2009 Dodge Roadster 'Codename PW27' showing in Geneva 2007?

Hemi Blog - - As you can guess, out of the three cars left that auto occult insider artist Mark S. rendered, there is but one left - dubed 'PW27'.

According to one insider, nicknamed the next 'B'Segment as DODGE ROADSTER, this gem should be debuting sometime within the next coming year at an European Auto show. We suspect that it would be 2007 Geneva International Auto Show since it is based on the Dodge Hornet/Polo platform and maybe built by a DaimlerChrysler sub-contractor in China who is xurrently building Jeeps. Thus leaving the Paris Auto Show for the 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser.

Looking at o2ho, DCX insider, the engine/platform listing shows that this PW27 will receive some heathy performance - 2.4ltr Turbo Motor [code ED4]. Not bad for little stout roadster. If it the same measure of performance thats going into the Caliber SRT4, then I am game for this car.

Stay tune more updates as soon it is more clear.

AMC makes a comeback as a 'Cheap-no-thrill' Brand?

HEMISPERICAL BLOG, DamilerChrysler AG, Stuttgart, Germany - - You never know what to expect these days in the automotive industry as the ‘WIND BLOWS’ in myriad of different direction, an insider who name will be kept secret, including Internet forum alias, works the corporate side of DaimlerChrysler, held a brief discussion on the future expansion of this global corporation. One question that was raised was the ongoing speculation of a ‘cheap thrill’ brand to compete against Toyota’s Scion line. As he nodded, his mouth parted with a large grin in shaking his head in a vertical fashion. Hmm…quite revealing that there is some truth to this rumor that been floating since the last three years or so.

Well, I was taken back on his motion in seeing previous reports by CEO of DaimlerChrysler AG, Dieter, on numerous occasions that there is no brand in the making. For me, I had to ask the obvious question: “Is there a brand resurrection in the foreseeable future that will be added to the Chrysler line to compete against Scion?” As he looked around the room and then back with a stern voice came, “Yes”. Have you ever felt chills running down from your head to the back of your neck? I did! It was moment of truth hitting me directly in the face. Besides the questioning of a future brand model lines up to CY2012, my penitence of prying the brand name is too resistible. I didn’t know what to think or fear corporate reprisal if the word was out on the street of future divulge information on what is coming and pointing back at our ‘X’ person. According to an informant at Allpar.com, Chrysler bigwigs held a meeting not long ago over the issue of spy pictures, inside information, and lists that reveal future model productions, names, and so forth. I made mentioned of this thread to him to see his reaction.

Now this was stunning - - - he mentioned a so called ‘Hit List’ of names, Internet sites, Internet users’ alias that DC corporate security has drafted to quell this problematic issue since the days of http://www.car-truck.com/ . “You are one of them…” He stated. He went on to say, “They simply don’t know how or what to do in your case versus inside company informants or suppliers releasing product information or pictures.” Well, I don’t receive any monetary funds for writing, images, or divulging information on a particular subject maybe a safe guard. Interesting though, what was mentioned by him, is the cropped picture of the ‘Dodge Rebel’, ‘Dodge Colt’, and the previous SRT4 sketches, how much attention it received from upper management of DaimlerChrysler AG CEO himself. Not to forget those in North America corporate bigwigs. This was nothing more than information hunch that there is something to the design aspect of Mitsubishi products that had many Chrysler design cues. Then Autoweek broke the story of the Pacifica Advance Design Studio involvement of the Lance Evolution X and other Mitsubishi products. Back to the brand story, I was hesitating to ask which brand is being planned for a comeback but had to ask that ‘million dollar’ question. He said, “Watch the trademark posting.” I said, “What?” “You going to find that posted trademark names under various categories and soon make the final post in the ‘Automotive Vehicles’ category.” I was in shock. Under our own noses, I had been seeing a particular name that keeps popping up for toys, clothing, parts, and so forth. Never in my right mine did I think that this brand will make a come back to America in a million years.

Welcome back - - AMERICAN MOTORS - - date planned is 2010. Is this the beginning of the cheap thrill brand? I was caution though; winds can change in a couple years or so.

Premium small cars next big thing?

John LeBlanc, For CanWest News Service Published - - mid the layoffs, plant closings and general hand-wringing surrounding Ford's Way Forward turnaround plan, according to The car Connection, it could also mean accelerating the impending release of some interesting rides.

During the presentation of Mark Fields, Ford's president of the Americas, clay models of the Fairlane people-mover (a Wind-, er, Freestar replacement concept shown at the 2005 Detroit auto show) and the Refl ex coupe concept (a small, rear-drive coupe from the Detroit show) were front and centre.

And with Ford telling anyone within earshot that premium small cars are the next big thing, it's likely the current European Ford focus (which shares its mechanicals with the Mazda3/5 and Volvo S40/ V50) is on its way to North America earlier than 2010, as planned.

HEAVY DROOLERS WELCOME
If the Chrysler Group's newly announced Chrysler Aspen, Dodge Caliber or Jeep Wrangler had you drooling with anticipation, no worries -- they can take it.
All three will be the fi rst in the company to offer YES Essentials seat fabric, which repels stains, controls odours, reduces static electricity and takes out the garbage (OK, that last feature I made up).

According to Chrysler, the fabric has something called "dual-action technology" to repel such nasty stains as coffee, red juice, lipstick or even permanent marker.

So, if personal hygiene isn't one of your roommate's strong suits, you can now offer him a ride, as the upholstery also controls bacteria-based odours inside the vehicle, inhibiting the growth of mould, mildew and germs.

NEW BOND, FAMILIAR CAR
It really isn't fair, is it? In the next Bond fl ick, a remake of Casino Royale coming in November, not only does the new 007, Brit Daniel Craig, get both great gadgets and babes to play with, once again, he's also getting an Aston Martin to drive. Craig will be at the wheel of the new Aston DBS in the fi lm, which he's already taken for a spin at Aston headquarters in England.
Except for brief stints with BMWs and Lotuses, an Aston has been Bond's usual ride since 1964 with Goldfi nger.

Two-mode hybrids versus diesels

AUTOGREEN BLOG NEWS - - If people thought high gas prices spelled the demise for the large SUV and truck industry, they are sadly mistaken. Automotive curmudgeon Jerry Flint writes how the segment plays an important role in sustaining the domestic automakers financially and is the one in which they'll soon be unleashing their greatest advantage.

The advantage is the two-mode hybrid engine. Developed through a three-way collaboration between General Motors, DaimlerChrysler, and BMW, the engine not only provides up to a 25 percent increased fuel economy compared to a V-8, but provides additional power to haul large or heavy loads. Even better, two-mode hybrids have been optimized for highway as well as city driving. Hybrids by Ford, Honda, and Toyota are designed primarily for fuel economy especially in city driving. GM will probably roll out the new engine first in its large SUVs like the Suburban while Chrysler will install the engine in its Dodge Durango. BMW and Mercedes-Benz (the other half of DaimlerChrysler) are considering implementing the engine in their luxury vehicles.

Automakers who were not part of the two-mode hybrid development are looking at diesel technology in compensation. Diesel provides many similar benefits: high mileage and plenty of torque. U.S. environmental laws, though, have proven to be a real stumbling block. Flint sees no clear winner between the two technologies or if there will be any competition at all: in one of his four scenarios, competitors may license the two-mode technology for their own use. Regardless what ultimately happens, he sees trucks and SUVs continuing to play a role in domestic automakers' futures.

Oil hits record as Israel attacks

By Chris Flood, FT.COM NEWS - - Oil prices surged to a record high on Thursday as violence in the Middle East escalated after Israel launched air strikes against the Lebanese capital, firing “at least six rockets” at the runways of Rafik al-Hariri International Airport in Beirut.

IPE August Brent rose more than 1 per cent to a record $75.45 a barrel before easing back slightly to $75.31.

Nymex August West texas intermediate also rose more than 1 per cent to a record $75.89 a barrel before edging back to $75.75 in electronic trade.

The escalating violence in the Middle East adds to ongoing geo-political tensions over Iran’s nuclear enrichment programme and concerns over North Korea’s missle development programme.

The Israeli stock market was affected by the upswing in violence with the benchmark TA-25 index down 3.7 per cent to 752.96 while the broader TA-100 index fell 4.1 per cent to 763.64.
The Israeli currency was also weaker with the sheckel trading 1.7 per cent lower against the dollar at Shk4.3675.

The geo-politcal tensions saw gold firmer at $650.90 a troy ounce from New York’s late quote of $649.25.

Analysts have warned that oil prices could spike to $100 a barrel if the situation in the Middle East continues to deteriorate against a background of extremely strong demand fundamentals.

On Wednesday, the International Energy Agency said growth in demand was expected to rise more quickly through 2011 than it had for a decade. The IEA forecast that the world would need an extra 1.57m barrels a day more oil to supply economic growth in 2007, up from the projected growth of 1.21m barrels a day this year.

Robots meant to increase efficiency slow production

Alex Gary, ROCKFORD REGISTER STAR, BELVIDERE — Last winter, contractors installed more than 700 robots in the DaimlerChrysler assembly plant’s body shop as part of a $419 million investment to make the plant the most flexible and automated of the company’s 14 North American factories.

The Swedish-made ro-bots were intended to make the place more efficient. Instead, it turns out they are the main reason the Belvidere operation has fallen behind on production of the Dodge Caliber and Jeep Compass, according to the person in charge of manufacturing for the Chrysler Group.

The fact the plant isn’t meeting production targets came to light July 3 when DaimlerChrysler officials announced sales of the Caliber dropped 2.6 percent from May to June. The sales dip was not because the car isn’t popular; it may be the most sought-after domestic new car in the past three years. It was because workers at the plant aren’t turning out enough of them.

Frank Ewasyshyn, executive vice president of manufacturing, said in a telephone interview from Chrysler headquarters in Auburn Hills, Mich., that software issues are causing frequent shutdowns in the body shop, some for just a few minutes but many for 45 minutes or more.

“This is the most ambitious product launch we’ve ever had,” Ewasyshyn said. “We’re doing way more than we’ve ever done, and it isn’t like ‘Geez, we didn’t think things would go wrong.’ ”
While Ewasyshyn said the company expected some rough going, an executive at Troy, Mich.-based Harbor Consulting, said her sources in the industry are saying the problems are worse than the company anticipated.

“They are having to burn considerable overtime to try to meet the production targets,” said Michelle Hill, director of benchmarking in North America for Harbor. The company produces the annual and influential Harbor Report, which tracks which plants are most efficient at producing vehicles. The Belvidere operation has long been a star for Chrysler in the Harbor publication, annually ranking as the company’s most efficient.

Hill said that’s unlikely to be the case when the next report comes out in 2007.

“From what I’m hearing, it’s not people issues, it is the body shop,” Hill said. “The company apparently wasn’t nearly as ready to launch when it did. They need to get this fixed. Chrysler has shifted a lot of investment into Belvidere.”

Officials at the three Dodge dealerships in Winnebago, Boone and Ogle counties — Anderson Dodge in Rockford, Brian Bemis Auto Mall in Oregon and Belvidere Motors in Belvidere — have heard that the plant is running anywhere from a 70,000 to a 130,000 Caliber backlog.

What’s going wrong
The automated body shop in Belvidere was set up to handle as many as four different models. As parts pass through, each robot does its specific task and then passes the part on to the next robot. When working correctly, it’s a symphony of manufacturing perfection. The company proudly featured the body shop, its robots silently turning, soldering, sparks flying, during a media day in February.
The problems stem from the computer programs that coordinate the robots. Ewasyshyn said the multiple configurations of the Compass and Caliber are causing “interface issues.”
He said every robot has an “interference zone” and if a part breaches it, the system automatically shuts down. He said if a part just passes through the interference zone without touching, workers simply restart the system. If the parts touch, however, then technicians have to program the system so that it doesn’t happen again the next time the body shop encounters the same parts configuration.

“If the parts touch, getting everything ready to go again takes a half-hour to 45 minutes,” Ewasyshyn said. “Just with the Caliber and the Compass, we have eight different variants when you factor in the European versions with the different steering wheel sides and the diesel versions. We have 700 robots and a lot of different permutations to work through.”

The multiple configurations, won’t go away soon, and in fact will get more complicated. The Jeep Patriot is scheduled to go into production in the third quarter of the year as well as the Caliber SRT4, a 300-horsepower version targeting the muscle-car market.

“Each one is going to add a whole new set of twists, and we’ll have to get them sorted out,” Ewasyshyn said.

In terms of quality, Ewasyshyn said the Caliber launch is “the best in the company’s history in that respect.”

Indeed, dealers have reported few buyer complaints on the Caliber, six months into its life. The Dodge and Plymouth Neon, which the Caliber and Compass replaced, had two major recalls by this time in their first year more than a decade ago.

Third shift starts Sunday
Overall, the DaimlerChrysler plant has been a steady source of good news since company officials announced in January 2005 they were going to renovate the plant and give workers a bevy of new models to produce. The Caliber, an aggressive-looking cross between an SUV and a sporty coupe, has been very well received. In June, its fifth month of availability, Calibers were spending an average of just 11 days on car lots nationwide, the same time it was taking to sell them in March. That’s virtually unheard of in the industry. Typically, in each successive month cars spend more time on lots before selling because production is increasing and the wow factor is wearing off.

Those statistics caused Tom Libby of the Power Information Network, a J.D. Power and Associates company, to call the Caliber the strongest domestic car launch in the past 37 months.
Workers began making retail versions of the Jeep Compass May 30, and the more suburban-friendly Jeep began showing up on dealer lots in late June. Initially thought to be somewhat of a risk, early reviews of the Compass have been positive.

The plant was down to 1,650 workers on one shift when the Caliber went into retail production in January. In March, DaimlerChrysler reestablished a second shift and boosted the payroll to 2,650. A third shift with 1,000 more workers kicks off Sunday night at 11 p.m., about a week earlier than expected. When workers report, it will mark the first time in the plant’s 41-year history that it will be operating 24 hours a day.

Workers were talking about robot issues in May, when the company announced it would start the third shift. LaToya McClain, a seven-year DaimlerChrysler employee who lives in Rockford, said reaction in the plant over the third shift was mixed. She said workers were happy the Caliber was doing so well but concerned that first-shift workers were continually being sent home early because of problems with the body shop.

“How can we have a third shift when the robots aren’t staying together long enough for two shifts?” McClain asked in May.
Lesson learned?

Hill of Harbor Consulting said she hopes DaimlerChrysler officials are focusing on fixing the computer issues and not banking on the third shift to take care of the production issues.
“That’d be a very expensive fix,” she said.

Hill said DaimlerChrysler was too ambitious in its makeover of Belvidere.

“A new body shop, a new car, a new engine, sequencing parts for the first time,” Hill said. “Toyota wouldn’t operate this way. Toyota would put in the body shop and run it for a year, then they’d put in a new car and run it for a year, then they’d put in a new engine. They’d work out all of the problems before moving on to the next system.

“When working on future launches, Chrysler needs to take a long look at what’s happening in Belvidere,” she said.

All-Hybrid Rental Agency Sees Profits

AUTO RENTAL NEWS LOS ANGELES CA - - All-Hybrid Rental Agency Sees ProfitsJuly 12, 2006 As founder and chief executive of EV Rental Cars, a Los Angeles agency devoted solely to hybrid vehicles, Jeff Pink is one of the few U.S. business owners actually profiting from the current surge in oil prices, according to The Wall Street Journal. Daily rental rates range from $35 to $75 for the gasoline/electric hybrids in his fleet, including Toyota's Prius, Camry and Highlander, the Honda Civic and the Ford Escape. EV's cars can command at least a $10-a-day premium over most comparable all-gas rentals. Pink says EV turned a profit last year on revenue of $4 million and expects to take in $5 million to $6 million this year, The Wall Street Journal reports.

With 425 cars and eight rental locations on the West Coast, EV Rental is barely a blip on the radar screen compared with car-rental giants. But the company's stable of hybrids has thrust it into the industry spotlight.

Even Enterprise Rent-a-Car Co., one of the largest rental agencies, has only about 50 hybrids in its fleet of roughly 650,000 cars, and it can't expand that portion because the supply of hybrids is so tight. Because he’s making a profit and with an additional boost from government grants, Pink can pay retail prices for hybrids, something the big players can’t afford to do.

As EV transitioned its vehicle stock to hybrids, events conspired to give it a surge. California decided in 2005 to let hybrids with single drivers ride in High Occupancy Vehicle lanes, and fuel prices rose dramatically.

But when and if gas prices fall, consumer appetite for hybrids could wane. Or if the reverse happens and consumer demand for hybrids takes off, manufacturers might increase supply, allowing big rental agencies to potentially squeeze EV Rental out.

Pink says if he can build up enough inventory, and if the hybrid market takes off, EV Rental might make an attractive acquisition target. He expects to have 1,500 cars by the end of 2007 and 2,500 the next year.

Utah Highway Patrol to Replace Fleet With Dodge Chargers

SALT LAKE CITY, UT – Utah Highway Patrol (UHP) will add 350 Dodge Chargers to its police vehicle fleet over a three- to four-year period starting with 2006-models, according to KSL News Radio.

The Utah Highway Patrol picked the Dodge Charger because it has excellent “get up and go” for when troopers are chasing down speeders, with 340 horsepower. It also gets better gas mileage, and each Charger will have a digital camera installed in it, so video of high-speed chasing and arrests will be much more clear, according to KSL News Radio. Use of the digital cameras also allows for the video to be downloaded to a database once the trooper is in range of their building. The video can then be accessible on demand.
