ESSEN, Germany — Everyone has thought deep down that the much-maligned Jeep Compass had potential.

All it took was German tuner Startech, an affiliate of Brabus, to coax some more performance from this Caliber sibling.

Unveiled at the Essen Motor Show, the Startech Compass has an enhanced turbodiesel engine, boosted to 180 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque, thanks to the addition of a Startech SD3 performance kit. The tuning house adds a stainless-steel sport exhaust system with twin oval chrome tailpipes.

The modified Compass sits on 20-inch Startech Monostar five-spoke wheels with 245/35R20 tires. The adjustable suspension features progressive-rate springs that lower ride height by more than an inch.

Exterior modifications include a new front fascia, new rocker panels that also serve as running boards and a rear fascia with cutouts for the sport exhaust system.

Startech also offers a variety of interior upgrades, including stainless-steel door sills with an illuminated Startech logo.

For more information, see the Startech Web site.

What this means to you: It still won't tackle the Rubicon, but at least you won't have to apologize for your Startech Compass.
