Chrysler Group CEO Tom LaSorda presented the broad outlines of a plan to restructure the Auburn Hills automaker to DaimlerChrysler AG's management board Wednesday in Stuttgart, Germany, according to company sources.

DaimlerChrysler is scheduled to announce the plan -- which some analysts view as its final attempt to fix Chrysler -- in mid-February. The plan is likely to be put to DaimlerChrysler's governing supervisory board on Feb. 13 for approval and could be announced that day or on Feb. 14 during DaimlerChrysler's annual results conference. The news conference will be held at Chrysler's headquarters in Auburn Hills for the first time since the 1998 merger.

DaimlerChrysler spokesman Jason Vines declined to discuss details of the plan. But people involved say it's likely to include job cuts and the closure of at least two U.S. factories, including an under-utilized assembly plant in Newark, which makes sport-utility vehicles.

The closures will be part of Chrysler's strategy to reduce production to match demand. In addition, Chrysler is expected discuss a revamped future product plan that includes more small, fuel efficient vehicles. Overall, Chrysler has seven teams working on various aspects on the plan designed to cut costs by $1,000 per vehicle.

Chrysler underwent a restructuring at the start of the decade under Dieter Zetsche, now CEO of DaimlerChrysler. But it still appears to have too much production capacity in the United States, where Zetsche did not shutter any assembly plants during his four-year plan.

Chrysler sank into the red in the third quarter, losing $1.5 billion, as demand for its vehicles dropped and inventories surged.

Two-thirds of the vehicles that Chrysler sells are minivans, pickups, and SUVs -- vehicles in categories that have been hurt by the recent volatility in gas prices.

This month, Chrysler's top sales executive chief Joe Eberhardt stepped down as dealers increasingly resisted the company's efforts to get them to take more vehicles than they could sell.

But his departure does not reduce the pressure on Chrysler's senior management to deliver a plan to stop the losses. Zetsche said he expected the plan to be drafted before the end of the year and made public in early 2007.

"Investors are looking for cost initiatives -- reductions in personnel and cuts in capacity, as the other two are doing," Frankfurt-based auto analyst Juergen Pieper said, referring to restructuring programs under way at General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co.

"Longer term, investors will be looking for action on the product side," said Pieper, an analyst at Metzler Bank.

"My assumption is they're going to cut production out," said Dan Frost, owner of a Chrysler-Jeep dealership in Southfield. "They have to lower production just to get everything sorted out."

DaimlerChrysler has come under renewed pressure from German investors to ditch Chrysler, just as rival BMW AG unloaded its loss-making British subsidiary Rover in 2000.

A former manager at Mercedes-Benz, whose own recovery is on track, said executives in Germany feel confounded by the U.S. division's problems. "People don't know what to do any more."

The frustrations felt in Germany mounted in September when the United Auto Workers President Ron Gettelfinger said the union had no intention of offering Chrysler the same concessions on health-care coverage that it gave GM and Ford. Gettelfinger, who sits on DaimlerChrysler's supervisory board, has softened his position and negotiations have started.

DaimlerChrysler has retained longtime consultants McKinsey & Co. to help Chrysler's management with the turnaround plan.

A few Mercedes executives are also contributing to the effort. Its own recovery plan was drafted with the help of McKinsey consultants. The luxury carmaker was struggling to contain the damage to its reputation and bottom line caused by deterioration in its vehicle quality.

McKinsey's chief contribution in past turnaround plans at DaimlerChrysler has been to organize the process and track the implementation.

Rumors continue to circulate that Zetsche might bring back Wolfgang Bernhard, his former deputy at Chrysler. But sources close to the situation strongly downplay that likelihood.

German media speculate Bernhard may seek to leave his current position at Volkswagen AG following the resignation of VW CEO Bernd Pischetsrieder.

In a sign German carmakers are getting more serious about hybrid vehicles, Siemens VDO Automotive has signed an agreement to acquire Ballard Power Systems' electric drive business in a deal valued at $4 million.

Klaus Egger, Siemens VDO Group vice president, said the acquisition of Ballard's electric drive unit will enhance Siemens VDO's effort to secure a place in the hybrid market. Siemens VDO, one of the world's largest automotive suppliers, has close ties to German automakers such as BMW and DaimlerChrysler, and is preparing to unveil its own hybrid system soon, company officials said Thursday after the Ballard deal was announced.

German companies have been critical of hybrid technology in the past because they believed it was too cumbersome but Toyota's success with hybrid technology has prompted them to re-examine their old assumptions, one Siemens VDO executive said recently.

John Sheridan, Ballard president and chief executive officer, said the company decided to sell off the electric-drive business after a strategic review of its operations. The sale will allow Vancouver-based Ballard to focus on its fuel-cell business and improve the company's overall financial position, Sheridan added.

Pending final approvals, the acquisition is projected to be completed in early 2007 and will include Ballard Power Systems Corp.'s research, development and manufacturing operation in Dearborn, impacting approximately 80 highly specialized personnel, representatives of both companies said.

In a good overview of diesel's strengths and weaknesses, Transportation News points out that higher emissions continue to be diesel engine's Achilles heal. The stringent California emissions laws, enforced in California, Massachusetts, Maine, New York and Vermont, are such that no current diesel passenger vehicle is available for sale in all 50 states. Thankfully though new designs and technology designed to allow diesel passenger vehicles to meet the 2007 Tier 2 Bin 5 emissions standards will soon debut and should even up the playing field in the U.S. to a degree versus petrol vehicles although cost will still be an issue.

Better fuel economy, longevity and power are all ticked off as benefits of diesel engines but emissions, especially NOx, require advanced features like urea neutralisation systems and particulate filters to keep the air clean. As AutoblogGreen readers probably know, the Mercedes E320 BlueTec is one of the first cabs off the rank with a Tier 2 Bin 5 emissions compliant urea-based additive system designed to reduce NOx emissions by more than eight times compared to the outgoing 2006 E320 CDI.

As well as leading the diesel bandwagon, DaimlerChrysler also has identified a global trend towards smaller cars with less powerful engines which may see it bring compact models to the U.S. in the future. Currently Mercedes-Benz sells only large cars and SUVs in the American market, in part to preserve the prestige badge, but also for financial reasons partially to do with the weak dollar. If trends continue however, Mercedes may look at bringing its A-Class and B-Class models to the U.S.

You may have noticed some new labels on the diesel pumps at filling stations. Ultra Low sulphur diesel fuel is required for diesel vehicles produced after January 1, 2007 and this Ultra Low sulphur diesel has now made it though the supply system and is available at the pumps. Ultra Low sulphur diesel has less than 15 parts per million (ppm) sulphur content, compared to the maximum 500 ppm sulphur in regular low sulphur diesel fuel. Why do we need it? - to reduce the particulates in diesel engine exhaust.

When you hear about diesel particulates, you probably think about the black smoke you see shooting out the exhaust pipe as a diesel vehicle pulls away from a stop. Yes, those are particulates but much of what we see is large soot particulates that quickly fall to the ground. Most of the large particulates have been eliminated by the improvements in diesel fuel injection systems, but ultra fine particles (less than .1 micron in diameter) make up about 80-95% of diesel exhaust soot and that is what the new diesel emission systems are designed to control. The sulphur in diesel fuel doesn't create the particulates. Instead, ultra low sulphur fuel is needed to prevent damaging the exhaust converters and particulate filters that will prevent the particulates from entering the atmosphere.

Cars and trucks each have their own standards for emissions. For 2007 passenger cars, currently the only vehicle to meet their standards is the Mercedes-Benz E320 Bluetec sedan. Jeep will also use the engine and emissions equipment from this sedan to produce a diesel model for 2007. Diesel equipped pickup trucks, vans and commercial trucks also require new emissions equipment to meet the standards. Since 2004, these vehicles have required a catalytic converter to reduce emissions. Now they will have an oxidizing converter and a particulate trap in the exhaust system.

A particulate trap does exactly what its name suggests: it traps particulates. A fine honeycomb silicon carbide material captures the particulates in cells to prevent their release into the atmosphere. Half the cells are blocked at one end so the exhaust gases are forced into the open cells and through the porous cell walls. Particulates are trapped in the cells and the exhaust gases flow out the end of the other half of the cells to the tailpipe. In simple terms, the particulate trap is just a very sophisticated filter. The cell material is coated in precious metals such as Platinum and Pallidium to help burn the particulates when the particulate trap needs to be regenerated.

Over time, the cells in the particulate trap become loaded up and exhaust gas flow through the trap is restricted. Temperature and pressure sensors on the exhaust system monitor the efficiency of the trap. When the engine computer determines that the trap needs to be cleaned, it will operate the engine to burn off the carbon particles in the trap. That's when things start to heat up.

To clean out the particulate trap, internal temperatures must climb above 500 C. this is much hotter than normal exhaust, so a Diesel Oxidation Converter (DOC) mounted in the exhaust system in front of the particulate trap provides much of the heat. The computer will modify fuel delivery, injection timing, turbocharger operation and even throttle position (yes, some systems will use an electronic throttle specifically for cleaning the particulate trap) to create heat in the Diesel Oxidation Converter. The exhaust gases are heated by the catalytic operation of the DOC and then flow into the particulate trap where the catalytic operation of the trap burns out the soot. This can take several minutes to accomplish, and will typically be done while the vehicle is driving down the highway.

Using fuel with too much sulphur will poison the Diesel Oxidation Converter. The sulphur causes phosphorus in the exhaust to form deposits on the catalyst so that it doesn't work. The system can't generate enough heat to clean out the particulate trap, so you will need to replace expensive exhaust system components for the system to work again.

Ash from engine oils is another contaminant. Ash cannot be burned out of the particulate trap and eventually it will become plugged. Low ash engine oil meeting American Petroleum Institute (API) rating CJ-4 standard must be used to prevent plugging the particulate trap permanently. API CJ-4 engine oil has been on the market since 2002 so this shouldn't be much of a problem as long as the correct oil is used.

Diesel emissions controls have been phased in since 2004. January 1,2007 is just another step in the timeline to reduce harmful emissions, but it is one that will add new components to diesel vehicles and modify the way they sometimes operate.

Brakes spur recall

MODBEE.COM - - DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Group said Friday it was recalling more than 60,000 vehicles to reprogram a brake system computer to avoid the loss of antilock brakes and traction control. The recall involves 62,369 model year 2007:

WASHINGTON, Dec. 21 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Mercedes-Benz USA and its parent corporation, DaimlerChrysler AG (Mercedes), have agreed to pay $1.2 million in civil penalties to resolve allegations that they violated the Clean Air Act by failing to promptly notify the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) about defects in the air pollution controls installed on numerous 1998 to 2006 Mercedes model vehicles, the Justice Department and the EPA announced today.The Clean Air Act requires auto manufacturers to promptly inform the EPA of defects in emission-related components so that the government can consider whether the defect will cause emission standards to be exceeded and whether a recall is necessary. Both the complaint and the settlement were filed in the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C.

In response to the EPA's investigation into the matter, Mercedes began voluntary recalls for two of the defects at issue and notified owners that it would extend the warranty coverage to address a third defect, at an estimated cost of about $59 million. Under the terms of the consent decree, Mercedes will also be required to improve its emissions defect investigation and reporting system to ensure future compliance, at an estimated cost of approximately $1 million per year."Reliable and effective automobile pollution control systems are essential to protect human health and the environment from harmful automobile emissions," said Sue Ellen Wooldridge, Assistant Attorney General for the Justice Department's Environment and Natural Resources Division.

Dodge Avenger R/T Spied On Michigan Freeway

Before its NAIAS debut in January, Dodge hasn’t been shy about leaving its Dodge Avenger R/T out in the open. We caught this silver, unmasked sedan yesterday on I-275 North in Novi.

With all the hoopla over spy shots and leaked photos as of late, one might even assume that the company is doing it on purpose. We wouldn’t put such double-black secret ops gamesmanship against DCX PR bossman Jason Vines and his crew.

We’ll have more details and specs on the car when its embargo breaks before the auto show.

2008 Jeep Liberty "UNMASKED"

ALLPAR.COM - - For 2008, the Liberty is moving to a “baby Commander” look, gaining some length and mainly getting the squared-off, Land Rover/Hummer look. The headlights and turn signals are, as with the Commander, separate units behind a rectangular plastic housing. The glass has been trimmed, and it appears that the roof has been lowered; seats seem to be the more comfortable yet thinner new design from the Compass; and the fancy new stereos/nav systems should be available. The cargo area has been expanded. It appears that only the 3.7 liter V6 will be available, and that the four speed automatic will carry forward, so the four cylinder and stick-shift may have been dropped; a diesel is expected to return for late availability. We’re not sure, but the 4-liter V6 may replace the 3.7 or be available as an option. We don’t think the six-speed automatic used on the Pacifica would show up on the Liberty. (The 3.8 engine used on the new Wrangler is also possible.) Any of these engines would last until 2010-2012, when the Phoenix series will replace them.

Overall, the Liberty will incorporate a number of changes and improvements engineered into the Dodge Nitro, while increasing its off-road worthiness. Expected features including an Electronic Stability Program with Electronic Roll Mitigation, hill descent control, the Load ’n Go rear cargo slide out system (also seen in the Nitro), rear DVD video, and remote start installed at the factory.

We caught the 2008 Jeep Liberty in an unintentional state of undress, revealing the revamped Jeep without camouflage for the very first time. We spotted our first Liberty prototype about one month ago, but it had some fairly thorough disguising covering the front fascia, its front and rear fenders,and its D-pillar. With its camo in place, the Liberty prototype looked a lot like its Dodge Nitro platform-mate, but in this undisguised state, it's clear that the next Liberty's Jeep DNA will show through loud and clear.

We can now see that the Liberty's fender are aggressively flared and appropriately angular (unlike the smoothly rounded wheel arches on the Nitro), in order to look at home alongside its rugged brothers (Wrangler, Commander, etc.). The '08 Liberty's headlights, and front and rear bumpers are very squared-off and chiseled (much like the Commander, though edgier), and the overall look is much more masculine than the softer-edged lines of the current model.

The above comparison was made much easier since a supplier conveniently parked this undisguised prototype nose-to-tail with a current Liberty. The comparative profiles also reveal the new Liberty's upsized stature, both in wheelbase and overall length, benefiting passengers and cargo capacity alike. The extra space has also enabled the next Liberty's undercarriage to be repackaged to make room for a spare tire placed beneath the rear bumper, instead of perched on the tailgate, as it is on the current model. The change allows the '08 model to have a conventional hatchback design instead of the left-hinged, swing-out tailgate that graces today's Liberty.

Brenda Priddy added: The photos above were shot at street level and may have overlooked one of the most interesting features that will be offered on the new Liberty: A huge retractable fabric roof!

When we first started inquiring about the upcoming Liberty, our sources seemed to switch subjects and asked us if we saw the ASC Cosmos Hummer H3 that was shown at the 2006 NAIAS. With that in mind, our focus on a camouflaged Liberty was from above, paying special attention to the roof. And sure enough, the roof had unique camouflage covering what apparently is Jeep’s biggest secret: a fabric roof system, which will put the Liberty in a class of its own.

Although we can’t confirm the designer and supplier of the retractable roof, there is good indication that ASC is involved in the development.

The new Liberty, internally know by the code name KK, will start down the production line in July of 2007. There will be two V6 offerings:

a 3.7-liter as the base engine, and an optional 4.0-liter powerplant, with a new diesel engine available in late in the 2008 model year, or possibly for 2009. The 2008 Liberty will also have the Load N' Go sliding cargo system that debuted in the Dodge Nitro. Also expected are such features as stability control and hill decent assist.

Another major change is the spare tire moving from the tailgate to under the vehicle. It will still have a 2 piece tailgate however, with the glass being able to lift up independently from the gate. And, although we couldn’t get a picture, we saw that the tailgate also lifts up now, instead of to the side.

And although some may think of the new Liberty as Jeep’s version of the Nitro (or vice-versa), the Liberty will prove to be more off-roadcapable than the Nitro, giving it rights to the Jeep nameplate.

Upadate 2: Freightliner plans Mexico factory despite layoffs elsewhere

Bloomberg News | AUBURN HILLS - - DaimlerChrysler's Portland-based Freightliner unit will build a $300 million truck plant in Mexico to meet a surge in long-term demand even as it prepares for as many as 4,000 North America layoffs next year.

The site is in Saltillo, Coahuila, Freightliner said today in a statement. It will be the second Mexico factory for Freightliner, the world's largest truckmaker.

Freightliner is counting on sales to rise after 2007. For next year, company chief Andreas Renschler expects North American truck output may fall 39 percent because 2006 purchases jumped before new U.S. emissions rules boost prices on Jan. 1.

"This news comes as a surprise after their talk about layoffs," said Stephen Pope, a Cantor Fitzgerald analyst in London. "There has to be a major cost advantage or incentive for this plant to get the go-ahead after the layoff. Freightliner may also be easing out of one relatively high-cost area in North America in favor of a lower-cost one."

Freightliner spokeswoman Amy Sills couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

Renschler said last week 800 employees at a St. Thomas, Ontario, plant already had been told they'll be laid off starting in March. The commercial-vehicles unit has about 25,328 employees at 11 plants in North America. Laid-off workers are eligible for recall.

Groundbreaking for the northern Mexico plant will occur in the second quarter of 2007, and production will begin in 2009, Freightliner said. The factory will be able to produce as many as 30,000 trucks annually and employ 1,600 people.

The site is near a Chrysler automotive plant that produces the half-ton and three-quarter-ton Dodge Ram pickups. Chrysler also operates an engine and stamping plant in Saltillo.

U.S. medium- and heavy-duty truck sales rose 8.6 percent through October to 480,608 vehicles, according to Automotive News. Freightliner was the biggest seller, at 103,658.

Detroit Auto Show: 2008 Smart ForTwo gets NA debut in Detroit

The first generation Smart ForTwo has popped up at the Detroit Auto Show several times over the years, mostly on the stands of various parts companies and tuners. However, no Smart has ever been officially available for sale from the manufacturer in the United States. That's all going to change this January though. The recently announced second generation ForTwo will be available in the US market, but not for another year. DaimlerChrysler will have a special stand for Smart opposite the Chrysler and Dodge displays in Cobo Hall next month although the cars on display will be Euro-spec models. The US spec versions will apparently be shown later in the year.

North American International Auto Show in Detroit: Premiere of the new smart fortwo in the USA

For the very first time on US soil: the new smart fortwo, celebrating its USA premiere at this year's North American International Auto Show in Detroit (January 7 to 21, 2007). The new smart fortwo will be available in the USA beginning in the first quarter of 2008. The car shown in Detroit is an European version of the new smart fortwo. Model lines to be available in the United States will be announced at later date.

smart, like Mercedes-Benz and Maybach, is part of the Mercedes Car Group. The exhibition stand is directly opposite Chrysler and Dodge in Oakland Hall (inside Cobo Center). Written in large letters on the stand are the words "Coming to the USA in 2008". And right in front of it, a smart fortwo with red bodypanels and a silver tridion safety cell.

The new smart fortwo can do everything that the current model can do - but better. This means that the new smart fortwo is even more comfortable, even more agile, even safer and even more environmentally friendly than its predecessor. And from the first draft it is designed to meet USA customer needs and registration standards.

The right car at the right time

It is time for the smart fortwo to make an appearance in the USA; fuel prices are rising, and city traffic is increasing by the day. In short, the smart fortwo is the right car at the right time.

On the other side of the Atlantic, the two-seater quickly became a popular vehicle following its launch in October 1998. The same is sure to hold true in the USA.

More than 770,000 customers have chosen the first generation of the smart fortwo – often to replace a larger car with the lively two-seater. Because the smart fortwo is something special and stands out from the crowd, and because it is simply fun to drive.

Apart from this, the vehicle concept is also highly practical – especially for people who live in cities or urban areas.
