So far, 309 Chrysler Fenton workers accept buyouts

In the last two weeks, 309 hourly workers at Chrysler Group's assembly plants in Fenton have signed up for retirement or voluntary severance packages. Workers have until April 23 to accept the packages.

If the number grows, it will be good news for Chrysler, which wants to cut 1,935 jobs at the Fenton plants by the end of 2009.

The layoffs are part of a broader restructuring plan. Nationwide, 4,312 hourly Chrysler workers had accepted retirement or severance packages as of April 2.

In February, Chrysler negotiated a plan with the United Auto Workers union to offer a $70,000 retirement incentive for hourly workers with at least 30 years of seniority, or $100,000 for those with more than one year of seniority who accept voluntary termination.
