. Security Council.

But though supplies remain ample, crude prices are still high, said Eshan Ul-Haq, chief analyst at PVM Oil Associates in Vienna.

"There's enough oil. There's no scarcity," said Ul-Haq, who doubts OPEC will do anything as long as prices remain above $50.

Prices are unlikely to drop to that level this year, he added, but they could start plummeting next year if production from non-OPEC nations such as Angola, Brazil and Azerbaijan rises significantly as expected in 2007. "All this is likely to put pressure on prices," he said.

Ahead of Monday's meeting, Saudi Arabia -- the world's biggest oil exporter, and the only OPEC member with significant spare production capacity -- signaled that the group is likely to maintain its current production quota of 28 million barrels a day. Algeria, too, has said the cartel doesn't really have a choice.

U.S. crude inventories fell 2.2 million barrels last week to 330.6 million barrels, but stocks remain 6.2 percent above their levels a year ago -- the highest since 1998 -- largely because of higher refinery production, the U.S. Department of Energy said this week.

"We're starting to see a lot of oil on the market, so supply is not the issue, and prices are coming down," said Matthew Cordaro, an energy specialist and business professor at Long Island University in New York.

That, Cordaro said, distills OPEC's influence to providing "moral support for the market -- one way or the other."

OPEC's output quota, which does not include Iraq, meets about 40 percent of the world's demand for crude.

The markets are more susceptible to events in the Middle East, "being the tinder box that it is," and to hurricanes that could damage refineries in the Western Hemisphere, he said.

Analysts said it's probably too early to gauge the impact of a newly discovered petroleum pool beneath the Gulf of Mexico that experts say eventually could yield anywhere from 3 billion to 15 billion barrels -- a find Cordaro conceded "does challenge the notion that we're all tapped out."

As OPEC members assess where the oil markets are heading, they're also expected to discuss whether to appoint a new secretary-general, a mostly symbolic post now held by Nigeria.

Iran has been lobbying for the job, arguing that as the cartel's No. 2 producer, it has a right to a top leadership slot. OPEC has shut Iran out of the position since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
