DaimlerChrysler Smart Unit Focuses On Fortwo Model

Dow Jones

PARIS -(Dow Jones)- DaimlerChrysler AG's (DCX) Smart minicar unit said Thursday it expects to be successful with its plan to focus solely on the two- seater, Fortwo model.

"We are looking to the future with so much optimism," Smart President Ulrich Walker told reporters at the Paris Motor Show.

He noted that the current Smart Fortwo model was "an economic success". "We earned money with every vehicle we sold," Walker said. Smart will launch a revamped version of the Fortwo later this year.

DaimlerChrysler in March decided to cease production of Smart's four-seater model, named Forfour, and focus solely on the tiny two-seater model.

Following a wide-ranging restructuring program at the division, DaimlerChrysler aims to reach break-even at Smart next year, eight years after the brand's market launch in October 1998.

DaimlerChrysler in June had confirmed plans to launch the ultra-compact car in the U.S. at the beginning of 2008, in cooperation with retailer United Auto Group Inc. (UAG).
