Corporate Cousins - Dodge will share platform with new PT Cruiser

Bradford Wernle | Automotive News | | Automotive News / October 18, 2006 - 6:00 am The Chrysler group is forging ahead on a replacement for the PT Cruiser and a Dodge crossover on the same platform, say analysts and suppliers.

The Dodge version, code-named JC49, is due first, possibly as early as 2008, says John Wolkonowicz, a forecaster for Global Insight Automotive in Lexington, Mass. He calls the Dodge a "sport tourer."

The PT Cruiser's replacement, code-named JZ49, will appear in 2010, he says. The sheet metal will be quite different from the current PT, with the retro elements toned down.

One supplier source said the name "PV Cruiser" has been discussed. Wolkonowicz said the positioning will be slightly different from the Dodge. He predicts it will be an "entry CUV."

Says one source: "They got themselves into a box doing the second-generation PT Cruiser. The PT was supposed to be done at the same time they did Caliber. But it was taking a tremendous amount of energy to figure out how to handle it."

Chrysler isn't commenting.

Detroit's Oversupply Problem

U.S. automakers are seeing unsold inventory grow and even deep discounts aren't enough to stimulate sales

BUSINESS WEEK | Matt Vella - - It's Economics 101. When there's more supply than demand, the supplier is in trouble.

That's the situation at DaimlerChrysler's (DCX) Chrysler division. People aren't buying their cars. Their dealers—including some of the country's biggest retailers, Group 1 Automotive (GPI) and AutoNation (AN), which combined own nearly 500 dealerships across the country—have stopped taking orders because of lack of demand.

In fact, Chrysler—which comprises Dodge and Jeep but not German luxury carmakers Mercedes-Benz or Maybach—found itself with an inventory of 533,200 cars and trucks hanging around its neck as of Oct. 1, according to Automotive News. Nearly 50% of those are Dodge vehicles, while Jeep and Chrysler brand units make up about 24% and 25%, respectively.

Chrysler chief Tom LaSorda and his top marketing executive, Joe Eberhardt, hope to convince dealers to increase orders, relieving some of the pressure from mounting unsold inventory. But their pleas are likely to be ignored, despite new, additional sales incentives of up to $1,500 for vehicles that have idled on lots for more than six months.

COMMON PROBLEM.

The models in excess supply track closely with the company's sales, which are down overall. Car sales declined 1.5% for the first nine months of the year, and trucks have tumbled 12.3%. In accordance with those figures, Chrysler is saddled with 123,900 of its once-popular Dodge Ram pickups, as well as 37,500 Caravan minivans. Three of Jeep's highest profile models—the Grand Cherokee, Liberty, and new Commander—all have inventories exceeding 30,000 vehicles each.

But Chrysler's not alone. Unsold inventories burden its cross-town rivals as well. Excluding its struggling Premier Automotive Group—which comprises Jaguar, Land Rover, Aston Martin, and Volvo—the unsold inventory of Ford's (F) combined Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury divisions add up to 643,000 units. Similarly, General Motors (GM) has nearly 1 million vehicles on hand from its American brands: Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Hummer, Pontiac, and Saturn.

To gain a measure of how much those inventories are a drag on business, given the size and market share differences between the Detroit Three, analysts look at how many days' supply of vehicles each automaker has in the showrooms. The more inventory, the lower the sales.

JAPANESE ADVANTAGE.

Along those lines, Chrysler is, by far, in the worst shape of the three. The company currently has a 101-day supply of vehicles, according to Edmunds.com. That's far above the figure industry analysts commonly cite as a desirable minimum. A "healthy days' supply" is generally considered to be 60 days. Chrysler's cars are sitting around on dealer lots about 15% longer than those of its American competitors. Ford has an 84-day supply and GM an 88-day supply.

In contrast, the popular Honda Accord has the nation's lowest inventory, with only a 50-day supply.

Though Ford and GM appear better off, especially having won concessions from creditors and unions to allow them to reduce production, their supply still seems bloated in comparison to foreign rivals. Toyota (TM) and Honda (HMC) both maintain overall supply numbers that are nearly half as long, between 30 and 40 days. Moreover, should demand fall significantly, Ford and GM could find themselves with excessive supply as well.

Ford, for example, has the largest inventory of trucks in the country, with 239,100 of its best-selling F-Series sitting unsold on dealers' lots. Currently, that represents an 88-day supply, down from the same time last year of 93. But as competition heats up in the truck market, that number could go up quickly. In September, 2001, there were 206,500 F-Series on hand, which represented 66 days' supply.

PAGING DR. Z.

For Chrysler, it's the highest inventory number for the company in the past five years, and a nearly 17% jump from the same time last year. "Frankly, anything beyond 90 days is unacceptable," says Alex Rosen, industry analyst with Edmunds.com. "Ford and GM have been much more aggressive, Chrysler's sort of fallen asleep at the wheel," he adds.

The fault lies with Chrysler, which unlike Ford and GM, refused to cut back production. Stung by higher gas prices and several aging models, it found that even a repeat of last summer's successful employee pricing sales scheme, which attracted many eager buyers but shrunk already razor-thin profit margins, fizzled. Even last year, Chrysler didn't fare as well as GM, which shrunk supply to 65 days. This time around Ford and GM both held fast, swallowing losses while Chrysler's poorly received "Ask Dr. Z" advertising campaign fell flat on its face.

By July, Chrysler's market share dipped to 10.1%, the lowest it has been in half a decade. Then, in September, the company announced it was doubling its estimated loss for the quarter to a whopping $1.5 billion.

According to industry observers, the inventory glut is confirmation of stubborn adherence to old patterns. "The mentality out of Detroit has always been that you have to keep the factories running," explains Wes Brown, a partner at Los Angeles–based automotive-research firm Iceology. "Build it, let the dealers sell it."

CAR SHORTAGE.

Chrysler has yet to strike deals with the United Autoworkers Union, similar to the ones announced by Ford and GM. While costly, those agreements have allowed the companies to trim inventories, thereby reducing pressure to discount older models as new ones hit dealer showrooms.

Chrysler's product portfolio is also cause for concern, as consumers continue to turn away from large gas-guzzling SUVs: The company doesn't have enough cars in its portfolio. Though its new Dodge Charger and Caliber models are selling very well, and a revamped Chrysler Sebring is waiting in the wings, a mere 21% of the company's sales are cars and 79% trucks, SUVs, and minivans. Ford and GM's portfolios are more evenly distributed, 42% and 44%, respectively. The industry-wide average is 50.1% cars to 49.9% trucks and SUVs.

Chrysler also appears to be having difficulty capitalizing on a series of smash hits, including the Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, and Caliber, all three of which have sold aggressively since their introductions. "The bottom line is that it has difficulty transferring the formulas that hit to the rest of its product lines in a timely fashion," says Brown.

Jeep: 2007 brings three new products

Don Hammonds | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - -The 2007 sales year promises to be a busy one for Jeep as the company welcomes several new products into the fold -- the Compass, the Patriot and the Wrangler Unlimited.

Of the three, the Compass is the one aimed at bringing in new buyers that never have owned a Jeep before.

It's quite car-like, with a two-toned interior, lots of safety features and an obvious Jeep heritage. It's designed to compete in the compact SUV segment and appeal to single professionals who are in their early 20s to 40s.

The Compass has standard side curtain air bags, available Boston Acoustics sound system, an optional 4 x 4 system and plenty of other features.

The Patriot is a more traditional Jeep -- ready for just about anything. It has in its styling some flavor of the Jeep Liberty, along with the old Jeep Cherokee.

The Patriot comes in base and Limited models, and is available with Freedom Drive I, a full-time four wheel drive system, or Freedom Drive II off Road Package, which offers a continuously variable transmission with a low range that engages when the off-road mode is activated. It also has 17-inch all terrain tires and aluminum wheels, a full spare and an air-filtration system.

Standard equipment includes side curtain air bags, Boston Acoustics sound system, sliding center arm rest and a washable load floor

Power comes from a 172 horsepower 2.4 liter four-cylinder engine.

Meanwhile, the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, the first four-door Wrangler Unlimited, has the most cargo space ever offered on a Wrangler: 46,4 cubic feet behind the second row seat.

Power comes from a 3.8 liter V-6 with 245 horsepower. An electronic stability program, electronic roll mitigation program, occupant classification system and optional side air bags round out the package.

The Unlimited has room for five adults and comes in three models: Unlimited XM, Sahara and Rubicon.

Though it's a new model, it still keeps some traditional Jeep features, such as full framed or half doors, exposed hinges, fold-down windshield and removable tops.

Prices and mileage figures were not yet available.

Chrysler: Taking chances as a design philosophy

Wednesday, October 18, 2006

By Don Hammonds, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The 2007 Chrysler Aspen has a base price of $31,940.

Be daring. Be bold. And maybe -- even be divisive.

That, in a sense, sums up the design philosophy of none other than the Chrysler Unit of DaimlerChrysler. Actually, it sums up the philosophy of the whole company.

Chrysler has long since learned that taking chances pays off, as witnessed by products such as the PT Cruiser, Chrysler 300 and this year, the all-new 2007 Chrysler Sebring. The Sebring looks like nothing else on the road, and that's a good thing, because just about all the other family sedans look as though they came from the same mold.

It's got a fastback roof line, those familiar Chrysler Crossfire-like strakes across the hood, and a racy, hunkered down profile. The interior, too, has familiar Chrysler themes, which means sophisticated, tailored and different from what everybody else is doing.

The Sebring is likely not to be everybody's cup of tea, but then again, neither have any of the other success stories that Chrysler's had of late. I expect the Sebring to carve out a whole new audience of "fashion forward" buyers who are value oriented, but want to drive something that is not a block of cheese on wheels.

The base engine on the Sebring is a 172 horsepower 2.4 liter four; a 2.7 liter, 190 horsepower V-6 and 3.5 liter, 235 horsepower V-6 also are available. Estimated mileage for these engines is 23 mpg city and 31 highway.

The Sebring also has a lot of interesting technology including a Harmon/Kardon information, entertainment and safety navigation audio system; heated/cooled cupholder; optional available rear-seat DVD/entertainment system; standard seat-mounted thorax air bags; standard side curtain air bags and low risk deployment air bags and available Electronic Stability Program and anti-lock brakes.

Prices for the Sebring start at $18,995 and top out at $23,995.

The other new product for Chrysler is the Aspen, a full-sized SUV based on Dodge's Durango that is being billed as the "300 of SUVs."

That might be a bit of a stretch, but the Aspen does have a lot of the styling cues that are now the hallmark of the 300. And Chrysler also has managed to put in just enough styling differentiation between the Durango and the Aspen that buyers of the Aspen will not feel slighted.

Base price for the Aspen is $31,940 -- it tops out at $39,225.

The Aspen has room for up to eight, and it's powered by a 4.7 liter, V-8 engine. You also can get the well-known 5.7 liter Hemi V-8 engine on the Aspen.

The Aspen is distinguished by packages. It offers "E" and "J" packages with both coming in two-wheel and all-wheel drive versions.

Standard equipment includes side curtain air bags, second row 40/20/40 folding seat, two passenger third-row seat, power driver's seat, rear passenger heat and air conditioning system, mini trip computer with compass and outside temperature data and stain resistant fabric.

Stepping up to the "J" package offers a 60/40 third row seat, chrome wheels, reclining second row seats, running boards, leather seats, parking assist system, six disc audio system and Sirius satellite radio.

Podium Finish at 'Final Fight' Seals the Deal on Hubinette's Second Championship

Mopar Speed | IRWINDALE - -
Team Mopar's Samuel Hubinette, the inaugural 2004 Formula D champ, set forth on a mission in 2006 to reclaim his title, after finishing second in the '05 points battle. The "Crazy Swede" can now say "mission accomplished," as his third-place showing on Saturday at Southern California's "House of Drift," Irwindale Speedway, earned him the 2006 title and brought home Mopar's first championship of the year. Hubinette entered the "Final Fight" at Irwindale, before the largest crowd ever to witness a drifting event, with a 36-point lead on Rhys Millen, and claimed the title by advancing to the Final Four round. The "Crazy Swede" qualified his NuFormz Racing Mopar Dodge Viper SRT10 second, and then defeated Mitsuru Haraguchi to advance to the Elite Eight. Millen kept the heat on with round wins of his own, making Hubinette's second-round match-up against Kenji Yaminaka all-important.

Hubinette and Yaminaka both went all-out, but a mistake in the corner by Yaminaka proved the difference, as the judges advanced Hubinette, earning him the championship. Hubinette and his team, the NuFormz crew of Shaun Carlson (owner) and crew members Kenny Nevins and Tim Dunbar, along with team manager and DaimlerChrysler Youth/Urban Marketing Manager B.J. Birtwell, high-fived in celebration in pit lane.

In the Final Four round, Hubinette was unable to advance past event winner Daijiro Yoshihara. With Tanner Foust unable to stage for the third-place race, Hubinette took the last podium spot and marked his championship with a victory lap in his trademark style, hanging out the door of his Mopar Dodge Viper and unleashing plumes of tire smoke on the cheering Irwindale crowd. The outing was Hubinette's fifth podium finish in seven races, and his three wins were the most on the series this year.

"It's been a pretty big year," observed Hubinette. "I took part in my first feature film [The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift] as a stunt driver, I got engaged, I became an American citizen, I won my second championship, and I'm getting married in December. Wow! 2006 has rocked for me. We're going to come back just as strong next year and look to capture our third championship, this time in the Mopar Dodge Charger SRT8."

2007 Dodge Rams to Run on B-5 Biodiesel

AUTOMOTIVE FLEET | ST. LOUIS
– DaimlerChrysler will expand its promotion of clean, renewable biofuels by delivering each new 2007 Dodge Ram diesel pickup truck to owners running on biodiesel fuel. Every Dodge Ram diesel coming off the assembly line at the company’s Fenton, Mo., north plant will be fueled with B-5 — made with 5-percent clean, renewable diesel derived from soybeans.

The Dodge Ram diesel is already approved for regular use with B-5 fuel.

The Dodge Ram Heavy Duty 2500/3500 series diesel pickup trucks are powered by the 5.9L Cummins turbo-diesel engine. Beginning in Jan. 2007, the vehicles will be built with the new Cummins 6.7L, turbo-diesel engine and will meet all federal and state environmental standards.

More than 15,000 Jeep Liberty CRD diesels have already been delivered to customers running on B-5. And in early-2007, DaimlerChrysler will launch the Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD with 3.L, common rail, turbo-diesel engine, which also will be fueled with B-5 at the factory. These vehicles are also approved for regular use with B-5 biodiesel fuel.

In addition to fueling each 2007 Dodge Ram diesel with B-5, the company has approved the use of B-20 in the vehicle for commercial, government, and military fleets. For this program, vehicles will require a supplemental fuel filter and must be used with fuel meeting the military’s quality requirements. The experience gained in this test program will contribute toward finalization of a nationwide standard for B-20 fuel. DaimlerChrysler is working with other automakers, suppliers, fuel refiners and distributors, customers, and research organizations to develop a national B-20 standard that could dramatically increase the use of this renewable fuel.

The standard must be developed to allow manufacturers to use B-20 in all of their vehicles, including the millions of diesel vehicles already on the road, as well as those built in the future.

In addition, the company’s lineup of FFVs for 2007 includes:

  • SUVs with 4.7L engine: Dodge Durango, Chrysler Aspen, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Commander.
  • Pickup trucks with 4.7L engine: Dodge Ram and Dakota.
  • Minivans with 3.3L engine: Dodge Caravan and Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & County.
  • Chrysler Sebring sedan with 2.7L engine.

TI Processors Drive Integrated Automotive Displays

TJTELEMATICS JOURNAL | TEXAS - - Addressing automotive instrument cluster systems' growing performance requirements, Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) expanded its 32-bit TMS470 microcontroller (MCU) platform, offering new devices for instrument cluster host controller applications. As the amount of information displayed in vehicles increases — from enhanced vehicle diagnostics and driver assistance features such as rear park assist cameras, to digital media and full real-time navigation systems — drivers demand higher performance graphics and more highly integrated displays.

To meet the challenge, new TMS470PLFx MCUs are targeted for systems with up to six stepper motors and are tightly coupled with TI's OMAP33x and DaVinci TMS320DM64x based graphics controller to drive high resolution liquid crystal display (LCD) and Thin-Film Transistor (TFT) displays.

With the recent advances in vehicle digital display technology, traditional analog gauges complement, and in some instances, are being entirely replaced by digital displays. Consumers who are accustomed to high- performance graphics in their personal computers and handheld devices demand no less from their vehicles displays — high quality graphic is a must.

The new TMS470 generation of MCUs for cluster applications will help developers build highly integrated cluster solutions that use a color graphics display controller with the real-time performance and versatility inherent in OMAP and DaVinci technology.

TMS470PLFx MCUs can directly drive small segment LCDs through its embedded 128-segment LCD controller, while the use of peripheral modules such as the High-End Timer (HET), Direct Memory Access Controller (DMA), and Multi-Buffered SPI (MibSPI) allow the TMS470PLFx instrument cluster MCU family to directly drive some other types of digital displays with no CPU load impact. The TMS470PLFx MCUs can also drive up to 6 stepper motors directly through the use of its intelligent peripherals, and supports modulated frequency and slew rate control to reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI).

TI's OMAP Platform is comprised of high-performance, power efficient processors, a robust software infrastructure and a comprehensive support network for the rapid development of differentiated multimedia-enhanced devices. Based on an ARM926 processing core, the OMAP33x applications processor platform includes advanced multimedia performance, an 18-bit LCD controller, a 2D graphics accelerator engine, robust frame buffer performance, a high-throughput DMA interface and several other features for graphics and streaming video applications.

The DM64x architecture is a highly integrated system-on-chip (SoC) that has absorbed many external components required for digital video. Based on TI's DaVinci technology, this architecture includes multimedia codecs, multiple display output types, and robust frameworks for rapid development of high-performance graphics systems, giving cluster manufacturers powerful capabilities to bring new digital graphic and video products to market.

Scalability and compatibility of designs across automotive platforms give cluster system designers the flexibility to address ever-changing market requirements during all phases of development. The suite of intelligent peripherals and common architecture across TMS470 devices allows for more efficient development and an overall reduced system cost. In addition, the ability to use a single graphics library on all devices for image rendering offers developers the same look and feel at the API level across processors.

This feature ensures that developers' graphics software is extremely scalable from low- to high-end clusters, helping reduce time to market and development costs. The TMS470 MCU instrument cluster platform is also pin-for-pin compatible for reduced hardware redesign.

Developers can start designing with TMS470 MCUs, OMAP or DaVinci DM64x processors with evaluation modules, starter kits and demonstration platforms along with compatible software from TI and leading third parties, including Lauterbach, iSYSTEMS, TES, Altia, Sophia, ETAS, and Vector.

TMS470PLFx and OMAP33x devices are available in samples today with the DaVinci DM64x processors available in fourth quarter 2006.

TI's TMS470 MCU is used in the vast majority of automotive safety systems around the world such as antilock braking systems and airbag electronics, while TI's leading digital signal processors offer solutions for infotainment, navigation, and electronic drive assist. The TI automotive portfolio extends into mixed signal solutions integrating analog-, power-, digital-circuits, as well as embedded processors.

The company has achieved ISO/TS16949:2002 certification at 36 facilities worldwide.

Dassault Announces PowerFeature for Automotive Sector

PARIS, France, October 17, 2006 - Dassault Systèmes (DS) (Nasdaq: DASTY; Euronext Paris: #13065, DSY.PA), a world leader in 3D and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) solutions, today announced a new Industry Solution Business Process Content (BPC), specifically designed for the automotive sector called PowerFeature. Powerfeature standardizes and automatizes quality control across the entire supply chain, with a full feature based part design strategy, integrating processes from design, process planning to manufacturing.

“Through a successful collaboration between Dassault Systèmes and DaimlerChrysler, DS adapted and enhanced the key business processes originally developed by DaimlerChrysler to create PowerFeature,” says Klaus Peter Berg, Manager of IT Production, DaimlerChrysler AG. “This Industry Solution is a central component of the upcoming CATIA V5 rollout for DaimlerChrysler and its suppliers.” As part of an ongoing strategic relationship, Dassault Systèmes contributes to DaimlerChrysler’s more efficient and profitable supply chain.

Drawing on 25 years of innovation, Dassault Systèmes bases its state-of-the-art Industry Solutions on sector-specific PLM practices, covering innovative and well-proven business scenarios. In order to develop BPCs, DS engineers first identify customers’ specific needs and the associated industrial processes, then create a preconfigured solution to be leveraged by multiple customers, either from the same industry or with the same processes. These “accelerators” enable more customers to benefit from in-depth industry knowledge at a fraction of the cost.

DaimlerChrysler selected DS partner Transcat PLM GmbH & Co. KG to implement the integrated PLM solution in December 2006. DaimlerChrysler, Transcat PLM and Dassault Systèmes will demonstrate PowerFeature to a group of industry suppliers at a dedicated seminar, which will take place in Stuttgart, Germany on October 17, 2006. Further information about the product will be available after the seminar on the DaimlerChysler engineering portal: https://engineering.daimlerchrysler.com.

Three Mercedes-Benz BLUETEC vehicles are on their way

AUTOBLOG.COM | Damon Lavrinc - - Hot on the heels of the widespread adoption of new diesel throughout the U.S. last week, Mercedes has announced the impending arrival of three BLUETEC equipped models.

The ML320 CDI SUV, the R320 CDI, tarted-up minivan and the E320 BLUETEC will all come equipped with a three-liter V6 diesel that will make upwards of 200 HP and close to 400 lb.-ft. of torque. Mercedes contends that these new diesels will provide the pull of a V8, yet return mileage numbers comparable to a four-cylinder.

The E320 BLUETEC sedan will chug happily along for over 700 miles before it needs more go juice, returning 40 percent better fuel economy when matched up against a comparably equipped E-series. The ML320 CDI increases its fuel mileage by 28 percent and the R-class will get a 32 percent bump in fuel economy.

These new engines claim to meet the world's most stringent emissions standards and should begin arriving on U.S. shores soon.

MERCEDES-BENZ launches three new diesel-powered models

Quiet, Strong Diesels Power Mercedes-Benz Sedan and Sport Utilities

MONTVALE, N.J. – Today Mercedes-Benz is launching three new models powered by new-generation diesel engines that are impressively quiet, clean and fast. As earlier-technology diesels are disappearing from the U.S. market, Mercedes-Benz is announcing the availability of the ML320 CDI, a mid-size sport utility with a suggested retail price of $ 44,455; the R320 CDI, a six-passenger luxury vehicle priced at $ 44,775; and the E320 BLUTEC, a full-size luxury sedan that begins at $ 52,325 (all three prices include a destination charge of $775).

The new diesel vehicles are powered by an innovative three-liter V6 diesel engine that combines the impressive torque of a V8 engine with the great fuel economy of four-cylinder engines. The new R320 CDI and ML320 CDI make 215 horsepower and 398 lb.-ft. of torque, while the E320 BLUETEC produces 208 and torque of 400 lb.-ft. All three models are fitted with the latest CDI electronic fuel injection, and the E320 BLUETEC features new emission control technology that holds the potential to meet the world's toughest clean air standards.

Aided by its aerodynamic styling, the E320 BLUETEC boasts a whopping 40 percent better fuel mileage than a comparable gasoline-powered model, and its EPA city/highway rating of 27/37 miles per gallon means the luxury sedan can cruise more than 700 miles on a single tank of fuel. With a city/highway rating of 21/28 mpg, the R320 CDI gets 32 percent better fuel economy, while the ML320 CDI sport utility (rated at 21/27 mpg) provides a 26 percent improvement. Both CDI models have a cruising range of well over 600 miles before refueling.
