Exclusive 2006 SEMA Preview: Chrysler's SEMA Sebring's Sexier Than The Original

2006-Chrysler-SEMA-Sebring.jpg

JALOPNICK AUTO NEWS - - Now this is what the Chrysler Sebring should have been -- long lines on the front -- but none on the hood, toss in those working air scoops, a 4.0-liter V6 pushing out what has to be more than 250 hp, and -- pardon my domestic hard-on here -- but dammit if I ain't in love. This is Chrysler's official SEMA concept Sebring -- and I had the opportunity to get a first-hand look at it today as I travelled over to the inner design sanctum of the 'merican side of the German-American hybrid -- the DaimlerChrysler Tech and Design Center. Here's the first of six custom "SkunkWerks" vehicles put together by the design and engineering team for this year's SEMA show -- you know, for fun. We'll get you more information as we know it -- but for now, feast your eyes on the prettiness that could have been -- if only Chrysler had the requisite-sized testes to do it. Full gallery below.

Exclusive 2006 SEMA Preview: Yeah, This Dodge Nitro's Got A HEMI

DSC03186.jpg

JALOPNICK AUTO NEWS - - Remember that HEMI-powered Dodge Nitro we showed a quick sketch of last month -- the one Edmunds told us was going to be ready to show as a one-off at SEMA? We told you the vitals last time:

The modified 5.7-liter V8 [HEMI] will be paired with a Tremec five-speed, Brembo brakes and 22-inch Alcoa wheels (can't wait). The paint job will be a black-purple metallic (also known as blackberry), with a two-tone interior in black and slate gray, with four bucket seats lifted from the its Viper sibling.
Well, we can now confirm all of that's correct -- and on top of the gallery we've linked to below from our secret undercover mission into the heart of Auburn Hills, we can add to that the following additional details -- it's also got Yokohama tires (285/35R22) and Kicker subs in the trunk. Also, it's really pucking furple.

Bringing The Paneling To Carry The Shingles, Tools And Nails

DSC03205.jpg

JALOPNICK AUTO NEWS - - We'd seen one early sketch last month -- the same time we saw the early sketch on the big HEMI Nitro purple people eater we've already thrown to you power-hungry wolves out there -- and now we've got more pics and more deets for this SEMA SkunkWerks surprise from the boys n' girls at the Chrysler Group.

It's got a 3.7-liter, 12-valve, SOHC V6 pushing out 210 hp and 235 lb-ft of torque (not quite the HEMI Nitro's 360 hp, but enough for a bit of go). It's definitely got a bit of "hot rod" flavor -- or maybe a bit of surf wagon style. Either way, it's got modern flair due to the hand-fabrication and modifications made to the bodyside aperture, and it's got a very clear

Mopar theme going on with the unique rear compartment with custom storage bins and a sliding load floor beefier than the normal "load-n-go" found on the average Nitro. Strap on some one-off Alcoa-forged 20" wheels wrapped in big ol' BF Goodrich g-Force 265/50VR20's and you'll make any delivery person's day. Full gallery via the link below.

Exclusive 2006 SEMA Preview: Four-Door Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited -- Like A Hummer, Only Good

DSC03166.jpg

JALOPNICK AUTO NEWS - - While at the Paris Auto Show at the beginning of the month, Spinn and I walked past the Chrysler Group display and as we passed the four-door Wrangler Unlimited, we both made a startling realization -- the 4x4 with more off-road lineage than a Hummer could ever have totally has the potential to be a Hummer killer.

We even remarked as much to an auto writer with one of the local Detroit dailies later that evening, and we received the same agreement. Now what you have before you is obvs not the standard, it's actually a Rubicon model featuring some editions by the Jeep/Truck engineering-design build shops, a team run by 300C/Charger/Magnum design chief and all-around good sport Ralph Gilles. His team put together a 4-door 4x4 with an interior featuring custom Katzkin leather seating and powered it with a 3.0L CRD diesel with some Tru-Lok-equipped Dana 44 axles supporting the weight.

A performance suspension lift gives it the clearance to take on a set of 35-inch BFG (why yes, there're all sorts of acronym-busters for that one) Mud Terrain tires mounted on Custom 18-inch aluminum wheels supplied by Taneisya. The external toys also include a Warn 9.5ti winch mounted on American Expedition Vehicles (Who woulda thunk there'd be an AEV connection here, right?) new front bumper. And yes, it does look like a billion and a half bucks sprayed in that Rolex Silver paint -- and you probably will only feel for maybe a split second like you're driving in a G500 look-alike.

American Axle, BorgWarner Post Weaker Results on Automaker Cuts

By Jeff Bennett | Oct. 27 (Bloomberg) -- American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings Inc. reported a third-quarter loss and BorgWarner Inc. said earnings declined, as auto-parts suppliers struggle because of production cuts by General Motors Corp. and other carmakers.

The net loss at American Axle was $62.9 million, for its first unprofitable quarter since becoming a publicly traded company in 1999. BorgWarner, a maker of turbochargers and other engine parts, said earnings fell 36 percent to $39.2 million.

The results prompted BorgWarner to say it will expand in emerging markets such as India and China to counter falling demand in the U.S. American Axle said it will extend job cuts to salaried staff. GM, Ford Motor Co. and DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler will make 702,000 fewer vehicles in North America in 2006's second half, and production may not increase next year.

``The tough times could continue,'' said John Novak, a Morningstar Inc. analyst based in Chicago. ``We don't know where the bottom is for GM, Ford, and Chrysler, but further contraction is likely.''

Those automakers' cutbacks are squeezing U.S. auto-parts companies. Four major suppliers -- Delphi Corp., Dana Corp., Tower Automotive Inc. and Collins & Aikman Corp. -- are in bankruptcy protection. The automakers are building fewer vehicles in North America as they lose U.S. market share to Asian competitors such as Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co.

Results at American Axle and BorgWarner lagged behind analysts' estimates. The shares of Detroit-based American Axle shares fell 50 cents, or 2.5 percent, to $19.57 at 12:17 p.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. BorgWarner, based in Auburn Hills, Michigan, dropped $2.02, or 3.3 percent, to $59.29.

American Axle

American Axle said its net loss was $1.25 a share. A year earlier, the company had net income of $19.3 million, or 38 cents. Sales fell 17 percent to $701.2 million. The company relies on GM for about three-fourths of its revenue, and sales to the automaker fell 14 percent.

``Non-GM sales fell 26 percent, presumably led by Chrysler,'' said Himanshu Patel, a JP Morgan Securities analyst in New York with a ``neutral'' rating on American Axle. ``These declines were driven by production cuts, as well as a 3 percent decline in content per vehicle.''

Chief Executive Officer Richard E. Dauch told analysts on a conference call that he will eliminate jobs of some salaried employees, without giving details. American Axle in early October offered buyouts of as much as $100,000 to about 6,000 United Auto Workers members at five plants in Michigan and New York.

``It's far too early to tell how many will take the buyout offer,'' Dauch said.

American Axle will trim excess capacity by shifting machinery, he said, without saying whether any plants will close.

American Axle said it had costs of $93.1 million, or $1.17 a share, for post-employment benefits. Excluding those, the loss would have been 8 cents a share. The average estimate was a loss of 5 cents a share in a survey of 14 analysts by Thomson Financial, which doesn't provide the basis for its figures.

BorgWarner

BorgWarner said its profit declined to 68 cents a share, from $61.4 million, or $1.07, a year earlier. Sales rose less than 1 percent to $1.06 billion, including a 14 percent drop in the U.S. and a 13 percent gain outside the region.

To cope with the U.S. production cutbacks, BorgWarner said it will expand in growing markets such as South Korea, India and China.

The company said it expects to win $1.7 billion of new contracts from 2007 through 2009. About 73 percent will come from Asia and Europe, and most of the sales will be engine-related parts such as turbochargers and ignition systems.

`Well-Positioned'

``It was a tough quarter in North America, but it is encouraging to see the international results,'' said Morningstar's Novak. ``Longer-term, the company looks to be well- positioned.''

The company repeated its outlook for full-year 2006 profit to decline as much as 5.3 percent from 2005, excluding a 15-cent charge for job cuts. Efforts to trim expenses won't make up for a decline profit margin and higher costs for materials such as nickel, it said.

Excluding certain items that BorgWarner said were one-time costs, the company earned 81 cents a share in the third quarter. On that basis, BorgWarner lagged behind the 87-cents-a-share estimate in a Thomson Financial survey of 16 analysts.

GM, Ford and Chrysler combined will build about 702,000 fewer cars and trucks in the second half of the year. Each vehicle has an average of $12,550 in components, according to a Merrill Lynch report published in April. That translates into about $8.81 billion in lost revenue for auto-parts companies in the second half of the year.

Dodge News - Dodge’s new diesel debuts at Texas State Fair - true potential will soon to be seen

TSIKOT - - The Texas State Fair was the location of another big truck announcement last week when Dodge announced its new Cummins turbo-diesel engine for the 2007 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500. Enlarged to 6.7 liters from 5.9 through increases in both bore and stroke, the new inline-six turbodiesel now boasts 350 horsepower and 650 ft-lbs. of torque, all while meeting stricter diesel emissions standards for 2007. The engine also features an optional exhaust brake function that improves braking under heavy towing situations, a common feature of big rigs and large motor coaches.

HEMISPERICAL | LA - - However, know one asked the question on what potential lies within this lil gem....as I was told, the potential will be revealed by the Banks crew soon enough but too allow the 'CAT OUT OF BAG', this engine can achieve more than 1200-lbs of TQ. Doing so is something we have to wait and see when they attempt the monster run in Salt Lake Flats.

October 26, 2006

Designed in partnership with Van Hool, UTC Power, and ISE Corporation, AC Transit's fuel cell bus represents the most advanced, fuel-efficient, zero-emission, hybrid-electric, hydrogen fuel cell bus in the world.

Eleven member companies of the National Hydrogen Association are on teams receiving portions of $43.5 million in awards from the Federal Transit Authority (FTA) in support of a program to make ten percent of all bus purchases in the US hydrogen fuel cell buses by 2015. The program represents a large step in the development of a zero-emissions public transportation system
"While national and international hydrogen attention is largely focused on transforming the personal vehicle, much of the public is likely to first experience quiet, zero-emission, fuel cell buses."
--NHA President Jeff Serfass.
"While national and international hydrogen attention is largely focused on transforming the personal vehicle, much of the public is likely to first experience quiet, zero-emission, fuel cell buses," said NHA President Jeff Serfass. "We are very proud that so many of our members are leading the way in implementing the use of hydrogen in the public transportation market."

The NHA members include Ballard Power Systems, Daimler-Chrysler, GE Research, Hydrogenics, ISE Corporation, New York Power Authority (NYPA), Nuvera Fuel Cells, Shell Hydrogen, South Carolina Research Authority (SCRA), University of South Carolina (USC), and UTC Power. In addition NHA Affiliate, Weststart/CALSTART, was selected by the FTA to receive a share of the funding.

The new FTA program was championed by Congressman Jim Obestar (D-MN) and Congresswoman Mary Bono (R-CA), who joined FTA Administrator James Simpson in announcing the federal grants. The grants were made possible as part of the Transportation Equity Act (SAFETEA-LU).

"The expansion and use of fuel cell and hydrogen technology is a necessary and innovative step to significantly reduce dependency on foreign oil," remarked Representative Bono during the announcement. "Americans and Congress must continue to support legislation that strengthens any efforts to diversify our nation's energy portfolio."

The individual projects represent a wide variety of fuel cell bus research and demonstration projects in Alabama, South Carolina, Connecticut, Washington DC, and California. NHA members Ballard, ISE Corp, Shell Hydrogen, and UTC Power have teamed with the Washington Metro Area Transit Authority which was granted $8.4 Million for advanced bus development and in-service evaluation of hybrid fuel cell buses. USC and SCRA have a $5.67 million project that will bring the first fuel cell bus to South Carolina in time for the NHA's Annual Hydrogen Conference which in 2009 will be held in Columbia, SC. Other NHA member projects include GE and NYPA's lightweight fuel cell hybrid bus; a fuel cell bus fleet in Massachucetts with Nuvera Fuel Cells; DaimlerChrylser's and Hydrogenics' compound fuel cell hybrid bus in San Francisco; and an ISE Corp/ UTC Power collaboration which will design and demonstrate a 40-foot fuel cell bus for use in hot desert climates.
