Germany: No End Near on EADS Stake Talks

Associated Press 11.17.06, 7:31 AM ET | Talks aimed at determining Germany's strategy toward a stake in Airbus parent EADS are unlikely to conclude this month, a government official said Friday.

The government has been in talks for weeks centering on the fate of a stake currently held by DaimlerChrysler AG (nyse: DCX - news - people ). The automaker wants to reduce its holding to 15 percent from 22.5 percent - raising concern over how to preserve a delicate French-German balance at European Aeronautic Defence and Space Co.

"The talks are continuing," government spokesman Thomas Steg told reporters.

Observers should "assume that we will have nothing to announce before the end of November ... that we will take the necessary time and certainly need November for these talks," he added.

The German government had indicated that it was considering buying part of the stake held by DaimlerChrysler through a state-owned bank. However, it has stressed recently that it prefers a solution involving private investors - which it has not identified.

The discussion over the stake comes after Toulouse, France-based Airbus said wiring problems with the flagship A380 superjumbo would delay its delivery by two years and announced a radical restructuring program.

DaimlerChrysler Discusses China Venture

Associated Press 11.17.06, 9:21 AM ET

DaimlerChrysler AG said Friday it is holding talks with China's Chery Automobile Co. about a possible joint venture that would make cars for the Dodge brand for sale in the United States.

CEO Dieter Zetsche was asked during a visit to Beijing about the status of talks with Chinese automakers to beef up Chrysler Group's model lineup and offer smaller, more fuel-efficient cars for the Dodge brand as demand for SUVs and larger models wanes.

He said the company was in talks with several possible partners, but when asked if Chery was the preferred partner, he said: "It's fair to say."

Zetsche said he was optimistic that a decision would be reached in the "not so far future," according to DaimlerChrysler (nyse: DCX - news - people ). However, he added that he could provide no timetable "because you can only talk about your own position. It takes two to tango."

Zetsche was in China ahead of the Beijing auto show this weekend.

China has the world's second-largest car market after the United States, with 7 million new vehicle sales per year.

In September, DaimlerChrysler formally opened its first factory to make Mercedes-Benz and Chrysler sedans in China - part of the company's $1.9 billion investment in China.

The Beijing factory, which produces Mercedes E-Class and Chrysler 300C sedans, as well as Mitsubishi (other-otc: MSBHY.PK - news - people )'s Outlander sport utility vehicles, is a joint venture with a Chinese partner, state-owned Beijing Automotive Industries Corp.

Cost-cut plans send DCX stock to 6-year high

November 17, 2006

BY KATIE MERX | FREE PRESS BUSINESS WRITER

Shares of DaimlerChrysler AG hit their highest point on the New York Stock Exchange in more than six years Thursday, closing at $61.97, up $1.12 on the day.

Analysts speculated that the stock price is climbing on anticipation that the automaker will either cut costs or divest itself of its North American division.

"I think it's up over expectations that they'll decide to dump Chrysler," said Bradley Rubin, an auto analyst at BNP Paribas in New York City. "I think the company is getting a lot of pressure from the board to fix it quickly or just dump it."

Chrysler lost $1.5 billion in the third quarter and is expected to finish the year with a $1.2-billion loss, following a shift away from the large trucks and SUVs that have long been its bread and butter. Chrysler is working on a business optimization plan that includes cutting as much as $1,000 from the cost of every vehicle.

Bank of America analyst Ronald A. Tadross said it was cost reductions -- not a sale -- that convinced him to boost his price target for DaimlerChrysler. Tadross increased his share price forecast to $58 from $49 to reflect an expected $2.5 billion in restructuring savings from 2008 to 2010 at Chrysle

DaimlerChrysler Hits New 52-Week High

Associated Press 11.16.06, 2:28 PM ETShares of DaimlerChrysler AG hit a fresh 52-week high Thursday for the second-consecutive day, as the automaker marked five-straight days of gains.

In afternoon trading, DaimlerChrysler (nyse: DCX - news - people ) shares were up $1.10 to $61.95 on the New York Stock Exchange, after climbing as high as $62.24 earlier in the day.

On Wednesday, DaimlerChrysler's stock closed up 89 cents at $60.85, after setting a 52-week high of $60.94 earlier in the session.

Bank of America (nyse: BAC - news - people )'s Ronald A. Tadross on Wednesday boosted his price target for the German-American automaker to $58 from $49, but maintained his "Neutral" rating for the stock.

Tadross also increased his earnings predictions for the company to reflect an expected $1.5 billion in incremental restructuring savings at the company's Chrysler division.

"DaimlerChrysler's restructuring initiative at Mercedes should help improve margins but we believe Mercedes will have to cut prices to address the $2,500 cost of ownership gap against competition," Tadross wrote in a note to investors.

"This could take some time to play out but increased competition from Japanese brands in Europe could trigger the pricing actions."

Tadross said that expectations of 33 percent earnings growth in 2007 could be "optimistic," because the Chrysler division's results may not significantly improve and commercial truck sales declines could cut into its profit.

Speeder's Nightmare: Brabus CLS Rocket police car

Last year, the German Federal Traffic Ministry and the Association of German Automobile Tuners (VDAT) created the Tune It Safe! program, the goal of which is to encourage drivers to adopt safe and legal tuning practices (and presumably have them employ established German tuning firms to do so). To highlight the program, TechArt created a Porsche 911 Carrera S police car for the Essen Motor Show, where it would be displayed as the world's fastest police car.

With the Essen show coming up again next month, Tune It Safe! had to follow up the TechArt Porsche with something equally impressive, and turned to another well-known supertuner from Deutschland -- Brabus -- for the assist. The result, as you'd expect, is far from disappointing.

Sporting full police livery in the Tune It Safe! booth this year will be one of Brabus' jaw-droppingly powerful CLS V12 S Rocket sedans. With 730 twin-turbocharged horses stampeding under its hood, the Rocket lives up to its moniker with a 225.19 mph top speed.

God forbid you should ever see one of these things materialize in your rearview with its gumballs flashing, because outrunning it is not on your list of options.

2009 Mercedes-Benz GLX65

2009 Mercedes Benz Mlk Front

Mercedes-Benz is finally getting ready to introduce its first small SUV. After scrapping efforts based on the tiny A-class and the Smart ForMore and rejecting a partnership with corporate cousin Jeep, Mercedes-Benz is using the next-generation C-class wagon as the basis for its small crossover, which it plans to call the GLK.

Don't let that first letter mislead you. Like its chief rivals, the BMW X3 and the forthcoming Audi Q5, the GLK is a four-wheel-drive on-roader. If you insist on extended mobility, you can get all-weather tires, hill-descent control, a mildly raised suspension with skid plates, and some outdoorsy cosmetics but no extra diff locks or a low-range transfer case. The GLK also will be available in two-wheel-drive guise, if only in combination with the two least powerful engines.

Chassis-related changes over the C-class 4Matic include a new steering rack, bigger brakes, and a modified independent suspension that permits more wheel travel for extra axle articulation. A handling package (adaptive dampers, quicker steering, fatter antiroll bars) will be available, and wheel sizes should top out at twenty inches. Curb weight should fall between 3400 and 3700 pounds.

The U.S. market likely will see the following models: the GLK280 V-6 4Matic (228 hp); the GLK350 V-6 4Matic (268 hp); and the GLK320 CDI V-6 4Matic (221 hp). All will be fitted with a seven-speed manu-matic. Of course, no Mercedes-Benz lineup would be complete without an AMG version, so the near-500-hp GLK63 AMG 4Matic should come along shortly thereafter.

First National Police Charger Cruiser Crash and Death

Accident report to fault trooper

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — A report on a collision that killed a state trooper and a truck driver last month will indicate that the trooper made an improper turn across Interstate 44, officials said.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol was expected to release the six-page report Thursday morning, OHP spokeswoman Kera Philippi said.

Trooper William McClendon, 37, was trying to do a U-turn on Interstate 44 on Oct. 1 by cutting through a gap in the concrete median.

Only law enforcement and emergency officials are legally permitted to try this maneuver. It is prohibited for the general motoring public.

Before McClendon’s Dodge Charger could make it through the barrier, it was crushed by a tractor-trailer driven by Hussein Haji-ege Osman, 25.

The crash happened near Claremore on the Will Rogers Turnpike, a part of I-44 connecting Tulsa with southwestern Missouri.

McClendon, an eight-year patrol veteran, was eastbound on I-44 on patrol when he received an emergency call.

After that call was canceled, he attempted to turn around through an opening in the barrier, typically located every two or three miles, when he was hit by Osman’s eastbound rig.

The report also will indicate McClendon’s emergency lights were activated, that Osman was speeding, failed to yield to an emergency vehicle and was operating a vehicle with unsafe brakes, the OHP said.

But Harpreet Sidhu, owner of the truck and Osman’s best friend, said the rig was in good working order.

Sidhu owns Arsh Transport, a Bakersfield, Calif.-based produce-trucking company.

Mary Pinelo, office manager at Arsh Transport and Sidhu’s wife, said Wednesday the report backs up the company’s claims the truck was safe to drive.

“No one should be allowed to make a turn there,” Pinelo said.

Dan Case, executive director of the Oklahoma Trucking Association, said Wednesday it appeared investigators were trying to blame the driver or the company for faulty brakes.

“As we all know, you can’t stop a 70,000-pound vehicle on a dime,” Case said.

The Highway Patrol also had said it was unclear why McClendon made the turn, but that it was possible he saw something on the other side of the road that caused him to turn around, such as a speeding car.

The next exit was at Adair, nine miles away.

Photographs taken at the accident scene reveal dark skid marks that show Osman tried to brake and swerve away from McClendon’s cruiser.

“I drove a truck all my life, I understand how it works,” McClendon’s brother, Richard, said Wednesday. “It’s a bad deal any way you look at it”

Richard McClendon said blame should be shared between the trucker and the trooper, and that his brother loved his job.

“He always told me if he went, it would be in his car,” he said.

Case also laid part of the blame for the accident on McClendon’s Dodge Charger, which he said is notorious for having a blind spot.

“Those aren’t suitable for duty on the turnpike,” Case said. “I was wondering what they were thinking when they bought the Dodge Charger.”

In its investigation, the highway patrol analyzed information from a digital “black box” inside McClendon’s cruiser that records things like speed, when a driver hits the brakes or when the airbags deployed to help piece together the cause of the crash.

Last year, three people were killed in two accidents on the Turner Turnpike in eastern Oklahoma County after attempting similar U-turns. Since 2004, there have been at least 10 fatalities on Oklahoma’s roads near turnabouts, according to the highway patrol.

New Mercedes-Benz E-Class launched in Inda

THE HINDU TIME | Hyderabad, Nov. 16 (PTI): Luxury car major DaimlerChrysler India today announced the launch of its new generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class in the city.

The E-Class features about 2,000 parts that are new or further developed from its predecessor. It is priced at Rs 43 lakh (ex-showroom).

The debutant replaces its hugely popular predecessor, which had sold over one million units globally since its introduction in 2002.

DaimlerChrysler executive will head staff for key House panel

Harry Stoffer | | Automotive News / WASHINGTON -- Dennis Fitzgibbons, director of public policy in DaimlerChrysler AG's Washington office, will become chief of staff for the House Energy and Commerce Committee in the next Congress, according to a memo made available to Automotive News today.

The committee handles many issues of importance to the automobile industry. And committee chiefs of staff are considered to be some of the most influential appointees in Congress.

The memo informing committee members and staff of the appointment is from U.S. Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich. Dingell is scheduled to return to the chairmanship of the powerful committee after Democratic victories in the Nov. 7 election.

Dingell's memo says Fitzgibbons will join the committee staff as an adviser Dec. 1. He will become chief of staff at the beginning of the new year, when Democrats take control of the House, Senate and congressional committees.

Dingell wrote that all committee members will benefit from Fitzgibbons' "experience, expertise and judgment."

Fitzgibbons worked for committee Democrats from 1988 to 2000, as communications director and deputy staff director, before joining DaimlerChrysler.

Dingell's office confirmed Fitzgibbons' appointment.

Money cannot buy effective innovation, says new study

[Date: 2006-11-16]

A new study has found that money alone cannot buy effective innovation and guarantee the high return on investment sought by companies.

The annual Global Innovation study of the world's largest 1,000 corporate research and development (R&D) spenders found that less than 10% of companies are 'high leverage innovators', producing significantly better performance per R&D dollar spent over a sustained period.

The 'Smart Spenders: The Global Innovation 1000' report assessed the influence of R&D spending on corporate performance and discovered insights which suggest that the relationship between R&D spending and corporate performance is not a simple one.

For only 94 high-leverage innovators, success relied on their ability to squeeze benefits from R&D spending, their economies of scale and their capabilities as 'Masters of the innovation value chain' in ideation, project selection, development and commercialisation of their final product.

Furthermore, the study found no statistical relationship exists between the number or quality of patents and a company's overall financial performance. Current important innovations in television technology are still based on patents from the first half of the 20th Century.

The report states: 'conventional wisdom often seems to view R&D as a predictable black box that automatically translates today's innovation investments into tomorrow's profits, even if nobody quite understands how it works...Innovation often does lead to higher performance, but the process isn't automatic.

'Many companies' R&D efforts are unfocused. Money is wasted 'reinventing wheels' that others have already rolled out. Good ideas get stuck in developmental bottlenecks. And promising innovations never get to market because of flawed understanding of customers' needs, and poor marketing and investment planning,' reads the report.

It goes on to say that 'there is no silver bullet. If these high achievers have one thing in common, it seems to be a focus on building multifunctional, company-wide capabilities that can provide them with sustainable competitive advantage. They design their innovation investment for the long run, and create superior growth and profitability over time.'

The European companies among the top 20 global R&D spenders were DaimlerChrysler, Siemens, GlaxoSmithKline, Volkswagen, Sanofi-Aventis, Novartis, Nokia and Roche Holdings.

However, the 10 European companies that made it onto the list of 49 global 'high leverage innovators' were Adidas, Cadbury Schweppes, Christian Dior, Meda, Phonak, Recordati, Smith & Nephew, Synthes, Trelleborg and the Volvo Group.

Chrysler executive Ralph Gilles faces the task of redesigning trucks and SUVs.

Chrysler star tackles trucks

Designer of popular 300 will now put his personal stamp on a revamped Dodge Ram.

Chrysler Group executive Ralph Gilles, one of the hottest designers in the auto industry, did so well on his last assignment -- heading the studio that produced the Chrysler 300, one of the most eye-catching sedans to come out of Detroit in decades -- that his bosses have rewarded him with what might be an even bigger challenge: reinventing pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles amid falling sales.

Gilles, Chrysler Group's new vice president of Jeep/Truck and Component Design, knows he faces a tough task. The pickup-truck segment had seen softening in recent months because of high gasoline prices, and sales have fallen by 10.4 percent through October, according to Autodata Corp. Some consumers who once considered a large pickup as a replacement for a conventional sedan appear to be having second thoughts, industry analysts say. Large SUVs have also taken a hit, while sales of midsize SUVs, the category that includes the Jeep Grand Cherokee, have been in free fall as consumers shift toward smaller SUVs and sedans.

At the same time, the competition is intensifying. General Motors Corp. has launched redesigned Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks. And a revamped Toyota Tundra -- Toyota Motor Corp.'s first serious attempt to compete in the full-size pickup-truck market in the U.S. -- will be introduced next year.

Auto analyst Kevin Tynan of Argus Research Co. says although pickup-truck buyers are the most loyal of any other segment, Asian automakers have proved in the past that they can take away market share from the domestic manufacturers. "I don't think the domestic manufacturers have faced the most intense competition yet," Tynan says. "It's going to get even more difficult."

Chrysler Group, a unit of DaimlerChrysler AG, is also under intense pressure to produce product hits as it tries to turn itself around from the $1.48 billion operating loss it reported for the third quarter and reduce an inventory glut, particularly in the SUV and pickup-truck segments. In October, sales for the Chrysler Group fell by 3 percent while domestic rivals made gains.

Launch of Ram crucial
The 36-year-old Gilles (pronounced jeels) admits he has never been a truck kind of guy. So he has been researching pickup trucks for one of the first places on which he will put his personal stamp: a revamped Dodge Ram. The launch of a new Ram is crucial for the Chrysler Group because the truck is the biggest selling model line for the company. Year-to-date sales through October have weakened by 11.8 percent, according to Autodata.

Last year, Gilles went down to Texas for three days to immerse himself in America's largest pickup-truck market, which included a night at Billy Bob's Texas in Fort Worth. At the self-described "world's largest honky tonk" where there are Willie Nelson concerts and live bull riding, Gilles hung out with Billy Bob's customers to talk to them about how they use their pickup trucks and how the vehicles could be improved.

"These were cowboys, but they were fashion-conscious. I left there feeling supercharged," says Gilles, a sports-car fanatic who used to spend his spare time racing a Dodge Viper before he switched to a Spec Neon.

A laid-back guy who watches "Desperate Housewives," Gilles occasionally swears during meetings and often jokes with colleagues. During a meeting to review a future SUV, he jokingly put his head on a colleague's shoulder who said he could meet one of Gilles's requests.

Mike Donoughe, vice president of Chrysler's body-on-frame product team, describes Gilles's style as one of relaxed intensity. "He's hyperkinetic," Donoughe says. "And what that translates to is he doesn't come across as stuffy, so that opens up channels of communication that otherwise might be closed."

Gilles a role model
Because of his quick ascent at Chrysler, Gilles, a Canadian native of Haitian descent, has become a role model for aspiring car designers and for young Haitians. He has been asked to be head of the Haitian Day parade in Miami and gave a high-school commencement speech earlier this year.

Though only 36, Gilles considers himself an old-timer at Chrysler with 14 years at the automaker.

His latest project, the Dodge Ram, now stands out in the segment with a big-fendered, blocky front end.

For the future Ram, Gilles says he is focusing on giving the truck a more aerodynamic design, which will improve fuel economy and will be tested in Chrysler's $37.5 million wind tunnel. (He says the design team spent three months working on the side-view mirrors on the Chrysler 300 to maximize aerodynamics.)

The trend in trucks and SUVs in recent years has been to make them look tougher, bolder and more aggressive with each redesign. But Gilles says you can only take that so far before it becomes cartoonish.

The future Dodge Ram will still look bold and aggressive. But Gilles also notes that pickup trucks, like cars, are becoming more like homes, with contractors needing space for files and room for a laptop computer. That means designers will spend a lot of time focusing on a refined interior with technological features, like an iPod adapter.

Gilles is also closely examining the letters and pictures he receives from truck owners. Impressed by shots of a souped-up 2002 Dodge Ram, he called the owner in Maryland and spent 20 minutes talking to him about what he did to the truck and why.

According to Gilles, the perfect design is one of timeless beauty and one that creates tension but doesn't scare a consumer away. "I've turned down designs that were too good, too pleasing," he says.

"I like designs that some people will love and some people will hate. It has to stimulate you one way or another."

His other big project is monitoring consumer reaction to the new Jeep Compass and Patriot SUVs. He says the small sport-utility vehicles will show where Chrysler can take the Jeep brand, which has long been known for its rugged vehicles like the Jeep Wrangler. Because of the struggling market for full- and midsize SUVs, the Jeep brand has seen sales drop by 3.9 percent through October, according to Autodata.

2 new police cars have Escondido cops revved

UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER | November 16, 2006

ESCONDIDO – The Police Department is putting a little more muscle into its car fleet.

Yesterday, the City Council approved the purchase of two 2007 Dodge Charger patrol cars that have officers pretty excited.

CRISSY PASCUAL / Union-Tribune
Escondido Police Officers Tom Phelps (left) and Steve Higgins just finished test-driving a loaner version of the two swift Dodge Chargers that the city is buying for the force.
The car has a 340-horsepower, 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 engine and looks arguably more menacing – and just plain cooler – than the classic Ford Crown Victoria that officers now drive.

The Charger's slanted headlights and in-your-face grill almost give the impression of a snarling glare when viewed head-on.

Officers have been lining up to test-drive a loaner version of the car since last week.

“I liked the power,” said Officer Steve Higgins, who took it for a spin yesterday.

“It's the new thing,” said Sgt. Don Shumate, who helps oversee the agency's fleet of about 130 cars. “The guys are liking it. The general opinion so far seems to be that it is a good car, nimble, quick.”

Costing the department about $25,000 each, the Charger is about $1,000 more than the Crown Victoria, with its 250-horsepower, 4.6-liter V-8 engine.

The department has already set aside the money in the current budget for the cars.

The traffic unit will likely get first dibs on the two cars, Shumate said.

The department is one of hundreds around the nation to try the Charger, and several have begun adding them to their fleets, including the Oceanside Police Department and the San Diego Sheriff's Department.

“Anytime we make a major equipment change – and a police car is a very important piece of equipment of an officer – we need to be very selective,” Shumate said. “We want the feedback.”

Some of the drawbacks officers have already brought up include the smaller trunk size for equipment and back-seat space for prisoners.

Oceanside recently bought two of the cars and is in the middle of a six-month evaluation period to determine if they will order more.

The car's official Web site boasts that the Charger is ideal for pursuits, with acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in six seconds and a top speed of 160 mph.

“You get up to speed quicker, which is good if you're going after somebody,” said Officer Tom Phelps, who took the car on the highway and dirt roads.

It gets 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway, the same as the Crown Victoria.

The hottest car in the department thus far has been its black-and-white 1998 Chevy Camaro, which the traffic unit uses.

It will be phased out soon because of its high mileage, Shumate said.

Report: VW brand chief Bernhard to resign Thursday

Wolfgang Bernhard

Reuters / November 15, 2006 - 2:00 pm
FRANKFURT -- Volkswagen brand chief Wolfgang Bernhard is expected to tender his resignation on Thursday, Nov. 16, when the six-member steering committee of the carmaker's supervisory board meets, a German newspaper reported.

Without citing sources, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung wrote that the VW brand chief is reacting to a boardroom coup that threw out CEO Bernd Pischetsrieder and replaced him with a rival executive, Audi boss Martin Winterkorn.

A reshuffle of senior level management planned by Winterkorn could drastically impinge on Bernhard's authority in the group.

Volkswagen declined to comment on the report.

DaimlerChrysler sells property management unit

Reuters / FRANKFURT -- DaimlerChrysler has sold property management unit DaimlerChrysler Objektmanagement und Service GmbH (DEBEOS) to Denmark's ISS as it divests non-core activities, the carmaker said today.

It gave no financial terms for the sale of DEBEOS, which employs 581 staff and had 2005 revenue of $121 million (94.5 million euros).

"The sale is part of the ongoing measures to increase efficiency and optimize portfolios, with the aim of improving the return on net assets," a DaimlerChrysler statement said.

The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter, pending anti-trust approval, it said.

Oil rises on sharp supply drawdown

Gasoline and distillate stockpiles fall by over 3 million barrels each, but crude stocks gain despite OPEC cut.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Oil prices rose Wednesday after the government said supplies of crude oil rose but reported a big drawdown in gasoline and distillate stocks.

U.S. light crude for December delivery gained 67 cents to 58.95 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Oil had traded 42 cents higher just prior to the report's release.

In its weekly inventory report, the Energy Information Administration said crude stocks rose by 1.3 million barrels last week. Analysts were looking for a gain of 300,000 barrels, according to Reuters.

Distillates, used to make heating oil and diesel fuel, fell by 3.6 million barrels while gasoline supplies dwindled by 3.7 million barrels. Analysts were looking for a 400,000 barrel drop in distillates supplies and a 100,000 decline in gasoline stockpiles.

Oil prices have fallen more than 20 percent from a trading high of $78.40 reached in July.

[Note: After OPEC agreed to cutback 1.2 million barrels of crude per day, North America Oil companies are following the same suit to help maintain the 60.00 dollar per barrel pricing. However, this is risky buisness since it still killing the world ecomony. Suggestion to those companies, the correct pricing should be around 45.00 dollar per barrel. Forget the greed or quick profits and start thinking about the individual. In the end, this will only bring us closer to rid of the current monoply in using gasoline.]

Four-door Wranglers have waiting lists at many dealers

Unlimiteds Limited

By BRADFORD WERNLE | AUTOMOTIVE NEWS

AutoWeek | Published 11/14/06, 9:10 am et Dealers have been waiting a long time for the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. Now that it's arriving, customers may have to wait as well.

Jeep dealers say the 2007 Unlimited, the first four-door Wrangler, is the hottest vehicle in showrooms. Jeep dealers, who have struggled along with dealers of the other Chrysler group brands to sell excess 2006 inventory, welcome a hot new product.

John Schenden, owner of Pro Chrysler-Jeep in Denver, said customers have to wait eight to 10 weeks.

"I've sold 20," he said. "I've got orders for another 18 to 22."

Alan Helfman, owner of River Oaks Chrysler-Jeep in Houston, said the new Wrangler has been selling "beyond our wildest imagination."

"I've got 30 orders as we sit right now," he said. "I could sell all I could get. Truly, there would not be Hummer dealerships if we had this five years ago."

A Chrysler source said that dealers had just a 39-day supply of Wrangler Unlimiteds as of Oct. 31 and that compares with 91 days for the 2007 two-door Wrangler.

Lineup of Mercedes-Benz USA's model range

eMercedesBenz - - Mercedes has announced today that they have just achieved a record sales milestone: the brand has delivered 25 million passenger cars to customers worldwide since 1945. According to Dr. Eberhard Haller, vice president and manager of the DaimlerChrysler plant in Sindelfingen: "The first postwar Mercedes-Benz passenger car rolled off the line here in Sindelfingen more than 60 years ago. That vehicle marked the beginning of the ascent of Mercedes-Benz to become the world's most valuable and successful automobile brand. Today's handing over of the 25-millionth Mercedes-Benz is a special occasion that will further motivate both the staff in Sindelfingen and the entire Mercedes-Benz organization."

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE

Sales milestone for Mercedes-Benz: 25 million passenger cars delivered

  • Positive sales development at Mercedes-Benz demonstrates the long-term success of the brand's product strategy

  • 25-millionth vehicle handed over to the owner of a Munich taxi company at the Sindelfingen Customer Center

Stuttgart, Nov 14, 2006
Mercedes-Benz is celebrating an extraordinary anniversary: The brand has delivered 25 million passenger cars to customers worldwide since 1945. Dr. Klaus Maier, Executive Vice President Mercedes Car Group, responsible for Sales and Marketing: "The positive sales development at Mercedes-Benz during the last 60 years impressively demonstrates the long-term success of our product strategy. No other premium automaker boasts such an attractive portfolio so geared toward customer demands."

The milestone vehicle – a new generation E-Class – was handed over to the owner of a Munich taxi company at the Mercedes-Benz Customer Center in Sindelfingen. "The first postwar Mercedes-Benz passenger car rolled off the line here in Sindelfingen more than 60 years ago," said Dr. Eberhard Haller, Vice President and Manager of the DaimlerChrysler plant in Sindelfingen. "That vehicle marked the beginning of the ascent of Mercedes-Benz to become the world's most valuable and successful automobile brand. Today's handing over of the 25-millionth Mercedes-Benz is a special occasion that will further motivate both the staff in Sindelfingen and the entire Mercedes-Benz organization."

The cornerstone of the successful postwar history of Mercedes-Benz was laid in 1946 with the launch of the Mercedes 170 (W 136 Series). Since that time, more than 11.5 million customers from all over the world have chosen a Mercedes-Benz upper-range model. The current seventh generation of the E Class is also a great success: Some 1.1 million units have been sold since its market launch in 2002, making it the best-selling vehicle in its segment.

The S-Class symbolizes automotive luxury since its market launch in 1965. The flagship model from Mercedes-Benz dominates the competitive field in the luxury segment ever since. In particular, the S Class continues to demonstrate its outstanding role as a trendsetter for the entire auto industry when it comes to safety. The S-Class has recorded sales of more than four million sedans, coupes and roadsters since 1965, making it the undisputed top-selling automobile in the luxury segment.

The launch of the 190 Series – the so-called Baby Benz – in 1983 enabled Mercedes to successfully position the first mid-range premium vehicle, while also setting new technological standards in that segment. Today, the C-Class is the best-selling Mercedes-Benz model series and a key factor in guaranteeing the brand's success around the world. Some 6.9 million units of the C-Class family have been sold worldwide since 1983.

With the Mercedes-Benz M-Class, which has been built at the DaimlerChrysler plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, since 1997, Mercedes-Benz was able to successfully establish a premium vehicle in the sport utility segment as well. Demand for the M-Class exceeded all expectations from the very beginning, and production capacity in Tuscaloosa has been continually expanded as a result. The Alabama plant also produces the R Class since 2005 and the GL-Class since 2006. Together with the classic G Class off-roader, Mercedes-Benz now offers the most varied product program in the premium SUV segment. Mercedes-Benz has now sold more than one million SUVs worldwide.

The year 1997 also marked the production launch of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class with the aim of using a new vehicle concept to open up an additional market segment for the brand with the star. Innovations such as the still-unique sandwich concept, the standard-fitted Electronic Stability Program (ESP), and a new design and space concept continue to set standards for the compact class today. The A Class was already a million-seller in its first model cycle. The B-Class, which in 2005 became the second model series produced at DaimlerChrysler's Rastatt plant, has followed up on the success of the A Class, with more than 150,000 customers opting for the vehicle in the first 15 months after its market launch.

Carney: Del. must make Newark auto plant more cost effective

Chrysler Aspen

Posted Tuesday, November 14, 2006 at 10:35 am

Delaware has to figure out ways to make it more cost effective for DaimlerChrysler AG to keep its Newark plant operating, Lt. Gov. John Carney Jr., said at a breakfast meeting today near Christiana.

Carney, who was addressing the New Castle County Chamber at the Hilton, said there are a number of costs associated with running the Newark plant which make it less competitive than plants in other parts of the country. Among the key issues the company has told the state it needs to look into are worker’s compensation reform, the gross receipts tax and asbestos litigation.

Chrysler, the financially-strapped American arm of the German automaker, is under increasing pressure to review of all its operations in this country and rein in its costs by as much as $1,000 per vehicle. Analysts have said plants with sagging sales such as the one in Newark, which makes the Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen, may be on the chopping block. That leaves the future of the 1,900 workers at the plant and the businesses that depend on it in a vulnerable state.

“The prospect of it closing is a big deal — there is no question about that,” said Carney, who is running for governor in 2008. “We are all doing what we can to keep it open.”

Chrysler 300 Cars Equipped With Hella's Adaptive Cruise Control

DETROIT, Nov. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The luxurious Chrysler 300 Limited and Chrysler 300C are the first vehicles offering tier-one automotive supplier Hella's LIDAR-based (LIght Detection and Ranging) adaptive cruise control (ACC) technology as optional equipment late in the 2007 model year.About half the cost of standard, radar-based ACC systems, Hella's unit is a key component of its driver assistance systems (DAS) technologies that are designed to assist drivers so that they may concentrate on the task of driving. Drivers remain in control of their vehicles at all times and can switch the ACC on and off as required

ACC systems make driving more comfortable," said Jean-Francois Tarabbia, CEO of Automotive Electronics for Hella KGaA Hueck & Co. "When activated, Hella's system allows drivers to keep their vehicles at a specified distance from the traffic in front. Our ACC system automatically brakes or accelerates the vehicle depending upon traffic conditions."Hella's ACC system allows drivers to be more comfortable, instead of manually re-adjusting their vehicle's speed as is often required with conventional cruise control systems.

Hella's ACC also offers significant safety advantages by helping to make sure vehicles stay at a specified distance and provides drivers a warning by automatically triggering the brakes.
Using modern, opto-electronic measuring technology, Hella's ACC employs a LIDAR sensor that has a range of nearly one-and-a-half football fields (up to 500 feet) in clear-weather conditions.

The unit also takes inputs from the vehicle's speed, steering and yaw-rate (which are used for stability systems) sensors.
With high, lateral resolution that not only detects the distance to an object, Hella's ACC system also detects the object's side-to-side position and dimensions."We are proud to have our system installed as an option on DaimlerChrysler's popular Chrysler 300 Limited and 300C sedans," Tarabbia said.

"A number of other vehicle manufacturers also are contemplating using our ACC unit. Chrysler's installation is just one of a number of recent developments where electronics -- which we used to call 'advanced' driver assistance systems -- are going onto mainstream cars and will make radical improvements to congestion on the roadways.

"
Hella's DAS strategy combines a number of applications; including an ultrasonic-based parallel parking system, rear-end collision warning, lane- departure warning (LDW), rearview cameras and sensors with advanced image- processing software, according to Tarabbia.

Vehicles equipped with these features could detect potential accident situations, provide warnings or, like the ACC system, automatically engage a vehicle's brakes to maintain a pre-set distance between vehicles, he explained.

"Our long-term objective is to greatly reduce traffic accidents and injuries by providing safety-system devices for the broadest possible range of vehicles," Tarabbia said.
Motor vehicle accidents kill an average of 42,000 people each year, according to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Vehicular accidents cost society an average of $230.6 billion annually.

Hella, a global supplier, develops and manufactures components and systems for lighting and electronics for the automotive industry, including advanced driver-assistance systems enhancing safety and comfort. In addition, joint- venture companies produce complete vehicle modules, air-conditioning systems and vehicle electric systems. Hella is also one of the world's largest companies selling automotive aftermarket parts and accessories, with its own sales companies and partners in more than 100 countries. Annual consolidated sales for the Hella Group total $3.8 billion.
Hella is one of the 100 largest industrial companies in Germany.

A total of 24,000 people are employed in 65 production facilities, production subsidiaries and joint-venture companies. More than 2,900 Hella engineers and technicians work in research and development. Customers include all of the world's leading automakers and system manufacturers, as well as the automotive aftermarket.

Report: VW brand chief Bernhard considers resigning

Reuters / FRANKFURT -- Volkswagen brand chief and reform driver, Wolfgang Bernhard, is seriously considering stepping down after the carmaker appointed Martin Winterkorn as future Volkswagen AG CEO, a newspaper said today.

Quoting company sources, business daily Handelsblatt said Bernhard had already in May threatened internally to resign if Winterkorn became CEO.

Volkswagen last week appointed Winterkorn, the head of Audi, as new CEO, replacing Bernd Pischetsrieder, who will resign at the end of the year.

The paper said Volkswagen's supervisory board would like to keep Bernhard but that relations between him and Winterkorn were cool.

The firm declined to comment on the report.

Chosen by Pischetsrieder to head the VW brand, Bernhard has been at the forefront of VW's campaign to slash costs and jobs at the group's troubled western German operations.

Bernhard is responsible for delivering $9 billion (7 billion euros) in gross earnings improvements at the VW brand by 2008, and has aggressively looked to prune benefits and extend working hours for the roughly 100,000 workers at the six traditional VW plants in western Germany.
