2009 Dodge Roadster 'Codename PW27' showing in Geneva 2007?

Hemi Blog - - As you can guess, out of the three cars left that auto occult insider artist Mark S. rendered, there is but one left - dubed 'PW27'.

According to one insider, nicknamed the next 'B'Segment as DODGE ROADSTER, this gem should be debuting sometime within the next coming year at an European Auto show. We suspect that it would be 2007 Geneva International Auto Show since it is based on the Dodge Hornet/Polo platform and maybe built by a DaimlerChrysler sub-contractor in China who is xurrently building Jeeps. Thus leaving the Paris Auto Show for the 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser.

Looking at o2ho, DCX insider, the engine/platform listing shows that this PW27 will receive some heathy performance - 2.4ltr Turbo Motor [code ED4]. Not bad for little stout roadster. If it the same measure of performance thats going into the Caliber SRT4, then I am game for this car.

Stay tune more updates as soon it is more clear.

AMC makes a comeback as a 'Cheap-no-thrill' Brand?

HEMISPERICAL BLOG, DamilerChrysler AG, Stuttgart, Germany - - You never know what to expect these days in the automotive industry as the ‘WIND BLOWS’ in myriad of different direction, an insider who name will be kept secret, including Internet forum alias, works the corporate side of DaimlerChrysler, held a brief discussion on the future expansion of this global corporation. One question that was raised was the ongoing speculation of a ‘cheap thrill’ brand to compete against Toyota’s Scion line. As he nodded, his mouth parted with a large grin in shaking his head in a vertical fashion. Hmm…quite revealing that there is some truth to this rumor that been floating since the last three years or so.

Well, I was taken back on his motion in seeing previous reports by CEO of DaimlerChrysler AG, Dieter, on numerous occasions that there is no brand in the making. For me, I had to ask the obvious question: “Is there a brand resurrection in the foreseeable future that will be added to the Chrysler line to compete against Scion?” As he looked around the room and then back with a stern voice came, “Yes”. Have you ever felt chills running down from your head to the back of your neck? I did! It was moment of truth hitting me directly in the face. Besides the questioning of a future brand model lines up to CY2012, my penitence of prying the brand name is too resistible. I didn’t know what to think or fear corporate reprisal if the word was out on the street of future divulge information on what is coming and pointing back at our ‘X’ person. According to an informant at Allpar.com, Chrysler bigwigs held a meeting not long ago over the issue of spy pictures, inside information, and lists that reveal future model productions, names, and so forth. I made mentioned of this thread to him to see his reaction.

Now this was stunning - - - he mentioned a so called ‘Hit List’ of names, Internet sites, Internet users’ alias that DC corporate security has drafted to quell this problematic issue since the days of http://www.car-truck.com/ . “You are one of them…” He stated. He went on to say, “They simply don’t know how or what to do in your case versus inside company informants or suppliers releasing product information or pictures.” Well, I don’t receive any monetary funds for writing, images, or divulging information on a particular subject maybe a safe guard. Interesting though, what was mentioned by him, is the cropped picture of the ‘Dodge Rebel’, ‘Dodge Colt’, and the previous SRT4 sketches, how much attention it received from upper management of DaimlerChrysler AG CEO himself. Not to forget those in North America corporate bigwigs. This was nothing more than information hunch that there is something to the design aspect of Mitsubishi products that had many Chrysler design cues. Then Autoweek broke the story of the Pacifica Advance Design Studio involvement of the Lance Evolution X and other Mitsubishi products. Back to the brand story, I was hesitating to ask which brand is being planned for a comeback but had to ask that ‘million dollar’ question. He said, “Watch the trademark posting.” I said, “What?” “You going to find that posted trademark names under various categories and soon make the final post in the ‘Automotive Vehicles’ category.” I was in shock. Under our own noses, I had been seeing a particular name that keeps popping up for toys, clothing, parts, and so forth. Never in my right mine did I think that this brand will make a come back to America in a million years.

Welcome back - - AMERICAN MOTORS - - date planned is 2010. Is this the beginning of the cheap thrill brand? I was caution though; winds can change in a couple years or so.

Premium small cars next big thing?

John LeBlanc, For CanWest News Service Published - - mid the layoffs, plant closings and general hand-wringing surrounding Ford's Way Forward turnaround plan, according to The car Connection, it could also mean accelerating the impending release of some interesting rides.

During the presentation of Mark Fields, Ford's president of the Americas, clay models of the Fairlane people-mover (a Wind-, er, Freestar replacement concept shown at the 2005 Detroit auto show) and the Refl ex coupe concept (a small, rear-drive coupe from the Detroit show) were front and centre.

And with Ford telling anyone within earshot that premium small cars are the next big thing, it's likely the current European Ford focus (which shares its mechanicals with the Mazda3/5 and Volvo S40/ V50) is on its way to North America earlier than 2010, as planned.

HEAVY DROOLERS WELCOME
If the Chrysler Group's newly announced Chrysler Aspen, Dodge Caliber or Jeep Wrangler had you drooling with anticipation, no worries -- they can take it.
All three will be the fi rst in the company to offer YES Essentials seat fabric, which repels stains, controls odours, reduces static electricity and takes out the garbage (OK, that last feature I made up).

According to Chrysler, the fabric has something called "dual-action technology" to repel such nasty stains as coffee, red juice, lipstick or even permanent marker.

So, if personal hygiene isn't one of your roommate's strong suits, you can now offer him a ride, as the upholstery also controls bacteria-based odours inside the vehicle, inhibiting the growth of mould, mildew and germs.

NEW BOND, FAMILIAR CAR
It really isn't fair, is it? In the next Bond fl ick, a remake of Casino Royale coming in November, not only does the new 007, Brit Daniel Craig, get both great gadgets and babes to play with, once again, he's also getting an Aston Martin to drive. Craig will be at the wheel of the new Aston DBS in the fi lm, which he's already taken for a spin at Aston headquarters in England.
Except for brief stints with BMWs and Lotuses, an Aston has been Bond's usual ride since 1964 with Goldfi nger.

Two-mode hybrids versus diesels

AUTOGREEN BLOG NEWS - - If people thought high gas prices spelled the demise for the large SUV and truck industry, they are sadly mistaken. Automotive curmudgeon Jerry Flint writes how the segment plays an important role in sustaining the domestic automakers financially and is the one in which they'll soon be unleashing their greatest advantage.

The advantage is the two-mode hybrid engine. Developed through a three-way collaboration between General Motors, DaimlerChrysler, and BMW, the engine not only provides up to a 25 percent increased fuel economy compared to a V-8, but provides additional power to haul large or heavy loads. Even better, two-mode hybrids have been optimized for highway as well as city driving. Hybrids by Ford, Honda, and Toyota are designed primarily for fuel economy especially in city driving. GM will probably roll out the new engine first in its large SUVs like the Suburban while Chrysler will install the engine in its Dodge Durango. BMW and Mercedes-Benz (the other half of DaimlerChrysler) are considering implementing the engine in their luxury vehicles.

Automakers who were not part of the two-mode hybrid development are looking at diesel technology in compensation. Diesel provides many similar benefits: high mileage and plenty of torque. U.S. environmental laws, though, have proven to be a real stumbling block. Flint sees no clear winner between the two technologies or if there will be any competition at all: in one of his four scenarios, competitors may license the two-mode technology for their own use. Regardless what ultimately happens, he sees trucks and SUVs continuing to play a role in domestic automakers' futures.

Oil hits record as Israel attacks

By Chris Flood, FT.COM NEWS - - Oil prices surged to a record high on Thursday as violence in the Middle East escalated after Israel launched air strikes against the Lebanese capital, firing “at least six rockets” at the runways of Rafik al-Hariri International Airport in Beirut.

IPE August Brent rose more than 1 per cent to a record $75.45 a barrel before easing back slightly to $75.31.

Nymex August West texas intermediate also rose more than 1 per cent to a record $75.89 a barrel before edging back to $75.75 in electronic trade.

The escalating violence in the Middle East adds to ongoing geo-political tensions over Iran’s nuclear enrichment programme and concerns over North Korea’s missle development programme.

The Israeli stock market was affected by the upswing in violence with the benchmark TA-25 index down 3.7 per cent to 752.96 while the broader TA-100 index fell 4.1 per cent to 763.64.
The Israeli currency was also weaker with the sheckel trading 1.7 per cent lower against the dollar at Shk4.3675.

The geo-politcal tensions saw gold firmer at $650.90 a troy ounce from New York’s late quote of $649.25.

Analysts have warned that oil prices could spike to $100 a barrel if the situation in the Middle East continues to deteriorate against a background of extremely strong demand fundamentals.

On Wednesday, the International Energy Agency said growth in demand was expected to rise more quickly through 2011 than it had for a decade. The IEA forecast that the world would need an extra 1.57m barrels a day more oil to supply economic growth in 2007, up from the projected growth of 1.21m barrels a day this year.

Robots meant to increase efficiency slow production

Alex Gary, ROCKFORD REGISTER STAR, BELVIDERE — Last winter, contractors installed more than 700 robots in the DaimlerChrysler assembly plant’s body shop as part of a $419 million investment to make the plant the most flexible and automated of the company’s 14 North American factories.

The Swedish-made ro-bots were intended to make the place more efficient. Instead, it turns out they are the main reason the Belvidere operation has fallen behind on production of the Dodge Caliber and Jeep Compass, according to the person in charge of manufacturing for the Chrysler Group.

The fact the plant isn’t meeting production targets came to light July 3 when DaimlerChrysler officials announced sales of the Caliber dropped 2.6 percent from May to June. The sales dip was not because the car isn’t popular; it may be the most sought-after domestic new car in the past three years. It was because workers at the plant aren’t turning out enough of them.

Frank Ewasyshyn, executive vice president of manufacturing, said in a telephone interview from Chrysler headquarters in Auburn Hills, Mich., that software issues are causing frequent shutdowns in the body shop, some for just a few minutes but many for 45 minutes or more.

“This is the most ambitious product launch we’ve ever had,” Ewasyshyn said. “We’re doing way more than we’ve ever done, and it isn’t like ‘Geez, we didn’t think things would go wrong.’ ”
While Ewasyshyn said the company expected some rough going, an executive at Troy, Mich.-based Harbor Consulting, said her sources in the industry are saying the problems are worse than the company anticipated.

“They are having to burn considerable overtime to try to meet the production targets,” said Michelle Hill, director of benchmarking in North America for Harbor. The company produces the annual and influential Harbor Report, which tracks which plants are most efficient at producing vehicles. The Belvidere operation has long been a star for Chrysler in the Harbor publication, annually ranking as the company’s most efficient.

Hill said that’s unlikely to be the case when the next report comes out in 2007.

“From what I’m hearing, it’s not people issues, it is the body shop,” Hill said. “The company apparently wasn’t nearly as ready to launch when it did. They need to get this fixed. Chrysler has shifted a lot of investment into Belvidere.”

Officials at the three Dodge dealerships in Winnebago, Boone and Ogle counties — Anderson Dodge in Rockford, Brian Bemis Auto Mall in Oregon and Belvidere Motors in Belvidere — have heard that the plant is running anywhere from a 70,000 to a 130,000 Caliber backlog.

What’s going wrong
The automated body shop in Belvidere was set up to handle as many as four different models. As parts pass through, each robot does its specific task and then passes the part on to the next robot. When working correctly, it’s a symphony of manufacturing perfection. The company proudly featured the body shop, its robots silently turning, soldering, sparks flying, during a media day in February.
The problems stem from the computer programs that coordinate the robots. Ewasyshyn said the multiple configurations of the Compass and Caliber are causing “interface issues.”
He said every robot has an “interference zone” and if a part breaches it, the system automatically shuts down. He said if a part just passes through the interference zone without touching, workers simply restart the system. If the parts touch, however, then technicians have to program the system so that it doesn’t happen again the next time the body shop encounters the same parts configuration.

“If the parts touch, getting everything ready to go again takes a half-hour to 45 minutes,” Ewasyshyn said. “Just with the Caliber and the Compass, we have eight different variants when you factor in the European versions with the different steering wheel sides and the diesel versions. We have 700 robots and a lot of different permutations to work through.”

The multiple configurations, won’t go away soon, and in fact will get more complicated. The Jeep Patriot is scheduled to go into production in the third quarter of the year as well as the Caliber SRT4, a 300-horsepower version targeting the muscle-car market.

“Each one is going to add a whole new set of twists, and we’ll have to get them sorted out,” Ewasyshyn said.

In terms of quality, Ewasyshyn said the Caliber launch is “the best in the company’s history in that respect.”

Indeed, dealers have reported few buyer complaints on the Caliber, six months into its life. The Dodge and Plymouth Neon, which the Caliber and Compass replaced, had two major recalls by this time in their first year more than a decade ago.

Third shift starts Sunday
Overall, the DaimlerChrysler plant has been a steady source of good news since company officials announced in January 2005 they were going to renovate the plant and give workers a bevy of new models to produce. The Caliber, an aggressive-looking cross between an SUV and a sporty coupe, has been very well received. In June, its fifth month of availability, Calibers were spending an average of just 11 days on car lots nationwide, the same time it was taking to sell them in March. That’s virtually unheard of in the industry. Typically, in each successive month cars spend more time on lots before selling because production is increasing and the wow factor is wearing off.

Those statistics caused Tom Libby of the Power Information Network, a J.D. Power and Associates company, to call the Caliber the strongest domestic car launch in the past 37 months.
Workers began making retail versions of the Jeep Compass May 30, and the more suburban-friendly Jeep began showing up on dealer lots in late June. Initially thought to be somewhat of a risk, early reviews of the Compass have been positive.

The plant was down to 1,650 workers on one shift when the Caliber went into retail production in January. In March, DaimlerChrysler reestablished a second shift and boosted the payroll to 2,650. A third shift with 1,000 more workers kicks off Sunday night at 11 p.m., about a week earlier than expected. When workers report, it will mark the first time in the plant’s 41-year history that it will be operating 24 hours a day.

Workers were talking about robot issues in May, when the company announced it would start the third shift. LaToya McClain, a seven-year DaimlerChrysler employee who lives in Rockford, said reaction in the plant over the third shift was mixed. She said workers were happy the Caliber was doing so well but concerned that first-shift workers were continually being sent home early because of problems with the body shop.

“How can we have a third shift when the robots aren’t staying together long enough for two shifts?” McClain asked in May.
Lesson learned?

Hill of Harbor Consulting said she hopes DaimlerChrysler officials are focusing on fixing the computer issues and not banking on the third shift to take care of the production issues.
“That’d be a very expensive fix,” she said.

Hill said DaimlerChrysler was too ambitious in its makeover of Belvidere.

“A new body shop, a new car, a new engine, sequencing parts for the first time,” Hill said. “Toyota wouldn’t operate this way. Toyota would put in the body shop and run it for a year, then they’d put in a new car and run it for a year, then they’d put in a new engine. They’d work out all of the problems before moving on to the next system.

“When working on future launches, Chrysler needs to take a long look at what’s happening in Belvidere,” she said.

All-Hybrid Rental Agency Sees Profits

AUTO RENTAL NEWS LOS ANGELES CA - - All-Hybrid Rental Agency Sees ProfitsJuly 12, 2006 As founder and chief executive of EV Rental Cars, a Los Angeles agency devoted solely to hybrid vehicles, Jeff Pink is one of the few U.S. business owners actually profiting from the current surge in oil prices, according to The Wall Street Journal. Daily rental rates range from $35 to $75 for the gasoline/electric hybrids in his fleet, including Toyota's Prius, Camry and Highlander, the Honda Civic and the Ford Escape. EV's cars can command at least a $10-a-day premium over most comparable all-gas rentals. Pink says EV turned a profit last year on revenue of $4 million and expects to take in $5 million to $6 million this year, The Wall Street Journal reports.

With 425 cars and eight rental locations on the West Coast, EV Rental is barely a blip on the radar screen compared with car-rental giants. But the company's stable of hybrids has thrust it into the industry spotlight.

Even Enterprise Rent-a-Car Co., one of the largest rental agencies, has only about 50 hybrids in its fleet of roughly 650,000 cars, and it can't expand that portion because the supply of hybrids is so tight. Because he’s making a profit and with an additional boost from government grants, Pink can pay retail prices for hybrids, something the big players can’t afford to do.

As EV transitioned its vehicle stock to hybrids, events conspired to give it a surge. California decided in 2005 to let hybrids with single drivers ride in High Occupancy Vehicle lanes, and fuel prices rose dramatically.

But when and if gas prices fall, consumer appetite for hybrids could wane. Or if the reverse happens and consumer demand for hybrids takes off, manufacturers might increase supply, allowing big rental agencies to potentially squeeze EV Rental out.

Pink says if he can build up enough inventory, and if the hybrid market takes off, EV Rental might make an attractive acquisition target. He expects to have 1,500 cars by the end of 2007 and 2,500 the next year.

Utah Highway Patrol to Replace Fleet With Dodge Chargers

SALT LAKE CITY, UT – Utah Highway Patrol (UHP) will add 350 Dodge Chargers to its police vehicle fleet over a three- to four-year period starting with 2006-models, according to KSL News Radio.

The Utah Highway Patrol picked the Dodge Charger because it has excellent “get up and go” for when troopers are chasing down speeders, with 340 horsepower. It also gets better gas mileage, and each Charger will have a digital camera installed in it, so video of high-speed chasing and arrests will be much more clear, according to KSL News Radio. Use of the digital cameras also allows for the video to be downloaded to a database once the trooper is in range of their building. The video can then be accessible on demand.

ForTwo EV: Smart car goes electric

LEFT LANE BLOG NEWS, 12 JUNE 2006 - - DaimlerChrysler today announced that an all-electric version of the Smart Fortwo will be available in the near future. The automaker will first run a market trial for the car over in Britain. Initially, it will be leased to select corporate customers. If all goes well, we may see the car offered in other markets, including here in North America. The Fortwo EV offers even better in-town performance than its gasoline powered stablemate, with 0-30 mph in 6.5 seconds. The Smart EV also sets a new benchmark in the electric vehicle sector; it has 30kW output and a top speed of 70 mph. Smart will begin selling its cars in the United States in 2008. It's not known if the 'EV' model will be ready for mass sale by that time, though it remains a distinct possibility.

Third shift starts early at Chrysler

Alex Gary, ROCKFORD REGISTER STAR, BELVIDERE — About 1,000 people will begin their jobs at DaimlerChrysler’s Belvidere assembly plant a week earlier than previously announced.

The third-shift at the 3.9-million-square-foot plant will begin at 11 p.m. Sunday. Earlier start dates centered around the last week in July. The new workers will bring employment at the plant to about 3,600.

This is the first time in its 41-year history the plant will run 24 hours a day.
Workers are making the Dodge Caliber and the Jeep Compass. Production of a third model, the Jeep Patriot, is scheduled to begin later this third quarter.

The plant was down to 1,650 workers on one shift when the Caliber went into retail production in January. In March, DaimlerChrysler reestablished a second shift and boosted the payroll to 2,650.

That thing got a Hemi? No, not really.

5.7-liter Hemi Magnum V-8 cylinder head

- nothing hemispherical about it.

Note the irregular shape.(click to enlarge image)

AUTOMOBILE MAGAZINE By Don Sherman - - With the possible exception of FORD, HEMI is the most celebrated set of four letters in all automobiledom. At the mere mention of the word, teens drool, musclecar mavens bow, and mothers draw small children under protective arms. The actor Jon Reep launched his career by uttering, "That thing got a Hemi?" in recent Dodge Ram television ads.

After three decades of retirement, the return of the Hemi engine ranks with the capture of Sadam Hussein as righteous proof of America's unyielding spirit. At least that's what I, as a member of the 1960s Hemi-owning and admiring generation, thought upon hearing that Chrysler was resuscitating its Hemi. But, upon close inspection of the new engine's innards, I was disappointed to find that the vaunted hemispherical combustion chambers are NOT part of the deal.

The HEMI name comes from the dome-shaped ceiling atop each cylinder inside some engines, a configuration that has seen wide aircraft, motorcycle, and racing use since it was introduced by obscure Belgian car maker Pipe in 1905. The key benefit is that the hemispherical dome facilitates extra large intake and exhaust valves, a relatively uninhibited pathway for fuel and air into the cylinder, and an easy means for spent exhaust gasses to escape. The easier it is for an engine to pump its working fluids, the more power it produces.

Chrysler first experimented with Hemi designs for World War II aircraft engine use. The fruit of that research appeared under the hoods of 1951 Chrysler Saratoga and New Yorker sedans. Chrysler's first hemi-headed V-8s produced 180 horsepower versus Cadillac's 160 hp and Oldsmobile's 135 hp, lighting the fuse on the original horsepower war.

DeSoto and Dodge picked up variations on the hemi theme for 1952-58 models. In 1964, when Chrysler needed a hot engine for stock car and drag racing, a second generation V-8 was introduced and a version informally called street hemi was offered to civilian Dodge and Plymouth buyers. My 1968 Hemi Road Runner generated a mighty 425 horsepower and ran over 110 mph in the quarter mile.

To find out how Chrysler's new 5.7-liter V-8 could be labeled Hemi in spite of the fact its combustion chambers look nothing like sliced grapefruit, I met with Bob Lee, Chrysler's vice president of powertrain product engineering.

Lee assured me no deception is afoot. The engineers responsible for Chrysler's new engine had better intentions than merely dusting off Hemis in the back of their closet. Early in the research phase, they discovered a combustion chamber that Porsche used for 1965-97 air-cooled 911s offered the ideal starting point for their new design. Porsche's head happened to be a hemi.

Engineers are not about to leave well enough alone so little from the Porsche design made the long trip to what's now called the 5.7-liter Hemi Magnum V-8. Much of the bowl area of the combustion chamber was filled in to encourage the fuel-air mixture to stir itself prior to ignition.

The chamber is shallower than past Hemis so the top of the piston can be nearly flat, thereby saving reciprocating weight. The one vestige from Porsche's classic design is large valves rotated 90 degrees from the most common orientation (in a plane parallel to the crankshaft), and splayed at a 34.5-degree angle in the interests of free breathing.

The natural course of engineering evolution has moved Chrysler's hero powerplant far from its Porsche roots and severed all ties to the Hemis of yore. Even though it isn't a genuine hemi, this engine still packs a powerful punch as a marketing ploy.

Luxury Institute Survey: Ultra-High Net Worth Consumers Rate Rolls Royce, Maybach and Bentley Top Ultra-Luxury Autos in 2006

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 12, 2006--When you spend over $100K on a car, it better deliver a great deal more than luxurious transportation. In the latest Luxury Brand Status Index survey from the Luxury Institute (http://www.luxuryinstitute.com/), Rolls Royce turned the tables on Maybach in 2006 to become the top-rated ultra-luxury automobile. Ultra-high net worth consumers rated Rolls Royce highest in consistently superior quality, uniqueness and exclusivity, and making the buyer feel special across the full customer experience. Social status is the only key metric in which Maybach outranked Rolls. There are significant gender differences, however, with women rating some brands much lower than did men. Overall, Rolls Royce was the brand that ultra-wealthy consumers would recommend to people they care about, followed by Bentley.

Brands rated (alphabetical order) are: Aston Martin, Bentley, BMW, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Maybach, Mercedes, Porsche, and Rolls Royce. A national sample of 500 wealthy consumers was surveyed online. Respondents must have a minimum gross annual household income of $200,000 and net worth (incl. equity in home) of $5,000,000. Survey results are weighted to match the demographic and net worth profile of the same audience according to the latest Survey of Consumer Finances from the Federal Reserve.

Ultra-high net worth consumer survey comments on Rolls Royce include:

-- "Historically, the Rolls is probably at, or near, the top of the luxury automobiles, making the statement that "I have arrived!"
-- "I feel the Rolls Royce is the most well built and prestigious vehicle in the world today."
-- "I have NEVER heard a complaint from the MANY owners I know. That is not true of ANY of the other brands."

"There is absolutely no better marketing tool for companies and consumers than objective and independent, empirical, peer-based reviews of luxury goods and services brands," said Milton Pedraza, CEO of the Luxury Institute. "In our best practices surveys, the wealthy tell us that what they want most is for luxury firms to 'Wow' them with the fundamentals of a great experience in areas such as problem resolution policies that favor the customer, allowing calling customers to speak to a person, and empowering front-line employees to make decisions that help serve their customers."

"Too many luxury firms are looking to 'Wow' the client with extraordinary, but fleeting, gimmicks. First and foremost, the wealthy want these firms to simply execute the fundamentals of each customer experience extraordinarily well. Consumers have spoken and Rolls Royce is the ultra-luxury brand they recommend to their peers most often. No amount of advertising or marketing can compete with the voice of the independent ratings of high net worth consumers," said Pedraza.

Oil jumps as crude supplies fall

Government reports 6 million barrel drop, prices race towards $75.

By Steve Hargreaves, CNNMoney.com staff writer July 12 2006: 10:37 AM EDT

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Oil prices rose Wednesday after the government said supplies of crude oil were far below estimates.

U.S. light crude for August delivery gained 64 cents to $74.80 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Crude was up 9 cents just prior to the report's release.

The Energy Information Administration, in its weekly stockpile report, said crude supplies fell by 6 million barrels. Analysts were looking for a 1.2 million barrel decline, according to Reuters.
Gasoline supplies fell by 400,000 barrels, while distillates, used to make heating and diesel fuel, rose by 2.6 million barrels. Analysts were looking for a 100,000 barrel drop in gasoline stocks and a 1.6 million barrel build in distillates.

Daimler Workers Oppose Reported Zetsche Outsourcing

FORBES, Chris Noon, LONDON ENGLAND- If there's one word that is anathema to unions, it's "outsourcing." Yet, according to a report in Monday's Stuttgarter Zeitung, that's just what DaimlerChrysler (nyse: DCX - news - people ) Chief Executive Dieter Zetsche wants to do with a significant portion of the automaker's accounting jobs.

The company's works council has predictably threatened to veto the plans: "The company is officially considering locations that include those in the Czech Republic and India for some of the company's accounting work," the head of the council, Erich Klemm, was quoted as saying. "We are saying without a balance of interest this simply won't fly," Klemm added.

The council--which claims that Zetsche's plans are part of the biggest restructuring program that there has ever been in the auto sector--argues that the automaker's strategy should not be based on sending work abroad.

DaimlerChrysler top brass, who plan to cut about 6,000 white collar positions worldwide, have apparently been chewing over a social and compensation plan for large-scale administrative restructuring for the last two months. Zetsche, who hopes to save around $1.8 billion per year, apparently wants to cull a fifth of the company's accounting, personnel and strategic planning staff worldwide.

SLR, and then some - Mercedes moving forward with more-powerful, 722 Edition McLaren SLR; no plans for U.S. sale

AutoWeek Published- Mercedes is moving forward with plans for a more-powerful McLaren SLR coupe ("Lighter, Stronger, Faster," May 8). No less than McLaren boss Ron Dennis and DaimlerChrysler chief Dieter Zetsche were scheduled to show the SLR 722 Edition to 50 potential buyers at the Paul Ricard circuit July 8-9.

"722" refers to the starting number of the 300 SLR driven to victory by Stirling Moss and Dennis Jenkinson in the 1955 Mille Miglia. The updated car, featuring a power boost to 650 hp (from 617 hp) and a $20,000 price boost to $472,750, goes on sale July 11 and makes it public debut at the Paris show this fall.

There are no plans to sell the car in the U.S. OFFICIAL RELEASE FROM MERCEDES-BENZBORN ON THE RACETRACK Stuttgart – The new Mercedes-Benz SLR "722 Edition" has all the attributes of a thoroughbred racing car. Refined in numerous respects, this super sports car has more output, a tailor-made suspension configuration and a decidedly sporty interior.A continuing tradition: the new model variant SLR "722 Edition" is a homage by Mercedes-Benz to the unforgettable victory won by the British racing legend Stirling Moss and his co-driver Dennis Jenkinson in a Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR with the starting number 722 (indicating a start time of 7.22 a.m.) at the Mille Miglia in 1955.

With an output of 478 kW/650 hp and a corresponding performance, the new super sports car, which goes on sale in Europe on July 11, will not only make the hearts of car enthusiasts beat faster. The supercharged 5.5-litre V8 engine in the "722 Edition", which is hand-built in the AMG engine shop in Affalterbach, generates 478 kW/650 hp.

The particular strengths of this high-performance engine are immediate response to movements of the accelerator, highly emphatic torque build-up and an unmistakable V8 sound. The performance figures are outstanding even for a high-end sports car: the "722 Edition" accelerates from standstill to 100 km/h in only 3.6 seconds, and 200 km/h is reached in just 10.2 seconds. The maximum speed (337 km/h) is above the 334 km/h previously achieved by the SLR. Handling characteristics worthy of the racetrack are also provided by the sophisticated suspension, with 19-inch light-alloy wheels, a stiffer damper configuration and a ten-millimetre-lower body.

Larger brake discs with a diameter of 390 mm ensure excellent braking performance.Discreet visual modifications mark the SLR "722 Edition" out as special, in line with the wishes of the enthusiastic gentleman drivers and wealthy sports car collectors who make up the core target group.

The modified front spoiler with an air splitter, as well as the rear diffuser, improve both the aerodynamics and contact pressure at high speeds, and reflect the transfer of cutting-edge technology from motor racing. At the same time, the use of clear-lacquered carbon as an extremely strong yet lightweight material symbolises the practicality of these technical features. Bucket-type sports seats upholstered in leather/Alcantara provide outstanding lateral support, while the grippier racing steering wheel with a hunting-leather lining, gearshift paddles and black carbon highlights lend a thoroughbred racing touch to the interior.

Exclusive "SLR. Club" for SLR ownersBefore the sales release date, customers and selected guests will have the advance opportunity to appraise the new SLR "722 Edition". This is to mark the foundation of the worldwide "SLR. Club" at the Circuit Paul Ricard in Le Castellet, southern France.

As an ultra-exclusive community of which SLR customers automatically become members, the "SLR Club" provides an attractive platform for outstanding events related to the SLR, as well as numerous other benefits. Another exciting feature is the club’s SLR Safety & Speed Academy, which offers special driver training courses and seminars. David Coulthard, Jochen Mass, Klaus Ludwig, Chris Goodwin and Christina Surer are among the highly skilled and well-known instructors.

Mercedes' new image emphasizes serviceSporty is downplayed, brand focus returns to value, comfort, safety

Jason Stein Automotive News Europe / REYKJAVIK, Iceland -- Mercedes-Benz is repositioning its brand image to emphasize customer service. The aim is to win back buyers discouraged by declining quality.

DaimlerChrysler and Mercedes boss Dieter Zetsche is pushing the new brand campaign, which Mercedes has labeled "Appreciation.

"The pillars of the new marketing strategy are service, comfort, value and safety. Mercedes is expected to launch the campaign globally later this summer. "The idea is that all Mercedes customers who buy our cars will feel appreciated," Markus Rubenbauer, head of product management for M-, R- and GL-class models, told Automotive News Europe during a press event here. "It's now important for us to re-emphasize values that have always been there.

"A Mercedes insider said Zetsche gave the automaker's marketing team the task of "sharpening the brand's image" a few months ago.The idea is to use traditional values to reconnect customers to the Mercedes brand. Sportiness is no longer the priority it was when Mercedes unveiled its E-class medium-premium car in 1995 under the campaign "See new eyes." "That was meant to show the new 'face' of Mercedes and was an important step in emphasizing that we could build reliable vehicles that were sporty," Rubenbauer said. But the new strategy "doesn't mean a 180-degree turnaround," Zetsche told Germany's Capital magazine recently.

"Now customer satisfaction is in the foreground, not just for the product but also for all of the services."In the last two years, technology problems have damaged Mercedes' reputation. After two major recalls of vehicles plagued by faulty electronics -- alternators, batteries and brake systems -- Zetsche wants Mercedes to be No. 1 in quality surveys.

Chasing Skoda
In a J.D. Power and Associates survey released last week, Mercedes ranked No. 11 out of 28 auto-makers in customer satisfaction in Germany -- behind Skoda and Daihatsu. In France, Mercedes fell two spots to No. 10 overall, just above the industry average. The surveys rate brands on the quality and reliability of their cars and the quality of their dealerships.

Mercedes dealers are also part of the "Appreciation" campaign. Within a month, dealers will get a training course to emphasize the importance of a one-on-one relationship."We need to service the customer the right way in day-to-day business," Rubenbauer said, "because that's the first contact with the customer."Mercedes executives will consider approving the campaign today (July 10), media reports say.

Jeep May Add Four Door Wrangler, Pickup to the Lineup

EDMUNDS, AUBURN HILLS, MICH — Look for the Jeep portfolio to expand over the next two years. Industry sources tell Inside Line the redesigned Wrangler will add a new four-door variant, and could spawn a four-door pickup, similar to the Gladiator concept displayed in January at the Detroit show.

The next-generation Wrangler two-door will shift from the current TJ platform to the updated TK platform. It is slated to begin production in Toledo in summer 2006 and will reach the market as a 2007 model. The long-wheelbase Wrangler four-door, built on a stretched TKL platform, will be considerably wider and longer than today's Wrangler, with exterior styling said to resemble that of the Gladiator concept truck.

Insiders say both Laredo and Rubicon trim levels will be offered. The next-generation Wrangler will move upscale, with improved safety features and more content.

Engine choices will include a 2.4-liter four-cylinder and a 3.7-liter V6. Rumored for the four-door Wrangler only is an optional 5.7-liter Hemi V8. Jeep reportedly will offer buyers a choice of five-speed automatic and six-speed manual transmissions.

A Gladiator-style Jeep pickup reportedly has not yet been approved for production, but Chrysler is said to be considering a 2008 launch.

What this means to you: If you like the idea of driving a Jeep but can't stand the inconvenience of two doors, the new 2007 Wrangler lineup may have something more to your liking.

Big stakes in Two-Mode hybrid projectBMW, D/C and GM collaborate on transmission for SUVs

Richard Truett Automotive News /
DETROIT -- Six miles north of Detroit in a quiet industrial park near a sprawling shopping mall, General Motors, DaimlerChrysler and BMW engineers are going to school to learn about Toyota's fleet of gasoline-electric hybrids.US and German flags snap in the breeze over the automakers' Hybrid Development Center, a brown brick building the length of a city block divided into four sections. Each automaker has a section. There's also a "cooperation area" where German and US engineers work side-by-side on a new Two-Mode hybrid transmission for pickup trucks, SUVs and luxury cars.Rivalries don't matter here. It is a leave-your-egos-at-the-door team effort, say Larry Nitz, of GM, Andreas Truckenbrodt, of D/C, and Wolfgang Epple, of BMW, the executives in charge of the historic project. The project could have strategic implications because:

  • The Two-Mode will boost fuel economy of big SUVs and large luxury cars by at least 25 percent
  • Having a fuel efficient full-sized SUV could give GM and Dodge a major competitive advantage over Ford Motor and import brands
  • It could help GM sell more of its most profitable vehicles
  • It would boost the engineering reputations of all three companies

Hybrids offer Europeans an alternative if diesel technology doesn't take off in the US as expected.Protecting profitsA successful project could protect GM's most profitable vehicles in North America -- big SUVs.Some analysts estimate that GM makes between $10,000 and $15,000 (about E7,900 to E11,800) profit on a fully loaded SUV such as the Cadillac Escalade.

In 2005, US sales of large SUVs of all brands totaled 831,017. GM owned 60.7 percent of that market with sales of 504,343 vehicles. But sustained $3-a-gallon (62 euro cents a liter) fuel prices are changing US consumer buying habits. In May, US sales of SUVs, vans and other light trucks plunged 15 percent at the Chrysler group, 14 percent at GM and 7 percent at Ford.

Through May, sales of all light trucks were down 6.2 percent. In a 2,400-person survey by US magazine Consumer Reports last month, 37 percent are considering trading in their SUVs and big cars for a more fuel-efficient vehicle because of high gasoline prices. Half are considering a hybrid vehicle.

The Two-Mode transmission starts production in about 15 months. GM will introduce it on the Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade SUVs. Dodge plans to launch a Durango SUV with the Two-Mode for the 2008 model year.

Mercedes-Benz and BMW have not said which vehicles will get the transmission or when it will debut. But it could end up in their big luxury cars to compete with the Lexus GS 450h sedan. And one or both German automakers could use the Two-Mode with a diesel engine and try to leap ahead of Toyota with a super fuel-efficient luxury vehicle.

If the transmission works as promised, the 25 percent gain in fuel economy would let GM SUVs, such as the 2,720kg Chevrolet Tahoe, get about 26 miles per gallon (9 liters per 100km) in combined city/highway driving. That would likely be enough to keep GM ahead of any US-government-imposed increases in corporate average fuel economy. What's the difference? In a hybrid such as the Toyota Prius or Ford Escape Hybrid, the driver doesn't feel the electric motor cut in and out during acceleration, only an ultra-smooth, quiet rush of blended power going to the wheels.

The real engineering magic of a full hybrid powertrain that can propel a vehicle using gasoline or electricity or both is in the control system and its software, said Tom Watson, Ford manager of hybrid powertrains. In a hybrid, a powerful computer manages the blending of power from the electric motors and gasoline engine. It also controls the hybrid's regenerative braking system that captures the vehicle's kinetic energy and turns it into electricity. But the Prius, Escape Hybrid and several Honda hybrids have drawbacks. They can't tow heavy loads. And sustained uphill driving will eventually discharge the batteries enough to turn off the electric motor assist, which reduces performance and boosts fuel consumption. Those are problems the Two-Mode system has been designed to solve. The parking lot outside the Hybrid Development Center looks like a science experiment. It's filled with eviscerated hybrids of all kinds. GM, BMW and D/C engineers are benchmarking the performance of numerous competitors' hybrid vehicles.

They dissected the mechanical and electrical systems to understand why they work so well. Japanese-market right-hand-drive versions of the big Toyota Crown mild hybrid sedan and Estima all-wheel-drive minivan are parked near a partially dismembered Prius. A heavy black electrical cable dangles below the Crown.

In addition to the hybrid Toyotas, there's a Chevrolet S-10 electric pickup from the mid-1990s, one of GM's diesel-electric city buses, and a Citroen C3 with a diesel engine and a stop-start system. There also is a Ford Escape Hybrid minus its powertrain.

The Two-Mode transmission is not a copy of a Toyota transmission, nor does it use Toyota technology. The basic design and layout of the Two-Mode is derived from GM's diesel-electric hybrid city buses developed in the mid-1990s.

GM's Nitz said the Two-Mode is alone among hybrid transmissions. It can tow heavy loads such as boats and horse trailers. And the way it shifts gears is different. When the transmission changes gears, the engine speed stays the same.

How the power is sent to the wheels, through a series of clutches and planetary gears, is another way the Two-Mode is better than existing hybrid transmissions, Nitz said. In a conventional hybrid transmission, power is sent to the wheels through one or two paths: electrically through the motors or mechanically through the internal combustion engine. The electric path is less efficient, said Nitz.

"We get 100 percent of the engine power to the [wheels] through a mechanical path," he said. "We can boost power output electrically, or we can do regenerative braking off the electric motors, but they are not in the power path." That's a big gain, Nitz said."

It enables full-displacement engines with reasonably sized motors. It enables great towing and higher performance," he said.A key aspect of the Two-Mode system is the powertrain's controller and the software in it -- the brains of the system. It keeps the engine running in what engineers call a "sweet spot" in the rpm range.

If more power is needed, say to propel the vehicle up a steep grade, the controller will keep engine speed steady but use the electric motors in the transmission for the extra power, said Steve Poulos, GM's hybrid powertrain chief engineer. "The whole goal is to always get your engine parked near that point," he said.

The Two-Mode transmission alone doesn't provide the entire fuel economy gain, Poulos said. Some comes from a cylinder cutoff system that turns off half the V-8 engine at highway speeds, a stop-start system that turns off the engine at stoplights, and improved aerodynamics.

Competitive advantage? When the Two-Mode debuts in the autumn, GM's main rival in the full-sized SUV segment, Ford, will not have a similar transmission or a full-sized hybrid SUV. Neither will any import brand. But less competition doesn't guarantee sales success, said Phil Gott, an analyst at Global Insight's US office in Lexington, Massa-chusetts. Gott believes that, much like with the Prius and Honda hybrids, most drivers will get much less than the US Environmental Protection Agency-rated fuel economy in SUVs with the Two-Mode transmission.

"Very few automotive sales are made because of a transmission," Gott said. "The real question is: What is the impact of hybridization on the marketability of an SUV?"So far, hybrid SUV sales have been poor. Toyota is having a tough time selling Highlander Hybrids and Ford has needed big incentives and a major marketing campaign to ignite sales of the Escape Hybrid. This project gives GM the chance to re-establish its reputation for engineering excellence, which it lost in the 1970s and 1980s because of disasters with diesel engines and other failed technologies.

Said Gott: "Offering hybrids will help assure in peoples' minds that GM is a current technology company. It will help bring people into the showroom. It will help give people confidence in the company, and it will help GM sell vehicles overall, even though most of them won't be hybrids."BMW and D/C won't talk about their plans for the Two-Mode.

Epple, the BMW hybrid chief, said his company joined the partnership because BMW was impressed with the Two-Mode's potential and because it could get a version of the transmission faster and cheaper than if it had developed or bought a similar transmission from a supplier. Truckenbrodt, D/C hybrid chief, agrees: "We are really building on a very good solution already. But it improves so much by adding the experience and the lessons learned and the competency from those various engineers."

The Two-Mode transmission also could be a way for German automakers to hedge their bets. If their plans for diesels in North America don't succeed, they will have the Two-Mode transmission to give them high fuel economy.

"Hybrids are one alternative to improve fuel economy," Epple said. "Nobody knows what is going to happen to diesel in the US. The memory of the customer lasts a long time." People don't forget," he said, noting the lingering bad reputation of diesels from the 1970s and 1980s.

None of the automakers would discuss the financial aspects of the Two-Mode. But it is unlikely to be sold for a profit, at least initially. Nitz said GM hybrids will debut with nickel-metal hydride batteries. Not until lithium-ion batteries are available late this decade can automakers take significant costs out of hybrids, said Ford's Watson.Said Epple: "The thinking and pride of engineers is once you produce something and have something on the drawing board -- ideas then arise as to how it can be improved, modified and the costs can be reduced."
