New Jeep Patriot cuts a wide driving swath

MALCOLM GUNN / Wheelbase Communications

Do you remember the Cherokee?

Jeep certainly hopes you do, and in a fond way. It's a big reason why this DaimlerChrysler division has added the Patriot to its ever-expanding range of sport-utility vehicles.

It's similar-looking to the Cherokee, intentionally so, but cuts a wider swath, from easy-going boulevard cruiser to rugged, range-rumbling off-roader. It joins the entry-level Compass and completely madeover Wrangler as Jeep's new-for-2007 entries. The Patriot/Compass duo is heavily based on the Dodge Caliber wagon and shares many of the same mechanical components.

For the Patriot, however, it's all about emulating the Cherokee, a squarish model that was created four years before Jeep was acquired from the American Motors in 1987. The Cherokee left in 2001, but legions of devoted fans still long for the old warhorse and its straightforward and boxy styling as well as its on- and off-trail capabilities.

The Patriot is zoned in on recapturing at least some of the Cherokee's past glory in a fairly faithful and low-cost ($16,000 base price) way by using an existing platform.

Compared to the Jeep Compass, which happens to be the first Jeep not intended for off-road duty, the Patriot, or at least one of its models, is "Trail Rated," referring to California's Rubicon Trail, an off-road torture-test route strung through the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Make it here and the Trail Rated stamp is yours.

The base two-wheel-drive Patriot, as well as models fitted with the basic Freedom Drive I four-wheel-drive system, don't qualify for Trail Rated status. For that you'll have to opt for the optional Freedom Drive II setup that includes a low-range 19:1 crawl axle ratio plus 17-inch wheels shod with all-terrain rubber that provides an extra inch of ground clearance. They're all necessary ingredients for tackling the backwoods and safely returning to civilization after the fun is over.

To keep the price low and to help deliver better fuel economy than the old Cherokee (exactly what Jeep needs in a climate of gas-price uncertainty) Jeep kept the Caliber's 172-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder. With 165 lb.-ft. of torque, it's not exactly muscle-bound, but it should provide enough grunt to conquer most trails.

Transmission choices consist of a five-speed manual or optional continuously variable unit that was chosen for its 6 to 8 percent increase in fuel efficiency when compared with a traditional four-speed automatic.

Two versions of the Patriot, labeled Sport and Limited, are available and both can be had in two- or four-wheel drive. Standard Sport equipment includes side-curtain air bags, stability and traction control, anti-lock brakes, a slide-out load floor that can handle 250 pounds and manual windows and door looks.

Step up to the Limited and air conditioning, remote keyless entry, cruise control, power windows/locks/mirrors and tire-pressure monitoring are added to the feature list. Many of the Limited's standard features are also available on base models. However, notable Limited options include leather seats, sunroof, heated cloth (or leather) seats, satellite-based navigation system with voice activation, a handy removable flashlight built into the headliner and a premium nine-speaker, 458-watt sound system. The hinged twin-speaker rear unit on this boombox drops down from the raised liftgate for broadcasting music to anyone gathered outside the vehicle.

The Patriot will be an instant hit with buyers who treasure traditional Jeep values as projected through traditional Jeep shapes. Should that bit of nostalgia ever wear off, there's still a lot to love, from practicality to economy of operation to off-road capability, provided that option is selected.

Dealers lacking Ram repair parts

Dodge retailers need them to fix problem with seat belts
KATIE MERX |FREE PRESS BUSINESS WRITER - - Dodge dealers said one reason they can't move full-size pickups off their lots is that they haven't been able to get replacement parts for some recalled 2006 Dodge Ram 1500s, despite a report that Chrysler Group said it would ship parts overnight.

Chrysler said Wednesday it would rush parts to dealers who had sales pending. But dealers in Michigan and Illinois and on the East Coast told the Free Press on Thursday that they have had buyers for some of the trucks for up to two weeks and still don't have replacement parts.

More than 140,000 2006 Dodge Ram 1500s are under recall because of front and passenger-side air bags and seat belts that might not function properly with child safety seats.

Chrysler notified dealers about the recall Sept. 6. The automaker plans to tell vehicle owners in October, when it has enough replacement parts stocked up to do repairs. Dealers said they've received air bag replacement parts but are waiting for seatbelt parts.

In the meantime, dealers say they are losing customers who signed on the bottom line. And the longer the late-model vehicles sit on the lots the harder it will be to sell them; sales of large vehicles dropped off significantly this year. Chrysler is offering a total incentive package of $6,276 on the '06 Dodge Ram 1500, Edmunds.com reports.

The problem for dealers is that, even if they draw in a customer, legally they can't sell the truck until the problem is fixed. Because it was a child-safety matter, Chrysler issued the recall before it had enough parts on hand to repair in-stock vehicles, company spokesman Max Gates said.

"We know there's some frustration," Gates said. "We're redirecting some of the parts that we were sending to plants, to our dealers."

Factories that produce Chrysler's large trucks are shut down temporarily while the automaker tries to sell off the inventory.

Chrysler hedges its bets

Erin Riches | Edmunds Inside Line - -

If you asked us to name the one thing that made the Chrysler 300 an overnight success, we wouldn't point you to its rear-wheel drive, its retro styling or its Mercedes-Benz mechanicals. No, it's the fact that Chrysler took a risk: The company bet real money that real people would spend their real money to buy this stylish, agile and unconventional sedan, and it paid off.

But Chrysler decided not to gamble on the redesign of the midsize Sebring sedan. Instead, the 2007 Chrysler Sebring, which goes on sale in early November, represents a safe move, a defensive play borne of the same kind of carefully measured thinking that puts hundreds of thousands of people in Honda Accords and Toyota Camrys every year.

Compact roots
Still front-wheel drive, the 2007 Chrysler Sebring rides on a stretched and widened version of the Dodge Caliber platform, which is also the basis for the next Sebring convertible. Overall length remains the same as last year's Sebring, but the car is now taller, and rides on a wider track and slightly longer wheelbase.

This opens up considerably more headroom and legroom, now on par with most competitors in this class, and backseat passengers can easily slide their feet under the front chairs. We're told DaimlerChrysler chairman Dieter Zetsche was adamant about increasing headroom in the new Sebring — likely because he banged his melon getting into the old car, which had as much cranial clearance as a Little Tikes pedal car.

Still, the '07 Sebring remains narrow for a midsize sedan, resulting in about an inch less hip- and shoulder room front and rear than any of its rivals. Trunk volume measures just 13.6 cubic feet, a low number for this segment.

Better dressed
Sparsely equipped and hastily furnished, previous-generation Sebrings felt like rental cars on the inside. Chrysler addressed both issues during the redesign, although materials quality still won't threaten the import-brand leaders.

Chrysler will sell the new Sebring in base, Touring and Limited trim levels. If you go for a base Sebring, you won't do without anything important, as all models come with ABS, a tire-pressure monitor, 16-inch steel wheels, front-seat side airbags, full-length head curtain airbags, air-conditioning, a CD player, an input jack for MP3 players and cruise control. Finding a comfortable driving position isn't hard either, now that there's a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel.

Touring models get 17-inch alloy wheels, upgraded interior trim and lighting, and a lengthier options list, while the Limited adds single-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, Boston Acoustics speakers and, in a nod to the 300C, tortoise-shell interior accents.

An extensive options list includes everything from predictable extras like stability control, satellite radio and remote start to more unusual stuff like front cupholders that can warm your latte or chill your cola, and a Harman Kardon-designed, hard drive-based navigation and audio system with real-time traffic rerouting and 20GB of MP3 file storage.

Slow start
No matter which trim level you select, a 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder engine is standard. Also used in the Caliber and Jeep Compass, the engine makes 173 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 166 pound-feet of torque at 4400 rpm. It comes only with a four-speed automatic transmission. Thusly equipped, the Sebring earns a 24 mpg city, 32 mpg EPA rating.

Unfortunately, the mileage isn't good enough to justify the 2.4-liter's lethargic response and coarse power delivery. It's no match for the standard four-cylinder engines in the Camry, Accord or Nissan Altima. Plus, the Camry and Accord have more sophisticated five-speed automatics (in addition to offering manual gearboxes), while the Altima has a continuously variable transmission.

A better choice for most buyers is the carryover 2.7-liter, twin-cam V6 optional on the Sebring Touring. Its 189-hp rating may look feeble next to last year's even 200, but engineers retuned it to provide more torque at lower rpm — 191 lb-ft at 4000 rpm compared to 190 lb-ft at 4850 rpm on the '06 Sebring.

Although you're still forced to get friendly with a four-speed automatic, the small V6 is infinitely more livable in everyday traffic situations. It's not as smooth as we'd like, but its 22/30 mileage rating is respectable.

The 3.5-liter SOHC V6, available only on the Sebring Limited, is far and away the best engine in the lineup. Rated for 235 hp at 6400 rpm and 232 lb-ft of torque, this V6 is light on off-the-line pull but plenty satisfying once it revs up. It also earns you the right to have a six-speed automatic, which likely accounts for the Limited's 19/28 fuel economy estimate with this engine option. Upshifts happen at redline under full throttle, but downshifts take a little longer than they should whether you're in "D" or the autostick manual mode.

Chrysler claims a 7.7-second 0-60-mph time with the 3.5-liter — slower than a V6-equipped Camry, but right on target with the V6 Accord, Ford Fusion and Chevrolet Malibu SS.

Fine ride, average handling
Ride quality is vastly improved, thanks to the Sebring's stiffer structure and a new front strut/rear multilink suspension with increased travel. Commuters will find it acceptably smooth for this class, and the sedan feels stable at high speeds.

In corners, the '07 Sebring doesn't feel quite so solid, as soft suspension tuning and minimal feedback from the power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering curb its entertainment potential. Limited models equipped with the 3.5-liter V6 feel crisper and more energetic, thanks to firmer springs and shocks and lower-profile 18-inch tires. If we had it our way, this would be the standard setup on all Sebrings.

More problematic is the Chrysler's lack of serious braking hardware. If you get the four-cylinder engine, you're stuck with rear drum brakes, and on mountain roads, they cook faster than the trick new cupholders. Sebring V6 models upgrade to four-wheel discs, which perform better but lack pedal progression.

Risk-free
Radical it isn't, but the '07 Sebring does meet the minimum requirements for a midsize family sedan. It starts at a comfortable $19,000, tops out just over $30 grand and can deliver 30 mpg on the highway.

But look past the numbers and the fancy electronics (as cool as it is to rip CDs from the driver seat), and the 2007 Chrysler Sebring is an ordinary car with middling performance credentials. It's too safe a bet from a car company that's better off taking risks.

Edmunds attended a manufacturer-sponsored event, to which selected members of the press were invited, to facilitate this report.

EPA Tightens Emissions Rules; Local Impact is Unclear

ROB DAVIS Voice Staff Writer | DETROIT- - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency revised its national air-quality standards Thursday, a decision that was decried by the energy industry as too strict and health advocates and environmentalists as too lax.

It is unclear what effect the stricter regulations will have in San Diego County, as some confusion exists between local and federal officials. The EPA says San Diego County would have to develop a plan to comply with the new limit. But the San Diego County Air Pollution Control District says the federal government used old data to draw that conclusion, and that the county will not likely be affected.

Particle pollution from power plants and cars was targeted yesterday by stricter EPA emissions limits. File Photo.

The EPA's decision Thursday reduced the acceptable daily exposure to fine particulate matter found in the air from sooty sources such as wildfire smoke and car and power plant emissions. The new limit nearly halves the number of particles it is acceptable to inhale in a day.

The fine particles, which are about one-thirtieth the width of a human hair, can penetrate deep into the lungs and have increasingly been linked to aggravated asthma and respiratory and cardiovascular disease. Particle pollution is the main culprit behind the smoggy views in the country's national and state parks.

EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson hailed the decision in a conference call with reporters. "The bottom line is that our air standards are more protective today than they were yesterday," he said.

But groups such as the American Lung Association, the American Medical Association and the National Environmental Trust harshly criticized the reduction for not going far enough and ignoring the advice of the EPA's own science advisors. Johnson said the government acted on standards wherever the underlying science afforded a clear consensus.

The EPA said the tighter standards will require 32 counties across the country -- including San Diego -- to develop new pollution-control measures by 2015. (An extension until 2020 is possible.) Those could involve retrofitting diesel engines and other sources of man-made emissions.

But Rob Reider, a spokesman for the San Diego County Air Pollution Control District, which monitors and controls local emissions, said he believes the EPA made a mistake in its projections by including San Diego County.

Reider said he does not believe the new standards will affect San Diego, where airborne particulate matter has steadily decreased since monitoring began in 1999.

With the exception of one downtown San Diego air monitoring station, the region's air monitors already show compliance with the new rule, Reider said. The EPA likely used old data to develop that 32-county list, he said. An EPA spokesman could not be reached for comment.

"We don't think there's going to be any regulatory impact on San Diego County," Reider said. "... We've been experiencing an air quality improvement standard over the last few years and we expect that to continue."

By the time the EPA implements the new limits in 2009, Reider said, he is "optimistic" all of San Diego's air will be fully compliant.

That doesn't mean the county is guaranteed to escape regulatory trouble. Weather, moisture and wind patterns -- things that can't be controlled by regulations -- all play a role, Reider said. And he said the pollution control district will continue monitoring the effects of pollution from the 63,000 Mexican cars and trucks that cross daily into San Diego.

But Jan Cortez, vice president of research and environmental health at the American Lung Association of California's San Diego and Imperial County office, questioned whether the region will be able to dodge the stricter limits. Growth, traffic congestion and new power plants will continue to increase emissions, she said.

Calling the EPA decision "a real disappointment for public health," Cortez said more stricter limits are still needed. The use of cleaner fuels could help achieve those goals, she said.

In tightening its fine-particle rule Thursday, the EPA also eliminated a limit for annual exposure to bigger, coarser particles, which come from sources such as rural dirt roads and dusty industries such as construction. Some U.S.-Mexico border infrastructure projects have sought to reduce those particles with road-paving projects.

Eliminating the coarse-particle limit runs counter to some science suggesting that long-term exposure to those particles is bad for human health. But it is an area that still requires research, a public health expert said.

Ralph Delfino, an adjunct professor in San Diego State University's School of Public Health, said "good evidence" exists linking exposure to coarse particles with ill health. But he acknowledged that controversy still exists about the magnitude of those particles' impacts.

"Certainly it's a good thing that they're strengthening the [fine particle] standards," Delfino said. "I don’t think anybody's going to argue against that. There's some question about the new coarse standards. Whether that's going to protect people like asthmatics, it's hard to say."

While the EPA's administrator said the government is "delivering cleaner air to all Americans," some were more skeptical. Delfino said questions remain about whether the tighter standards, which are required by the Clean Air Act to be updated every five years, are strict enough.

"Our air quality problems will continue," he said. "The problems will not go away with this. They may get better, but they won't go away."

2009 Dodge Challenger SRT to be shown at SEMA 2006

HEMISPERICAL BLOG | CARLSBAD - - Well, it finally it is here. SRT inhouse tuners are planning on SRT coupe. Lets hope it is packing with the next super Hemi 426-CUI, 575-HP V-8 engine. Seeing its competition, the 2007 Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang, the car will need it. Let alone the next Camaro SS.

SEMA 2005, SRT revealed the latest crate engine called the 6.4-Liter or a.k.a. the 392-CUI. A local sub-contractor in the LA basin, name withheld, taken a 6.1-Liter and increased the bore size and made some extensive modifications to bring the 425-HP to the next level performance of 500-HP. some other features which was made known to the public as they displayed the engine next to the 1970 plum colored Dodge Challenger SRT8 convertible.

That being said, what was told by our insider guru, that Chrysler was working on two more engines dubbed the 'Super Hemis'. Using its past muscle car heritage, he remarked that one was the legendary 426-CUI and the other the 440-CUI Wedge. Both of which will be designed around the 5.7-Liter engine as a base but adding the latest technology since then.

It has been discussed earlier that these two engine was to be used on limited basis. One with SRT and the other with a truck-line.

Seeing that the wind has changed again, a term we use quite frequently around here, meaning further errosion of sales with large truck based vehicles utilizing Hemi engine, SRT may get both of them for the sole purpose of providing added option to its growing vehicle lists. This is a good thing since the Ram SRT line didn't fair well in its third year of production with disappointing sales.

I tell you, this news almost made me wet my pants, noting my first ride was a old muscle car from the late sixties when I first hesard of it. Today, as a baby boomer, I am glad I can drive something that can the old performance heritage but now with updated safety features, latest electronics, and egonomics that fit well while driving the coupe.

Congrats to the boys in the design department and SRT. This car will sell.....

IL Insider: Hemi-Powered Dodge Nitro Charges in to SEMA

Date posted: 09-22-2006

Edmunds Inside Line SAN DIEGO - Dodge is preparing two hot-rod versions of its new Nitro SUV for the annual fall SEMA show in Las Vegas, including a Hemi-powered edition with 22-inch wheels and tires.

A Dodge Challenger Super Sport concept also will be unveiled at SEMA, but Chrysler declined to provide details.

Senior Design Manager Dennis Myles said Dodge will install a modified 5.7-liter Hemi V8 in the first SEMA Nitro, as well as a Tremec five-speed gearbox, Brembo brakes and 22-inch Alcoa wheels.

The idea, Myles said, is to create "an all-out performance" version. "We want to stir up and stimulate thinking about the Nitro," he said.

The Hemi-powered SEMA Nitro will be painted in black-purple metallic, with a two-tone black and slate-gray interior, according to Myles. A lower aero body kit will include new fascias, wheel arches and side sills. The cabin will sport four bucket seats from the Viper.

A second Nitro conversion ? both are being done in-house ? will be a white Mopar-themed panel wagon with special graphics on the sides. The rear seats will be removed and a sliding load floor installed to accommodate surfboards and other large gear.

What this means to you: The Nitro Hemi sounds like fun, but we're more interested in the Challenger SS "concept of the concept."

2007 Chrysler 300 Features Adaptive Cruise Control

BUSINESS FLEET NEWS | AUBURN HILLS MI - - Offered for the first time on a Chrysler Group vehicle, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) allows the driver to set a cruising speed and to set a specific following distance from other vehicles on the road.

Available on the 2007 Chrysler 300 Limited and Chrysler 300C, ACC detects vehicles in the Chrysler 300’s path, determines their speed and automatically maintains a pre-set following distance by braking or accelerating.

In addition, the system allows the use of cruise control above 25 mph without the need for the driver to reset or adjust based on traffic flow. It is designed to detect a vehicle directly ahead within a distance of 328 feet and automatically adjusts the cruise-control speed to continue moving with traffic at a set distance.

However, ACC is not designed to prevent collisions, will not react to a very slow or stopped vehicle and will not bring the car to a complete stop.

If the sensor does not detect a vehicle directly ahead, it functions as a standard cruise-control system, maintaining the designated speed. But when traffic speeds vary, ACC automatically adjusts to the speed of the vehicle ahead.

ACC applies braking (up to 25 percent of the braking system as needed) and accelerates automatically to maintain the preset distance from the preceding vehicle.

2007 Mercedes-Benz E320 BlueTec Price Announced - Car News

High-tech diesel offers superior torque and fuel economy for $1000 more than an E350.

BY STEVE SILER, September 2006

There is a lot to appreciate about the new 2007 Mercedes-Benz E320 BlueTec. For starters, it is powered by a technologically advanced 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V-6 that utilizes a sophisticated network of exhaust gas treatment devices that make the BlueTec the “world’s cleanest diesel,” according to Mercedes-Benz. Even better, the engine produces a whopping 400 lb-ft of torque between 1600 and 2400 rpm, good enough to propel the well-mannered luxury sedan from 0 to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds, only 0.1 second behind the E350 according to Mercedes. That should be fast enough to banish forever the widely-held perception of diesels as slow. Fuel economy, of course, is stellar: 27 mpg in the city, 37 mpg on the highway (Mercedes-Benz estimates), compared with 19/26 for the E350.

2007 Mercedes-Benz E320 BlueTec What is BlueTec?

BlueTec, according to Mercedes-Benz, is “a modular concept that utilizes several coordinated technical measures to minimize emissions within the engine and also provide for effective exhaust-gas treatment downstream.” Specifically, it involves an oxidation catalytic converter to reduce carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbons, a particulate filter and new techniques for reducing nitrogen oxide emissions. Achieving the latter goal starts in the engine itself, which reduces engine-out emissions through a combination of electronic engine control systems, four-valve cylinder heads, third-generation common-rail direct injection, variable-geometry turbochargers and exhaust-gas recirculation. All of the systems require no scheduled maintenance or replacement, according to Mercedes-Benz.

At this point, however, the E320 BlueTec is only clean enough to sell in 45 states. Mercedes-Benz anticipates that it will be a 50-state car when it perfects its urea injection AdBlue system, a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) process, sometime by 2009, when even more stringent Bin 5 emissions standards are implemented nationwide. AdBlue Injection treats exhaust gases with a urea solution which releases ammonia, reducing nitrogen oxides to harmless nitrogen and water. The solution is held in a tank that would require a refill only during scheduled maintenance. However promising, early prototypes with the AdBlue system failed Bin 5 tests, indicating that Mercedes-Benz still has a way to go to perfect the technology. Mercedes-Benz is optimistic that it will be compliant by 2009.

2007 Mercedes-Benz E320 BlueTec Attractive Pricing

On a more positive note, however, is the 2007 E320 BlueTec’s price, which, at $52,325, is just $1000 higher than that of the gas-powered E350. This pricing strategy follows that of the outgoing E320 CDI, which was a grand higher than the non-diesel E320. However, with the BlueTec engine’s significant advancements, we expected more of a jump in price over the E350 this year.

The attractive price should ensure that Mercedes-Benz will continue seeing a fairly high take rate for its E-Class diesel, especially in the face of rising fuel costs. The company sold an impressive 11,000 E320 CDIs since the launch of the vehicle during the 2004 model year.

The new E320 BlueTec is on sale as of October 16, 2006, just as the long-awaited, low-sulfur diesel fuel required for the BlueTec system to operate properly becomes available at diesel fuel pumps nationwide.

Dealers have to fix air bag and seatbelt problems on 1500s. (Dodge)

As if it weren't hard enough to sell a big 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 in a world where fuel efficiency is suddenly hip, dealers say recalls on some of the trucks mean they can't sell them even when there's a buyer.

The passenger air bags on 144,000 of the pickups could deploy with excessive force when rear-facing child seats are installed in the front passenger seats. And the front passenger seat belts on 159,000 of the trucks might not tighten when used with some car seats.

It's illegal for dealers to sell the affected trucks until they fix the problem, and dealers say they aren't getting the parts.

Chrysler Group spokesman Max Gates said the company would overnight the parts to any dealer that notified the company of a sale or potential sale.

But customer John Celini, 46, of Plymouth said dealers don't seem to know that.

He's been to two dealers in the last week trying to buy or lease a 2006 Ram 1500. He has completed the financing and is ready to go, but he still doesn't have a new truck.

"I was supposed to get this one either Friday or Monday. It was coming from another dealership once they got the parts" for the recall, Celini said. "I called Friday, they were still waiting. I still haven't heard back.

"They're all crying wolf that they can't sell nothing, but I've been trying to buy a truck for more than a week and nobody's calling me back. Now I don't even know if I want it."

Chrysler's Gates couldn't say how many of the recalled trucks have been sold and how many are sitting on dealer lots. The company plans to begin notifying owners of the problems in October, when the necessary parts are on hand for repairs.

Dodge Caliber's look stronger than its bite

Don Hammonds | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - -Dodge is one automaker that marches to its own drummer, and there are few of its products that fit that description more than the spunky new 2007 Dodge Caliber. Its four-door wagon/hatchback Caliber just barges in with a brutish "in your face" look abetted by the trademark Dodge Ram-style grille.

Dodge has created an advertisement with this car, showing it propped up on a copy machine photographing its rear end -- and if this car were a living thing, that's just about what I'd expect. Raucous, a little sexy, a little over the edge -- and all Dodge.

The Caliber slots just above the smallest entry-level compact cars, so let's tag it a premium compact. Our example, an all-wheel-drive Caliber R/T, came with a base price of $19,426 that, after adding a leather interior, power sunroof, Sirius digital radio and other goodies, came in at a final $24,035. Even that price should endear it to a bunch of folks who feel priced out of the all-wheel-drive market, where $30,000 or so seems the price of entry.

Power on this car comes from a 2.4-liter, 172-horsepower four-cylinder engine with fuel injection and a continuously variable automatic transmission. Gas mileage ratings were 23 in the city and 26 on the highway.

Daimler Chrysler
The 2007 Dodge Caliber is replacing the long-running Neon. The Caliber is a four-door/ hatchback with 48 cubic feet of cargo space when rear seats are folded.

Caliber's interior is full of interesting points. You can get a "Chill Zone" beverage storage bin that will keep four cans, bottles or any combination of the two cool; a removable, chargeable flashlight built into the rear headliner; an arm-adjustable armrest that slides forward and flips open to form a nice MP3 cradle; and an optional MusicGate Power 458 watt Boston Acoustics sound system that swings down from the rear liftgate when you open it.

The rest of the interior features a center stack and clear, easy-to-read gauges. Though the floor gear shift is a bit awkwardly mounted, you get used to it quickly.

The Caliber is fun to drive and generally handles pretty well. It sticks to curves nicely, and because the turning radius is small, it is also maneuverable and easy to park.

But it feels heavy on the road, and doesn't convey the excitement and fun that the exterior promises. Cars such as the Chevy Cobalt SS and Honda Civic will have an edge on the Caliber in the "fun" factor category.

A 300-horsepower, turbocharged, intercooled 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine is coming soon with the SRT-4 version, and I can just about guarantee you there won't be any boredom issues happening when that hits the road.

But the rest of the Caliber line is still a strong contender for compact car contenders -- just don't expect to head to the drag strip in one any time soon.

DaimlerChrysler unveils downsizing plan

By Naomi Spencer

On Tuesday, DaimlerChrysler Chairman Dieter Zetsche announced a large reduction in US vehicle shipments set to take effect this fall. The cuts are the latest in an ongoing restructuring scheme that also includes medical coverage cuts for hourly workers, layoffs and plant closures.

Shipment of 135,000 trucks, SUVs, and minivans will be halted under the decision, with 90,000 vehicles to be cut by September 30. The plan will reduce by nearly half the number of vehicles shipped to Chrysler, Jeep, and Dodge dealerships in the third quarter from the same period last year. This follows an announcement last week that Chrysler third-quarter losses may be $1.5 billion, more than double the company’s previous forecast. For the year, the North American division is projected to lose $1.2 billion.

Demand for large vehicles in the US dropped over the past year due to sharply higher gasoline prices and a generally slower economy. The automakers formerly known as the Big Three—General Motors, Ford, and the now number-fourth-ranked Chrysler—have responded to slower sales by downsizing operations, especially in Michigan.

Chrysler’s inventory reduction translates into a 16 percent production cut. GM cut its third- and fourth-quarter production by 20 percent; Ford is initiating second-half production cuts of 21 percent.

Last week, Ford announced that it intended to cut approximately 44,000 employees over the next few years, close 16 factories, and extend buyout options to all 75,000 hourly workers. Earlier this year, 113,000 GM workers were offered similar buyouts. So far, 35,000 have accepted.

In both restructuring plans, the United Auto Workers (UAW) union bureaucracy has proved itself instrumental in crafting and implementing cuts, as well as in extracting concessions from workers on pension and health care costs.

Nearly 15,000 white-collar Chrysler employees and 17,600 retirees were subject to a ninefold increase in their health insurance premiums earlier in the year in the name of restructuring. The lower-paid union members have been the target of concession demands since then.

Earlier in the month, the UAW rejected a proposal to reduce company healthcare coverage for 50,000 unionized Chrysler employees and 80,000 hourly retirees. The deal, reportedly similar to those imposed on GM and Ford workers, is devised to cut compensation by $340 million a year. Although UAW leadership conceded on medical coverage at Ford and GM under the pretense of staving off more extreme downsizing, the union had refused to consider Chrysler’s plan because the company was not in financial crisis.

After announcing the third-quarter losses, Chrysler executives made clear they would use the news as justification and leverage for the healthcare cuts. On Friday, Chairman Zetsche told an analysts’ meeting the company was “extremely dissatisfied by the position the union has taken” on concessions. “It’s a very strange position that we should first lose $10 billion before we have the same as Ford and GM,” he said, referring to the $10.6 billion lost by GM last year. “We will re-engage in this discussion and we will not stop before we get the results we need.”

In the face of such corporate aggression, the union has not even issued a response in defense of workers’ living standards. This is an indication that Chrysler will get its concessions, with the complicity of UAW officials. In fact, UAW President Ron Gettelfinger recently accepted a seat on the DaimlerChrysler supervisory board, effectively putting him in the role of corporate decision-maker rather than worker representative.

While Chrysler executives have not announced specific plant closures or mass layoffs in the US, Zetsche indicated that the company was pursuing outsourcing deals with companies located in low-wage Asian countries in order to cut production costs for smaller vehicles it insists cannot be manufactured competitively in the US.

When he became CEO over Chrysler in 2000, Zetsche made his reputation by immediately slashing 26,000 jobs and closing several plants. Talk of restructuring again has been muted, partly because such a gutting is an admission of the complete bankruptcy and cannibalism of corporate strategy over the last six years.

Nevertheless, on Tuesday, Chrysler CEO Tom LaSorda told reporters that all options were on the table. “We’re going to look at the total business,” he said, speaking to a telephone press conference. “We’re going to turn over all the rocks and determine where the cost structure sits and do things that are right from a financial prudence perspective.” From a millionaire executive, words such as “financial prudence” not only ring hollow but carry ominous implications for the workforce.

Without going into details, LaSorda implied that Chrysler was certain to shut down some factories, saying “the majority will need to stay open.” He said the company intended to cut output mainly with one-week shutdowns at truck and SUV plants and impose “temporary layoffs” on the US workforce. Out of the 14 North American plants, Chrysler currently has three in the US and one in Mexico closed.

The cumulative effects of job slashing and plant closures have been devastating in southeast Michigan, already the hardest-hit region in the country. The official unemployment rate statewide stands at 7.1 percent, the highest in the nation, and median household incomes have declined nearly 12 percent since 2000. The unemployment rates for former auto industry strongholds such as Detroit, Flint and Dearborn are much higher.

Last week, economists at the University of Michigan projected that the state’s unemployment rate would continue to rise through at least 2008. From 2003 to 2005, the state’s manufacturing sector lost 73,000 jobs. In July alone, 20,000 Michigan auto industry workers were laid off. In all this year, 29,700 manufacturing jobs have been cut, and economists estimate another 85,800 will be eliminated by 2008.

Caught: 2008 Jeep Liberty!

WINDING ROADS | September 20th, 2006 11:56 AM

liberty-mule-1-crop-sm.jpg

Looking for all the world like a leftover Dodge Nitro prototype, our spyshot-snapping friends at KGP Photography maintain that this is in fact the 2008 Jeep Liberty. Clock the vertical-element grille and different headlamp lenses, and their assertion quickly begins to come good.
We’ll let KGP Photography’s photogs take it from here:

At first glance, we thought this was an old Nitro prototype with some left over camouflage, but an obvious Jeep-style grille got our attention. We quickly realized that this prototype was the new Jeep Liberty, and it is far more than a Nitro with a Jeepish front fascia tacked on. The Dodge Nitro is based on a heavily modified platform of the current Jeep Liberty, resulting in a wheelbase longer by 4.0- inches (and 4.4-inches longer overall), but these larger dimensions are combined with a lower roof (chopped by 1.0-inch), giving the Nitro a squat roofline and relatively narrow window openings. After analyzing our shots of this Jeep tester, we’re convinced that the Liberty uses this same platform, but it appears to be a few inches taller than its Dodge brother–in the name of utility, and a closer family resemblance to the Jeep Commander.

(Click through for more shots and spy shooter musings)

The Liberty’s revised packaging results in a larger windshield, and revised roof pillars, which means that the Jeep shares few, if any, body panels with the Dodge. The Jeep face is clearly visible through the camo. Its seven-slat vertical grille is flanked by new headlight clusters (with some circular internal detailing to maintain familiar Jeep cues), and turn indicators that wrap into the flared front fenders (a trait shared with the current Liberty). Some version of the Nitro’s side fender-vents seem to be in play on the new Liberty, but with a different design treatment. Although the Jeep’s door panels are cleanly styled, they have a bit more surface development than the smooth-skinned Nitro, giving the Liberty a slightly chunkier look. The Jeep also has a different roof rack setup.

On to the rear, the Liberty gets revamped tail-light lenses and a
reworked rear bumper, but the changes are more thorough than that.
The Liberty’s taller rear window is hinged and has a grab handle, meaning that the rear glass can be raised independently from the rear hatch. The Nitro’s rear-access is strictly through the raised tailgate, giving a functionality edge to the Liberty. Although we couldn’t crawl under this prototype for an up-close inspection, it appears that the Liberty will utilize the same independent front suspension and five-link rear suspension found on the Nitro, but perhaps some changes are possible if Jeep engineers feel the need for some more trail-cred. We’ll have to catch one parked to figure that out for sure.

Give Jeep designers credit for not taking the easy way out and offering a Jeep-grilled Dodge Nitro. The changes visible on this prototype point to an effort to remain true to Jeep’s core values– utility and functionality over pure, street-inspired design. With the arrival of two sub-Liberty Jeep models–the Dodge Caliber-based Patriot and Compass–the next Liberty had to do some growing up. And it looks like it has. The 2008 model promises to be a more substantial vehicle moving away from the entry-level.

Dodge Avenger concept set for Paris show

Dale Jewett | Rick Kranz | Automotive News / September 20, 2006 - 11:27

DETROIT -- Will Dodge's bold styling attract buyers in international markets?

The Chrysler group is testing those waters with the front-drive Dodge Avenger concept sedan it will display next week at the Paris auto show.

The Avenger is about the same size as the Chrysler Sebring sedan, which in international markets is classified as the D segment. In a press release, the automaker said the concept "hints at the next-generation global D-segment vehicle from Dodge."

Industry sources say the Avenger is nearly identical to the 2008 Dodge Avenger that goes on sale next year. The Avenger will replace the Dodge Stratus sedan.

Chrysler group stylists worked from the Dodge Charger playbook in designing the Avenger's C-pillar and rear-fender bulge that flows into the rear door.

The Avenger's nose draws a family resemblance from the Dodge Caliber car.

The concept vehicle is fitted with 19-inch wheels and a spoiler on the trunk lid.

The automaker did not give any specifications or views of the Avenger's interior today, when it released images of the exterior. A press release notes that the concept is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel engine that could be used in markets outside North America.

The press release quotes Trevor Creed, senior vice president of design for the Chrysler group: "Avenger brings Dodge-brand American muscle-car heritage into the global mid-size car segment."

Is Chrysler next?

First GM restructures, then Ford, now everyone wonders

Josee Valcourt / The Detroit News - -Three years since its last turnaround, DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Group will make deep production cuts and consider more restructuring moves as it braces for big losses.

DaimlerChrysler Chairman Dieter Zetsche said Tuesday that the automaker will cut output by 90,000 vehicles in the third quarter -- up from previous estimates of about 75,000 -- and another 45,000 in the fourth quarter to bring dealer inventories more in line with consumer demand and make room in showrooms for new models that will roll out later this year.

Zetsche also said the Auburn Hills-based automaker may have to take more drastic cost-cutting measures in the wake of last week's announcement that Chrysler will lose $1.5 billion in the third quarter, more than double its July estimate of $600 million in red ink, and report a loss of $1.2 billion for the year.

"We have to clearly dig deeper into the top of Chrysler to make sure we further can accelerate the process of increased competitiveness," said Zetsche, whose comments came Tuesday during a presentation to analysts in a Webcast from DaimlerChrysler's Stuttgart, Germany, headquarters.

Neither Zetsche nor Chrysler CEO Tom LaSorda, who spoke to the media during a conference call Tuesday afternoon, detailed what further restructuring moves might entail.

"We're going to turn over all the rocks and determine where the cost structure sits and do things that are right from a financial prudence perspective," LaSorda said.

But Zetsche spoke harshly of Chrysler's performance and the automaker's failure to act more quickly as its problems mounted.

"It goes without saying that I myself am more than dissatisfied with the situation," he said. "It's not acceptable."

Rivals retrench at same time

Chrysler's losses loom as southeast Michigan's economy is already being buffeted by major restructurings at General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. As Chrysler thins inventory and considers other cost-cutting moves, its crosstown rivals are already closing plants and cutting thousands of jobs in a bid to restore profits

Mike Tremain, a worker at Chrysler's Warren truck plant, where Dodge Ram and Dakota pickups are built, said he's not surprised by talk of restructuring.

"They haven't been forthcoming and truthful about anything and unfortunately it's the little guy that's going to hurt," he said.

The production cuts come after Chrysler fell far short of July and August sales goals, Zetsche said. The action aims to reduce inventories, mainly of light trucks, that have been building as high gas prices prompted consumers to turn to more fuel-efficient models.

Seventy-one percent of Chrysler's retail sales are light trucks, which include pickups, sport utility vehicles and minivans. While Chrysler's overall sales are down 9.7 percent so far this year, truck demand is off 12.9 percent.

The automaker had counted on employee-pricing-for-all to work the same magic it did last summer but the incentive failed to drive showroom traffic, while consumers embraced free financing deals from GM and Ford. In the January through August period, Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep models sat on dealer lots an average 85 days, compared to 71 days for GM, 75 days for Ford and an industry average of 63 days, according to Edmunds.com, a car buyer's Web site.

"We were hoping that we could find our way out of this situation by continuously reducing our production, but not significantly, and increase our sales," Zetsche said. "The reality is that we fell short of those plans and relatively significantly."

The philosophy was "next month we will make it, next month we will make it" until the time came to "face the music."

Zetsche, who led Chrysler through a three-year turnaround launched in 2001 and turned the reins over to LaSorda last summer, was critical of Chrysler's stumble following 12 profitable quarters.

On the impending third-quarter loss, he said it was "utterly unacceptable to surprise (investors) the way that we did."

He acknowledged that some at Chrysler sibling Mercedes also were dismayed by the prospect of red ink in Auburn Hills.

"Definitely there was a strong reaction," Zetsche said, but he added, "There is more of an understanding that we're all together in one boat rather than, 'Look at those a--holes, there goes our bonus.' "

LaSorda: 'Full responsibility'

LaSorda holds himself accountable. "The decision for what's going on at Chrysler Group sits right on my lap. I take full responsibility."

LaSorda and Zetsche said the automaker will review all aspects of the business to search out cost-savings and other measures to help restore profits. But they said it is too early to talk about possible plant closings or layoffs.

"We have to ask structural questions of the business," Zetsche said. "I can't tell you the outcome, but we will ask those questions."

Chrysler will immediately work with suppliers to pursue cost cuts, and continue to push for health care concessions from the United Auto Workers, which Ford and GM have already secured.

UAW President Ron Gettelfinger has said Chrysler is in better financial shape than GM or Ford and does not need concessions.

"We are extremely dissatisfied with the position of the union as far as health care costs are concerned," Zetsche said. "It's a very strange position that we should lose $10 billion before we can have the same as Ford and GM."

UAW spokesman Roger Kerson declined to comment Tuesday.

Should Chrysler implement its own turnaround plan, experts predict it won't be as extreme as those at GM and Ford.

"They are not in the same position as GM and Ford in terms of having to take very drastic actions to improve profitability," said Chuck Moore, managing director at Conway, MacKenzie & Dunleavy in Detroit, which specializes in corporate turnarounds.

"Chrysler is probably in the best position of all the Big Three because they can move production around" to meet demand, he said.

Brian Ackerman, sales manager at Mike Riehl's Roseville Chrysler-Jeep, said Chrysler's move to trim inventory should alleviate pressure at dealerships.

"It's a good decision because it's important to line our inventory with the sales rate," he said.

While reducing vehicle output should also help Chrysler regain its financial footing, the company also must produce cars and trucks based on demand, said Tom Libby, an analyst at J.D. Power and Associates' Power Information Network.

"They have to improve their share and appeal to customers, which is a more strategic issue that includes the image of the brands and appeal of the products."

LaSorda said the rollout of 10 models this year, with eight to come, including the Chrysler Sebring midsize sedan, will help shift Chrysler's product mix to meet demand for fuel-efficient vehicles.

Small and midsize models will make up 27 percent of Chrysler's lineup next year, up from 21 percent this year, LaSorda said. And about one-third of Chrysler products will be less than a year old in 2007.

"We just need to get out there with great new product," he said.

Charles V. Tines / The Detroit News

Auto analysts say reducing vehicle output should help Chrysler regain its financial footing but the company also needs to produce cars and trucks based on demand. "They have to improve their share and appeal to customers," says Tom Libby, analyst at J.D. Power and Associates. See full image

  • Slashing Deliveries

Sarah Karush | THE ASSOCIATED PRESS |
DETROIT — Faced with vehicles languishing on U.S. dealer lots, Daimler-Chrysler AG said Tuesday it will slash retail deliveries by nearly 24 percent in the third quarter.

The lineup of subsidiary Chrysler Group has been bogged down by gas guzzlers and a misplaced faith in summer incentives. The move follows the lead of Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Corp., which previously announced production cuts in response to slow sales.

Chrysler is cutting retail shipments in the quarter that ends Sept. 30 by 90,000 vehicles to 290,000 vehicles. It had originally planned to ship 380,000.

The company plans to knock another 45,000 units off its schedule in the fourth quarter. For the entire second half of the year, retail shipments will be cut by 16 percent to 705,000 vehicles from the previous target of 840,000, Chrysler said. The cuts mean some plants will see temporary shutdowns between now and the end of the year. Chrysler officials said mostly truck plants would be affected, but they declined to pinpoint exactly which plants.

"Our goal here is to keep our dealers -- get them back -- into a more competitive inventory level, so we can be ready for the second-half new-product introductions," Chrysler Group Chief Executive Tom LaSorda said.

The company, which releases production schedules on a weeklybasis, currently has three plants in the U.S. and one in Mexico off line, out of a total of 14 North American plants.

Among the four plants idled this week is the South assembly plant in Fenton, where roughly 3,300 people build minivans. The others include a Jeep plant in Detroit; a Warren plant that produces the Dodge Ram and Dodge Dakota; and a plant in Saltillo, Mexico, that also makes the Dodge Ram, Chrysler spokeswoman Michele Tinson said.

The announcement came four days after Stuttgart, Germany-based DaimlerChrysler projected Chrysler's third-quarter loss would be $1.52 billion -- more than twice what it had previously anticipated.

Executives said there were no immediate plans to slash jobs or close plants permanently as Ford and GM have done recently, but they didn't rule anything out.

"We're going to turn over all the rocks and determine where the cost structure sits and do things that are right from a financial prudence perspective," LaSorda told reporters during a conference call.

DaimlerChrysler Chairman Dieter Zetsche said the company was forced to act after dismal sales this summer. Chrysler was counting on an employee-pricing promotion to drive sales after such promotions fueled record-breaking sales for the industry last year.

But Zetsche said this year's zero-percent financing offers from Ford and GM ended up being more successful.

GM and Ford also recently announced steps to trim inventories. GM said earlier this month that it expects third-quarter production to drop 8 percent from the same period last year and fourth-quarter production to decline 12 percent. Ford said in August that it would temporarily halt production at 10 plants between then and the end of the year, pushing full-year production down 9 percent from last year.

Chrysler gave its numbers in terms of retail shipments, rather than production, but LaSorda said the numbers roughly correspond.

HICKORY - When he graduated from Fred T. Foard High School in 1990, Jon Reep was named “Class Clown” by his fellow students.

Sixteen years later, he’s living up to the title.

Reep, 34, is a nationally touring comedian. He’s best known for being the redheaded redneck in Dodge Ram commercials, the one who leans his head out the window of a beat-up car to yell, “That thing got a Hemi?”

Reep returned to his high school stomping grounds Tuesday to perform his stand-up routine for students there.

He wasn’t your average motivational speaker.

Reep dashed into the gym wearing his old letter jacket and jersey - in his day, he played football for the Tigers.

“I know I’m the last guy that some of these teachers think would come back and lecture,” Reep said.

Then he launched into an animated story about putting out a grease fire with his letter jacket.

For about an hour, students listened and laughed while Reep talked about his high school experience, and how he realized his dream to became a professional comedian.

He talked about the joys of school lunches: “You can’t get that pizza anywhere else. Domino’s and Papa John’s, they don’t have that crap.”

He reminisced about his glory days playing football: “We had a perfect season. Zero and 10.”

He ribbed a few of his old teachers and told about the time he wrote down the lyrics to a Guns ‘N’ Roses song and turned it in as a journal entry in English class.

After Reep’s routine, students swarmed the comedian, snapping pictures with their camera phones and getting autographs on notebooks and T-shirts.

May Chung, 16, had Reep sign one of her schoolbooks - J.D. Salinger’s “Catcher in the Rye.” Reep crossed out the author’s name and scribbled his own.

    “He was hilarious,” Chung said.

    Dodge Avenger Concept Unveiled

    Avenger11

KICKING TIRES AUTO NEWS - - One week prior to the Paris Motor Show, Dodge gives us the first look at the Avenger concept. The vehicle is a concept in name only; expect the production version of the Avenger to look identical to this concept. It will probably debut at an upcoming American auto show in the next six months. In the U.S., the Avenger will most likely share the same engines, transmissions and pricing as the redesigned Chrysler Sebring that will roll off the assembly line any day now.

    Those Sebring engines include:

    • 173-hp four-cylinder shared with the Dodge Caliber, mated to a four-speed automatic and getting 24/32 mpg city/highway
    • 189-hp flexible-fuel V-6 that can run on E85 or gasoline, teamed with a four-speed automatic. Mileage is estimated at 22/30 city/highway
    • 235-hp V-6 with Chrysler’s new six-speed transmission, registering mileage of 19/28 mpg city/highway

The big difference between the two cars is of course the design. In that department the Avenger wins the sibling rivalry battle by a mile. Unlike the Sebring, Dodge used the best design elements of its current lineup for the Avenger. The rear flank is taken straight from the macho Charger sedan, while the front end builds off the Caliber but looks elegant for a Dodge. Expect prices in the range of $18,000 - $25,000 when it finally does end up in production sometime in the second half of 2007. Unfortunately there isn't much news about the concept until it bows in to the public in Paris next week. For now click below for more images.
