DaimlerChrysler, Hino Issue Recalls

The Associated Press, TOKYO — DaimlerChrysler's Japan unit issued a recall for 3,668 Mercedes-Benz minivans over a gas hose defect, while Japan's Hino Motors plans to recall 21,427 light trucks for a front suspension defect, the companies said Tuesday.

DaimlerChrysler Japan Co. told Japan's Transport Ministry that is recalling 3,668 German-manufactured Mercedes-Benz Viano minivans imported since 2003 over the defect, automaker said in a statement

The defect involves a fuel hose connector that can be loosened by engine vibrations, possibly leading to fuel leaks, the company said. The defect could cause the engine to stop, it said. The company also issued a recall for 248 imported Chrysler Voyager and Grand Voyager minivans from the 2005 model year because of a windshield wiper motor defect that can cause the wiper arms to break, according to the Transport Ministry.

The recall was issued after the company received reports of the defect from unspecified overseas locations, the ministry said.

DaimlerChrysler plans to replace the defective parts on all of the minivans affected by Tuesday's recalls, it said.

Meanwhile, Hino Motors Ltd. told the Transport Ministry it is recalling 12,358 Dutro light trucks because of a front suspension defect, according to a statement from the company.

The recall also affects another 9,069 Toyota-branded Dyna and Toyoace light trucks, the ministry said. Hino produces the trucks for Toyota Motor Corp. on commission.

The defect can result in damage to the stabilizer link, leading the front suspension's stabilizer to drop in a worst-case scenario, Hino said.

The company said it will examine and replace as necessary the parts involved on all the trucks being recalled. It was not immediately clear if any of the trucks being recalled were sold overseas.

There have been no reports of accidents due to any of the defects reported Tuesday, according to the Transport Ministry.

uner Special: Brabus Boosts Mercedes-Benz GL

EDMUNDS INSIDE NEWS, OTTROP, Germany — Brabus, the longtime Mercedes-Benz tuning specialist, is offering performance-enhancing packages for the new GL320 CDI and GL500.
The 5.5-liter gasoline V8 is available in various stages of tune, starting with Brabus' B8 kit that boosts output to 419 horsepower. With the ultimate package, Brabus enlarges the displacement to 6.1 liters, hiking output to 462 hp and torque to 454 pound-feet. With the latter engine, the GL gallops from zero to 60 mph in less than 6.0 seconds and reaches a top speed of 158 mph.

The diesel V6 can be massaged to deliver 272 hp and 435 lb-ft of torque. Acceleration from zero to 60 mph is trimmed to less than 8.9 seconds, and top speed climbs to 135 mph.

Brabus offers a full range of go-fast pieces for the GL-Class, including a stainless-steel sport exhaust, high-performance brakes and a control module that lowers the ride height of the Airmatic air suspension. Z-rated Pirelli and Yokohama tires can be matched with Brabus alloy wheels in sizes ranging from 18 to 22 inches.

Aero body kits include a front fascia with air inlets and foglamp inserts, rocker panels with integrated entrance lights, a rear fascia with integrated diffuser and cutouts for the sport exhaust system, plus a spoiler for the rear liftgate.

Interior enhancements include full leather trim, sport steering wheel, custom consoles, and stainless-steel door sills with an illuminated Brabus logo.

The Fate Of An Icon - PT CRUISER

Jerry Flint, DETROIT NEWS - - Detroit has a terrible reputation for turning victory into disaster. Think Ford's Taurus or General Motors' entire Oldsmobile division. Today, the question is whether Chrysler will do the same thing to its PT Cruiser.

The PT Cruiser was one of Chrysler's triumphs before Daimler took over the company to form DaimlerChrysler (nyse: DCX - news - people ). PT sales currently total more than 800,000 units, and the 1 million mark is possible by the end of next year.

You are almost certainly aware of the PT (which I believe stands for Personal Transportation) because of its unique look. Until the Chevrolet HHR came on the market last July, the PT was all alone with its retro truck styling.

Year Sales
2000 91,996
2001 144,717
2002 138,260
2003 107,759
2004 115,955
2005 133,740
2006* 79,887

* 7 months

Source: Automotive News

The PT is available in two body styles. The four-door small wagon grabs 90% of PT sales, but 10% now go to the convertible, which Chrysler introduced early in 2004. Through July of this year, with sales of 79,887 against 78,625 units through the same seven-month period in 2005, the PT is the only Chrysler product with volume ahead of last year (excluding the Mercedes-built Dodge Sprinter van and new vehicles that Chrysler did not have on sale in the first part of last year). The PT is one of only four Chrysler/Dodge vehicles that are on Consumer Reports' recommended list.

So how can Chrysler screw it up? At last report, the company is trying to decide whether to add a V-6 in the next re-do. The current PT is a four-cylinder. Adding a V-6 would make it bigger and heavier, more expensive and thirstier for gasoline. That does not seem like the right thing to do today.

Such a move would be bad enough, but here's worse news (and I am quoting Automotive News, which usually gets its facts straight): "Another issue is styling. Retro and cutesy are out of fashion. Expect the next-generation PT Cruiser to be more of a straight-up Toyota RAV4 fighter with the retro elements played down."

The word is that Chrysler may even be thinking about changing the name on the new model, which is due in three or four years.

If all this is true, we are talking about wrecking the most original and successful vehicle seen in Detroit in years. It is no secret that designers hate retro. They think that borrowing from the past is an insult to their sensitive talents. Cute is also a problem, because when companies get successful, they believe they are too serious and too important to have cars that look "cute."

The best example of this was Chrysler's own Neon small car. The first model was a huge success--cute as a bug, too. When they redid it, the Chrysler team spent more time designing out the cuteness than correcting the engineering flaws. The redone Neon never came close to the sales of the first-generation model. Now they are thinking about murdering the PT the same way.

What distinguishes the PT from all the other small wagons-- Mazda Motor's (other-otc: MZDAF - news - people ) Mazda5, Honda's (nyse: HMC - news - people ) CRV, GM's (nyse: GM - news - people ) Pontiac Vibe, Toyota Motor's (nyse: TM - news - people ) Matrix or the Ford Focus--is that look. Take it away, and the PT Cruiser is just another small wagon. The truth is, Toyota and Honda still build them better than Chrysler. Eliminate the great look, and the PT--or whatever Chrysler will call it--becomes a second-rater.

What should Chrysler do with the PT?

Improve the economy and performance. Forget about a V-6. Do not make it bigger and heavier; make it lighter and stingier on fuel. Give the PT a level of engineering and fit and finish on par with the Japanese. This is a key vehicle in Chrysler's lineup, and Chrysler already has plenty of bigger, thirstier models.

I have another suggestion: Broaden the lineup. What about a small PT panel truck? The wagon body style is easily adaptable to a small truck. Or how about a flashy two-door? Chrysler's designers actually made prototypes of both models years ago (see images), but they never built them. Today's Chrysler has a knack for manufacturing multiple vehicles off the same platform, so why not use that talent on the next-generation PT?

When the idea for the original PT was forming at Chrysler (before the German takeover), Robert Lutz was Chrysler's president, and Tom Gale was the design chief. They were both terrific auto men, but they disagreed on the PT concept.

"Lutz wants to build a '27 Plymouth," Gale griped to me.

"Every time I see a new drawing, it looks more like a VW Golf," Lutz said.

The two fought hard, but when they finally arrived at the design that became the PT, they both knew that they had a winner.

Today's PT is indeed a winner. Chrysler should refine it, not turn it into another copycat small wagon.

What is it? 2007 Jeep Patriot

EDMUNDS INSIDE AUTO NEWS - - What's special about it? What do water balloons, Eva Mendes and Jeep have in common? Until this year's New York auto show, absolutely nothing. Then Jeep trotted out the actress during its press conference to "christen" the new Jeep Patriot with water balloons. It was as lame as it sounds, but you can't blame Jeep for trying to drum up a little drama for its new compact SUV. The Patriot isn't exactly going to be an easy sell.

You see, unlike every other Jeep before it, the Patriot isn't a hard-core off-road machine. In fact, it shares most of its major hardware with the Dodge Caliber hatchback. Base Patriots are front-wheel drive, have no low-range gearing and are otherwise built for the street. All-wheel drive, dubbed Freedom Drive I, is optional, but it works like most compact SUVs by engaging the rear wheels when the front tires slip.

Like the Caliber, the Patriot uses a 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine rated to produce 172 horsepower and 165 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission comes standard or you can opt for a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) that Jeeps says gets 6-8-percent better mileage than a traditional four-speed automatic.

In order to shore up its credentials as a true Jeep, the Patriot is also offered with the Freedom Drive II Off-Road Package. This is for Patriot buyers who actually want to do some serious off-roading. It includes the standard all-wheel-drive system but adds a continuously variable transaxle that gives the Patriot on-demand low-range gearing. The package also adds Hill Descent Control, off-road antilock brakes, 17-inch wheels and tires, skid plates and tow hooks. Patriots with the off-road package also sit 1 inch higher than the standard models.

Since Jeep knows most buyers will spend most of their time sitting in traffic, the interior of the Patriot was loaded with practical features. It has standard side airbags, a 60/40-split rear bench seat that folds flat and a vinyl floor in the cargo area that can be washed out with a hose. There's an auxiliary input jack for the standard CD stereo as well as an optional Boston Acoustics audio system. Additional options include a 115-volt AC outlet, a fold-flat front-passenger seat and a navigation system.

On the outside the Patriot is about the size of a Ford Escape, but on the inside it offers more head- and legroom than the Ford. Cargo room is a little tight, however, as the Patriot maxes out at 54.2 cubic feet with the rear seats folded, considerably less than most compact SUVs.

One area where the Patriot won't get beat by the competition is price. Although Jeep officials didn't announce specific numbers, they did say it would start below the Jeep Compass which has an official base price of $15,985. So it may not be as capable as most Jeeps, but at least the Patriot will be dirt cheap.

What's Edmunds' take?
Although most people who buy Jeeps never go off-road, it's the idea that they could that counts. The Patriot may appeal to some on price, but it's going to be tough for Jeep to convince the faithful that it's trail-worthy. — Ed Hellwig

Carmakers must reveal black boxes

Safety officials decide against mandating that automakers install event data recorders, though.

David Shepardson / Detroit News Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON -- After more than a decade of study, federal safety regulators outlined minimum requirements for "black boxes" in vehicles Monday, but stopped short of mandating them.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a new rule that says the devices, officially known as "event data recorders," must be made more durable and that all automakers must collect the same type of data from them.

The rule, which takes effect in September 2010, also requires automakers to tell consumers if their vehicles are equipped with a black box by including the notification in owners' manuals.

The devices collect a variety of data in the moments before, during and after a crash, such as speed and acceleration, whether the driver was wearing a seat belt and whether the driver hit the accelerator or the brake.

In a statement, NHTSA said the rule will support its efforts to craft new safety regulations "based on accurate crash information that NHTSA collects from vehicle owners" who share data from the black boxes.

NHTSA may reconsider its decision not to mandate the devices if automakers don't continue to increase the number of models that have them.

"We want to be especially careful not to adopt requirements that would result in unnecessary costs (for the automakers,)" NHTSA said.

NHTSA said 64 percent of all 2005 vehicles had event data recorders, but that number has risen significantly.

Toyota Motor Corp. now installs the devices in all of its vehicles, while General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. equip nearly all their models

Just over half of DaimlerChrysler AG Chrysler Group models have the technology, said spokeswoman Shawn Morgan.

"We're supportive of the technology as it leads to better highway safety," she said.

The requirement to notify owners about whether the devices are in vehicles is essentially already in place, since California in 2004 became the first state to require automakers to disclose to customers whether their vehicles have event data recorders.

California is the largest auto market in the United States, accounting for about 10 percent of all U.S. vehicle sales. That law also prohibits downloading data from the recorder without a court order or the owner's permission.

GM notes that the devices are unlike airplane black boxes, in that they don't record voices. They typically record the short period before an air bag deploys and then the crash itself. Without a crash being severe enough to prompt an air bag deployment, no data is recorded.

"Event data recorders are a valuable source of real world performance data that we apply toward making our vehicles safer," said GM spokesman Greg Martin.

Ford spokesman Dan Jarvis said the company never accesses data without a customer's written permission or under a court order.

The devices were initially installed in vehicles to determine when to deploy air bags, using sensors in the vehicle.

NHTSA said the rule will enhance the value of automatic crash notification systems, including an enhanced 911 emergency response system under development, by making it easier for vehicles equipped with rapid crash notification features to provide information to emergency personnel.

In Europe, a similar system is expected to be mandated in all cars by 2009. Called "eCall," it is expected to reduce response time to serious accidents by 50 percent, save 2,500 lives annually and reduce the severity of injuries by 15 percent.

This year Colorado, Maine, New Hampshire and Virginia have adopted similar disclosure regulations to clarify when law enforcement may retrieve data. States are split on whether police need to obtain a warrant to get the data. Some privacy advocates have voiced concern about the data falling into the wrong hands or about "spying" on drivers.

In 2004, Progressive Insurance offered up to 25 percent discounts for drivers who agreed to take part in a pilot program to monitor how much, how fast and where they drive.

That used a device that the insurance carrier installed in customers' vehicles. Cars can also be tracked through EasyPass or other automatic toll booth payment systems. A Connecticut rental car agency used GPS devices to monitor customers' driving habits and fined them if they sped.

Mindful of the concern of some drivers, some states are considering banning the practice.

On July 1, a new law took effect in New Hampshire that prohibits state "surveillance" of vehicles "through the use of a camera or other imaging device or any other device, including but not limited to a transponder, cellular telephone, global positioning satellite, or radio frequency identification device."

Auto black boxes

  • What are they? Black boxes, officially known as "event data recorders" or EDRs, provide information from a vehicle in the seconds surrounding a crash, including vehicle speed.
  • Benefits : Automakers and safety groups say the information helps engineers design safer vehicles and learn more about what causes crashes.
  • Concerns : Privacy groups worry that the information could be accessed by anyone and lead to the violation of a driver's privacy, higher insurance premiums or additional traffic violations.
  • States : Ten states -- Arkansas, California, Colorado, Maine, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Texas and Virginia -- have laws dealing with the devices. The laws generally require manufacturers to disclose the presence of recorders in vehicles or clarify that the data is owned by vehicle owners and can only be accessed with their permission.
  • Automakers : The devices are found in virtually all new vehicles made by General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. Toyota Motor Corp. said the devices are found in all its 2006 model year vehicles, while about half of the new vehicles made by DaimlerChrysler AG have them.
  • How do I check for one? Consult your owner's manual. The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers says most manufacturers already disclose the event data recorders in owner's manuals. You can also get the vehicle identification number (VIN) of your car and contact the manufacturer to find out if the vehicle has the device.

Chrysler expansion may close Van Horn

Sean Dalton, The News-Herald, RENTON — A section of Van Horn Road could be closed permanently if a proposed V-6 engine plant is built in the city.

The City Council voted at a special meeting Monday to move forward with plans to close the road south of the Trenton Engine Plant, between Fort Street and West Jefferson Avenue.

The closure will be a key concession in ongoing negotiations with DaimlerChrysler to build a new engine plant in the city.

The proposed $800 million facility would produce a new V-6 engine codenamed "Phoenix."

A road closure request was sent to the Wayne County Commission on Wednesday after the meeting Monday, city officials said.

If county engineers have no objections, the commission will take the next step in permanently closing the road to residential traffic, said Ken Kucel, director of the Wayne County Department of Public Services.

"As long as no one protests in house the petition is sent out to the community and at least seven property owners in the community must sign the affidavit," Kucel said. "(The affidavit) must consist of names and addresses of each and every occupant adjacent to the street to be vacated."

The next step would be to notify utility companies, which have a two-week window to respond to the county's notice. If there are no internal objections at the commission level, the request would be approved, Kucel said.

Monday's meeting originally was called to discuss the sale of a small piece of park property to a private business owner.

The existing DaimlerChrysler plant, which opened in 1952, produces three engines — 3.3-liter, 3.8-liter and 4.0-liter. The facility will close in 2014, when the engine models it produces go out of production.

According to city officials, DaimlerChrysler sent the mayor's office a letter Friday saying that it would need Van Horn shut down indefinitely to make room for the new plant, which also would expand over nearby soccer fields and take up half of the existing parking lot. A total of 980,000 square feet was requested for the plant's construction.

The original requirement was 1.2 million square feet, which was scaled down to cooperate with and accommodate the city's situation, according to Mayor Gerald Brown.

"We're giving them a huge financial package to lure them here, in turn," he said. "DaimlerChrysler produces 25 percent of our city's revenues."

The letter simultaneously was sent to Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano's staff.

"(They said) if you really are serious about this plant being here for the future, the footprint of the plant has to go over Van Horn Road between the railroad tracks," City Administrator Robert Cady said. "I think any city would have to give it serious consideration."

DaimlerChrysler could come back with a decision next week, according to city officials.

That decision was supposed to come this week, but there was an administrative issue at DaimlerChrysler, city officials said.

Wayne County has been close to negotiations between the automaker and the city, Cady said.

Some city officials said two other sites considered for the new plant are outside the county.

But Brown has said that the sites are within the county "on the outskirts."

Those locations have been kept under wraps for the purpose of negotiations, he said.

Regardless of location, the facility must be operational for 2010 model year vehicles.

"There has to be a shovel in the ground no later than Nov. 1 of this year," Cady said.

Council members said it was a tough choice to make, considering the possible inconvenience to residents of neighboring Grosse Ile.

"I'm one of those guys who lives on Van Horn, so I'm going to have to go around too, but the economical advantages outweigh that," Councilman William LeFevre said.

The administration has been negotiating with DaimlerChrysler for three months, during which alternatives were sought to closing the road.

"This isn't the one that we're happiest with, but we tried all different kinds of configurations," Lefevre said. "... We came up with Van Horn having to be closed or we would not be up for consideration."

That stretch of Van Horn is the route widely used by area residents for public access to and from Grosse Ile via the Wayne County Bridge, which is at the south end of the island community. There also is a toll bridge about four miles away at the north end of the island.

Alternate routes suggested are to take Vreeland or West roads to and from West Jefferson for access to the free bridge. Vreeland Road is south of Van Horn and West Road is north of Van Horn.

Officials said the project is still fluid and there is more to it than just closing a road.

"Until they get a handle on the machinery and equipment going in there, it could go larger," Cady said. "There are 28 acres of triangular land at the north part of their property that they need to turn into a parking lot."

The city is trying to hold onto as many jobs as possible. The standing engine plant employs 1,500 workers; the new plant would employ about half of that.

"Not only is this a shot into the arm for the taxes, but this is 600 high-paying jobs," Cady said. "It's not flipping burgers at McDonald's. It's on us and the council to keep these jobs here."

The council fully supports negotiations between the city and DaimlerChrysler.

"We need the plant, not only for Trenton, but for the whole Downriver area," LeFevre said.

The competition for the project is fierce, according to Councilman Terrence Teifer.

"In Kenosha, Wis., where the other significant Chrysler engine plant is, they don't charge property taxes," Teifer said. "In Dundee, they used a community block grant of $100 million in benefits."

A facility similar to the one proposed for Trenton was built last year in Dundee. Construction of that plant was finished in October.

"That's what we're up against here," Teifer said. "The engine produced in Dundee replaced the engine that was produced at the (existing) Trenton engine plant."

Teifer said that how the city handles the road closure is still ongoing.

"I don't know if there's a way to route it, but as it stands, it is closed," Teifer said. "If it were partially opened, it would not be opened to public traffic, but would only be used by DTE and treatment plant employees."

DaimlerChrysler's intentions to build the new plant were made public April 30, when United Auto Workers' contract negotiations at the existing plant called for new job specifications down the road.

The new rules put workers into two team-based classes: technical specialist and production specialist.

The work rules and proposed plants are modeled after the Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance, or GEMA, facility in Dundee. That operation is a joint venture among DaimlerChrysler AG, Hyundai Motor Co. and Mitsubishi Motors Corp.

Mercedes-Benz Selling Diesels in U.S. Again

    By Bill Siuru, PhD, PE

Mercedes-Benz has long history of building diesel-powered cars. The 1936 Mercedes-Benz 260D was the world's first production diesel car. In the 1980s, a large number of Mercedes-Benz sold here were diesel powered. It stopped selling diesels in 1999, mostly because of ever more stringent emission requirements.

Recognizing American's demand for vehicles with good fuel economy without compromising utility, cargo capacity and performance, Mercedes-Benz has re-introduced several new diesel-powered vehicles. While diesel-powered passenger vehicles represented just 3 percent of the U.S. market in 2004, J.D. Power and Associates predicts they will comprise 11 percent of U.S. auto sales by 2012.

The E320 CDI, which has been offered for a couple of years, has been replaced by the E320 BLUETEC® luxury sedan. In addition, there is a new ML320 CDI SUV and R320 CDI Sports Tourer that also use BLUETEC technology. Unfortunately, these diesels will not be available in California, Maine, Maryland, New York, and Vermont because they do not pass the more stringent emission requirements in these five states.

And what is BLUETEC? There are two components to the BLUETEC - enhanced engines and an integrated emission-gas after-treatment system. The turbocharged V6 CDI engine?s combustion processes have been optimized as far as possible to reduce emissions. Then, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons emissions are reduced using oxidizing catalytic converters, that is Diesel Oxidation Catalysts. Particulate matter is handled by a particulate filter, either as a separate element or integrated with one of the other BLUETEC components.

According to DaimlerChrysler, the new-generation V-6 diesel engine with CDI fuel injection technology yields up to 20 to 40 percent better fuel economy than comparable gasoline engines. The E320 BLUETEC is the only diesel-powered luxury sedan available in the U.S. that can deliver an estimated 780 miles on a tank of fuel.

BLUETEC is an umbrella term covering different after-treatment technologies chosen for the operating characteristics of the particular application. It is modular so it can be used on trucks, buses, cars, SUVs and even hybrids. For example, in order to meet very strict Euro-5 requirements, nitrogen oxides are handled by a Selective Catalytic Reduction system with a urea-based injection system rather than the DeNOx catalytic converter used on U.S. cars.

The aqueous urea solution is called AdBlue, thus the source of the name, BLUETEC. When AdBlue, which is odorless, non-toxic and stored in an onboard tank, is injected into the pre-scrubbed exhaust, ammonia is released. This causes the NOx to be reduced to harmless nitrogen and water in the downstream SCR catalytic converter. Injection is controlled by the engine management system.

If the AdBlue system were used on U.S. cars, they could probably meet emission standards in all fifty states. For years, DaimlerChrysler has been lobbying the EPA, a key opponent to urea injection systems, to get them accepted in the U.S. The company says since an average of around one gallon of AdBlue is needed for about 2,300 miles of driving, the AdBlue tank can be refilled during scheduled maintenance, taking it out of the hands of the owners. In Europe, there are now around 1,500 public-access AdBlue refuelling sites, ranging from the Arctic Circle to southern Spain and from Ireland to Moscow with several producers supplying AdBlue.

DaimlerChrysler has also developed a BLUETEC Hybrid prototype that combines the 3-liter BLUETEC V6 diesel with a high-torque electric motor in a "mild hybrid." While the diesel engine switches off when not needed, such as at traffic lights, the vehicle cannot run on the electric motor alone. The BLUETEC technology will be shared with the Chrysler Group and thus a Jeep- based prototype with a BLUETEC diesel has been developed. Here the AdBlue injection system is used for more robust NOx reduction. Thus, the Jeep Grand Cherokee BLUETEC would be a 50-state vehicle, if it reaches production.

Thumbs Down for Jeep Gadiator for Production

Jeep Gladiator debuted at 2005 Detroit auto show. “It wasn’t profitable,
” COO Eric Ridenour tells Ward’s.

WardsAuto.com, RUBICON SPRINGS, CA – Chrysler Group’s Jeep brand will not be returning to the compact pickup arena anytime soon, the auto maker’s chief operating officer says.

Chrysler executives had been contemplating a production version of the Jeep Gladiator concept that debuted at the 2005 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The decision belies an unprecedented lineup expansion that will see Jeep’s showroom grow, by year’s end, to eight models from three.

However, while the Gladiator’s death threatens to disappoint dealers, brand enthusiasts and SUV aficionados in general, it may impress Wall Street as a sign of Chrysler’s shrewdness.

Chrysler has adopted a renewed focus on bottom-line performance as it fights to maintain momentum that has produced U.S. market share gains while cross-town rivals General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. have seen their shares erode.

This discipline was demonstrated most recently by the caution exhibited in the face of overwhelming positive reaction to the Dodge Challenger concept car unveiled at this year’s Detroit auto show.

Despite the strong favorable consumer response, the final go-ahead was issued only after President and CEO Tom LaSorda ordered that the business case be based on the high-margin scenario of a limited production run and scaled-down volumes.

The Gladiator concept, which features bold styling that influenced the redesigned ’07 Jeep Wrangler, is based on a unique platform. But Ridenour told Ward’s previously that a production truck, if approved, would have been a niche vehicle based on an existing midsize body-on-frame architecture.

Meanwhile, Ridenour dismisses the notion Chrysler is squandering an opportunity to re-energize a segment where the top-selling product – the Ford Ranger – is also the segment’s oldest product. “We have Dakota,” he says.

Though redesigned for ’05, sales of the Dodge Dakota are down 30.6% through July, reflecting a first-half segment-wide slide of 10.3%, according to Ward’s data.

Gladiator production would have marked the end of a prolonged pickup market hiatus for Jeep. It stopped building the Comanche in 1992 after a 6-year run.

The decision to shelve the product also marks the second time in two years Chrysler has passed on a Jeep pickup. The Scrambler concept, which debuted at the 2002 Specialty Equipment Market Assn. (SEMA) show in Las Vegas, briefly was considered for production before the auto maker nixed the idea.

Jeep has a history of pickup production that dates back seven decades and includes nameplates such as the Honcho and Jeepster.

There even was a previous Gladiator, which ran from 1963 to 1970.

But Ridenour is loath to admit the latest Gladiator is dead and buried. Though short-term production plans have been killed, he adds: “You can never say anything long-term in this business.”

Chrysler Considers More Cuts in Production

The Dodge Durango SUV tops the Chrysler group's days-supply list at 204 days as of Aug. 1. (2007 model shown)

    BRADFORD WERNLE | AUTOMOTIVE NEWS AutoWeek | Published 08/21/06, 8:21 am et - -
Chrysler may cut production of some 2007 vehicles if previously announced cutbacks don't make a sufficient dent in the company's bloated inventories.

In a July sales call to analysts, Chrysler CEO Tom LaSorda said the company was taking a series of actions to trim production by 50,000 to 65,000 units. Now COO Eric Ridenour says Chrysler could cut production further, primarily 2007 models.

Ridenour said Chrysler is sticking with the plan announced by LaSorda but will monitor the success of its sales programs closely.

"We have cuts coming throughout the third quarter," Ridenour said at the introduction of the redesigned 2007 Jeep Wrangler here. "Clearly our intent is to help correct the inventory. We have a pretty aggressive plan."

Ridenour said he thinks the actions Chrysler has taken are sufficient. If not, the company will make further cuts, he said.

"I'm not expecting there to be further cutbacks, but it depends on how good sales are," Ridenour said.

In July, Chrysler trimmed inventory with plant shutdowns.

As of Aug. 1, dealers were holding 560,200 vehicles, the highest July inventories in five years. That translated to a 93-day supply. Of the vehicles in inventory, 436,400 were trucks.

The Dodge Durango SUV tops the Chrysler group's days-supply list. Dealers had a 204-day supply as of Aug. 1, with 27,300 units of inventory.

Supplies of the Jeep Commander (127 days), Dodge Magnum (147 days) and Dodge Dakota (113 days) also were high.

Catherine Madden, production forecaster for Global Insight in Lexington, Mass., predicts Chrysler group production will decline 2.8 percent in the second half of 2006 compared with the first half.

"The pace of assembly in the first half of the year is unsustainable without ballooning inventories further," she says. "They need to move it (the inventories). They're launching several significant products over the next couple of months. Unfortunately, they are still under the gun of heavier incentives."

Toledo plant’s woes add to Chrysler’s

BELVIDERE — The launch of the redesigned Jeep Wrangler and all-new Dodge Nitro is behind schedule because of defects and quality issues at the Toledo, Ohio, Jeep Assembly complex, according to the Toledo Blade.

Workers are putting together more than 200 Wranglers a day at the $900 million, multiplant complex, but none have been shipped to dealers because of defects, according to local United Auto Workers officials.

DaimlerChrysler workers at one of the Toledo plants are building 50 Dodge Nitros and 750 Jeep Libertys a day on two shifts. Original plans called for workers to begin producing 60 percent Nitros and 40 percent Libertys on three shifts this week, but that was moved back to next week. The Toledo troubles come on the heels of robot problems at its assembly plant in Belvidere, where workers assemble the Dodge Caliber and Jeep Compass, and eventually, the Jeep Patriot.

Frequent shutdowns in the Belvidere plant’s automated body shop have put workers thousands behind on Caliber and Compass orders. The Caliber got off to a strong sales start, seeing sales grow to 12,422 by May, the car’s fourth month on dealer floors. But Caliber sales dropped in June and then precipitously in July not because of a lack of popularity but because not enough of the combination sporty coupe/SUVs are coming out of the plant.

The Belvidere and Toledo plants will produce half of the 10 vehicles Chrysler is rolling out this year, and the company invested more than $1.3 billion in the two operations.

DaimlerChrysler officials will release August sales figures on Sept. 1.

BEHIND THE WHEEL: Fuel saving is about the past [Chrysler 300 gets 37MPG on Diesel]

MARK PHELAN, FREE PRESS COLUMNIST - -I tested the past, present and future of alternative-fuel and high efficiency performance as I cruised Woodward Avenue this week.

The past won, but the future is coming fast.

For four days, I drove a Chrysler 300 large sedan powered by a diesel engine, a gasoline-electric hybrid Saturn Vue compact SUV and a hydrogen-powered Ford Focus FCV fuel-cell compact sedan around metro Detroit, including hours in stop-and-go pre-Dream Cruise traffic.

The good news is that all three improve fuel efficiency.

The bad news is that you can only buy one of them.

The Vue hybrid is the present. It goes on sale next month for $22,370. That's a pretty reasonable price for a hybrid SUV. My fuel economy in the Vue was a respectable but unexciting 24.7 m.p.g. At a rough guess, that's six or seven m.p.g. better than I would have experienced in a comparable gasoline-powered Vue.

Other hybrids like the Toyota Prius and Ford Escape, both of which were developed for slow city driving, probably would have gotten better mileage. The Vue does have its price and a roomy interior in its favor, however.

The Focus FCV is the future. Its fuel cell runs on hydrogen and emits only water.

Unfortunately, the Focus I drove cost somewhere north of $1 million, and you'd have to tow a dirigible behind it to have hydrogen to refuel.

The diesel Chrysler 300 -- sold in Europe, but not here due to different emissions regulations -- turned in an astounding 37.7 m.p.g. in my test. That's nearly triple the mileage I'd expect with my driving style in a Hemi V8 Chrysler 300 under the same stop-and-go conditions.

Diesel engines -- patented by Rudolf Diesel in 1892 -- cost more than gasoline engines, and new emissions regulations will increase that cost. The car I tested would probably sticker at over $30,000. But the 300 is a roomy large car, and the diesel provided excellent performance as well as money-saving fuel economy.

    The past wins. For now.

Dr. Z so far fails to engineer Mercedes revival, stock surge

HE LECKEY FILE, ANDREW LECKEY, Tribune Media Services columnist

The cat is out of the bag.

DaimlerChrysler AG, the world's third-largest vehicle-maker formed in the merger of Daimler-Benz AG and Chrysler Corp., was introduced as a "merger of equals" in 1998. Yeah, right.

Top executives of the merged companies spoke proudly of the potential of the new partnership and how each side would benefit. Nobody believed them. Chrysler was in a tailspin and Daimler-Benz, the buyer, would run the company.

Cut to 2006. Mustachioed DaimlerChrysler Chairman Dieter Zetsche is all over the airwaves and Internet as the firm's deadpan spokesman. He speaks in a thick German accent of the role German engineering plays in Chrysler vehicles.

Yes, DaimlerChrysler is German and proud of it. If you didn't know better, you'd think you were watching Volkswagen Jetta commercials, which feature an actor playing a wacky engineer with a thick German accent.

DaimlerChrysler's "Dr. Z" is as German as sauerkraut. Former Chrysler Chairman Lee Iacocca was a pitchman for Chrysler who also achieved wide recognition, though not as a funnyman.

Credited with Chrysler's revival, Zetsche was named chairman of DaimlerChrysler about a year ago. In the same way that he cut costs, introduced new products and rejuvenated the Chrysler brand, Zetsche has been trying to turn embattled Mercedes around by improving quality and reworking its product lineup.

No lasting turnaround in its brands will be easy, however.

In the J.D. Power and Associates' 2006 rankings of car dependability, DaimlerChrysler vehicles did not fare well: Chrysler ranked 13th (232 problems reported per 100 vehicles), Mercedes-Benz ranked 17th (240 problems), Dodge 23rd (258 problems) and Jeep 25th (264 problems).

Lexus topped all comers with only 136 problems per 100 vehicles.

No word on whether we're about to be inundated by commercials from wacky Japanese CEOs, but Japan has generally emphasized the U.S. jobs it provides and downplayed its national origins.

At DaimlerChrysler, there's still the problem of sales. In July, DaimlerChrysler sales in the U.S. were down 35 percent from a year earlier.

DaimlerChrysler AG (DCX) stock is flat this year after last year's 21 percent gain. Its balance sheet is stronger than those of its U.S. rivals. Wall Street analysts currently rank DaimlerChrysler shares a "buy," according to Thomson Financial. That consists of three "strong buys," two "holds" and one "underperform."

But the company has its work cut out for it. Even though it often evokes its U.S. hot-rod roots, this is now clearly a German company whose future will be determined on a worldwide stage.

Court: Some Daimler Holders Owed Money

Associated Press, BERLIN GERMANY - - A German court has ruled that automaker DaimlerChrysler AG must make payments to some former shareholders of Daimler-Benz AG to settle a case stemming from its 1998 merger with Chrysler Corp., a court spokesman said Monday.

The Stuttgart state court decided the automaker must pay the 17 plaintiffs 22.15 euros ($28.42) per share to settle a dispute over the valuation of their stock, spokesman Till Jakob said.

There was no immediate information on the total value of the payout.

During the 1998 merger, 1.8 percent of Daimler-Benz shares were exchanged involuntarily for shares in the merged company.

Some shareholders claimed the exchange ratio used inaccurately valued their shares, and they launched court proceedings in 1999.

DaimlerChrysler said in its annual report earlier this year that it "continues to view the exchange ratio set at the time by the company as appropriate" and intended to "continue defending ourselves vigorously against these claims."

The merger led to several legal cases for DaimlerChrysler - most prominently, a legal battle with billionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian, who sought more than $1 billion.

He claimed that Daimler-Benz engineered a takeover of U.S. automaker Chrysler, then cheated him out of an acquisition premium by claiming it was a merger of equals. A Delaware court rejected his suit last year.

In 2003, the company agreed to pay $300 million to settle a $22 billion class-action lawsuit filed by other investors who claimed they were misled. DaimlerChrysler denied the charge but said it settled the case because of the risk a jury might reach a different conclusion.

DaimlerChrysler shares fell 0.5 percent to 41.19 euros ($52.84) in Frankfurt trading.
