Cleaner diesels to enter U.S. in 2008

Vehicles from VW and DaimlerChrysler would meet California's strict emission standards.
By John O'Dell, Times Staff Writer
November 29, 2006

Germany's two largest automakers are developing a fleet of diesel-powered cars and trucks that could be sold in California as early as 2008.

DaimlerChrysler and Volkswagen said Tuesday that their Chrysler, Mercedes-Benz, VW and Audi brands were designing nearly a dozen cars and sport utility vehicles with diesel engines using an emission-cleaning technology called Bluetec.

Diesels account for almost half of all new passenger vehicle sales in Europe, where concern about greenhouse gas emissions and fuel economy has been much greater than in the U.S. But they account for just 2% of the U.S. new-car market and can't be sold in California because they don't meet the state's emission standards, which are stricter than federal limits.

With California accounting for about 10% of all new-car sales, selling diesel models in the Golden State is crucial for an industry increasingly criticized for failing to produce fuel-efficient cars and trucks.

Diesels can achieve 25% to 40% greater fuel economy than comparable gasoline engines but typically cost $1,000 to $2,000 more. In addition, they have a reputation for noise, odor and sooty emissions, in part because diesel fuel here has contained hundreds of times more sulfur than European diesel.

But new federal rules resulted in the October debut of low-sulfur diesel across the U.S., and diesel engine design has been greatly improved because of development work in Europe.

The diesels' better fuel economy also would help the automakers meet California's restrictions on emissions of carbon dioxide, one of the so-called greenhouse gases that cause global warming. Those restrictions, enacted by the legislature last year, call for a 25% reduction in automotive greenhouse gases. They are being challenged in federal court by the auto industry in a case set to begin trial in January.

Carbon dioxide is formed as gasoline, diesel or other carbon-based fuel is burned; the more efficient an engine, the less carbon dioxide it emits.

DaimlerChrysler and Volkswagen announced their plan in Hollywood on the eve of the Los Angeles Auto Show, which begins media previews today and opens Friday to the public.

An environmental group called Jumpstart Ford plans to stage protests outside the auto show's 12-day run at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The group is criticizing automakers for giving lip service to fuel efficient technologies while continuing to produce large pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles with conventional gasoline engines.

The Bluetec emission-cleaning technology was developed by Mercedes-Benz to meet the new U.S. diesel emission standards. The system uses special filters to trap particulate matter that causes sooty emissions.

To meet California standards, a special catalytic converter or a device to inject ammonia-based liquid into the fuel stream will be added to reduce smog-causing nitrogen oxide emissions.

Mercedes-Benz debuted a trio of Bluetec-equipped cars last month — an E320 sedan, an ML sport utility and an R-Class sport wagon, and said it intended to add the system to its GL sport utility next year. Those vehicles are sold in 45 states where emission rules aren't as strict as in California.

Chrysler said its initial Bluetec diesel would be a Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV. Volkswagen intends to use a 4-cylinder diesel in its Jetta sedan and a new small SUV called the Tiguan in 2008, and diesel versions of its Touareg large SUV and Passat midsize sedan by 2009. Audi is expected to launch a diesel vehicle in 2008.

WAKE UP! Mercedes-Benz developing systems to combat microsleep behind the wheel

MERC DEVELOPS FATIGUE DETECTION

Mercedes Benz has thrown some light into its thinking and processes as it develops a system that will detect when you're in danger of falling asleep at the wheel.

Over the course of their investigations, the company's team of engineers, cyberneticists, mathematicians, computer scientists and psychologists is testing out a variety of methods for detecting driver fatigue as soon as it sets in. One of these techniques is the eye-blink observation method: an infrared camera directed at the driver's head permanently monitors the eye-blink frequency, enabling microsleep to be detected the instant the eyes stay closed for a certain period of time. A warning signal sounds in the car's cockpit in response.

Chrysler's Joe Eberhardt becomes man in the hot seat

Illustration by Tim Summers / The Detroit News

A difficult year

Joe Eberhardt arrived at Chrysler in June 2003 as head of global sales and marketing. After three profitable years, the tide began turning this year as rising gas prices pushed consumers away from trucks -- more than 70 percent of the automaker's lineup. With sales slumping and inventories piling up, Eberhardt's relationship with dealers grew strained as he pushed them to order vehicles they feared they could not sell. A timeline of key dates:

  1. April 27 : Chrysler reports that its first-quarter operating profit slid by more than half to $144 million from $306 million a year earlier as the automaker offered the highest incentives in the U.S. of any major automaker.
  2. July 27 : Chrysler releases second-quarter financial results and warns that it expects to lose $600 million in the third quarter because of production cuts driven by dwindling sales.
  3. Sept. 15 : Chrysler widens its third-quarter loss estimate to $1.5 billion and says it expects to lose $1.3 billion for all of 2006.
  4. Sept. 18 : Chrysler CEO Dieter Zetsche says Chrysler will cut output by 90,000 vehicles in the third quarter -- up from previous estimates of about 75,000 -- and another 45,000 in the fourth quarter to bring dealer inventories more in line with consumer demand and make room in showrooms for new models that will roll out later.
  5. Oct. 25 : Chrysler reports third-quarter loss of $1.48 billion. In an interview with The Detroit News, Zetsche says the automaker will have a plan outlining restructuring moves complete by the end of the year and ready to be made public in early 2007.
  6. Nov. : In a Webcast with dealers, Chrysler vice presidents Steve Landry and Michael Manley implore dealers to order more vehicles to help clear out inventories. The sales executives acknowledge the tension with the dealers.

Brandy Baker / The Detroit News

Analysts say the growing stockpiles of unsold vehicles signal that Chrysler has ignored signs of slumping demand for its large vehicles. "Chrysler is the industry's worst culprit (when it comes to) building beyond demand and then halting production to compensate," said Thomas Stallkamp, former Chrysler president.

With dealers steaming and new vehicles piling up, executive is at center of tensions

Josee Valcourt / The Detroit News |AUBURN HILLS -- Not since Ford Motor Co. dealers openly revolted against then-CEO Jacques Nasser in 2001 have relations between an automaker and its retailers become as bitter as the situation now at Chrysler.

At the center of the tensions between DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Group and its 3,400 dealers is Joe Eberhardt, 43, a hard-charging German executive who came to Auburn Hills from Mercedes-Benz in 2003.

Eberhardt's brusque style has never been popular with some dealers. But in the past year, as Chrysler has pressed dealers to order more inventory, launched ineffective promotions and saw the departure of seasoned sales executives working under Eberhardt, relations have taken a sharp turn for the worse.

Now with Chrysler trying desperately to mount a comeback after a $1.5 billion third quarter loss, Eberhardt's job may be in jeopardy. The dealer problems are likely to be a topic today as DaimlerChrysler's management board convenes in Auburn Hills, according to people familiar with the situation.

Chrysler needs the cooperation of its dealers to clear out vehicles stacked up on lots around Detroit and across the country. Chrysler officials now privately say that some dealers aren't likely to step up and put in large orders to help the automaker as long as Eberhardt remains vice president of global sales and marketing.

"The faster that Eberhardt gets out and we get (Chrysler CEO Tom) LaSorda and (sales executive Steven) Landry to listen to dealers' concerns, the quicker we can get this thing turned around," said one Detroit Chrysler-Jeep dealer.

The Detroit News interviewed company officials and nearly a dozen dealers in four states for this story. Some spoke on the condition of anonymity.

They pointed out that while Eberhardt may be abrasive, he cannot be held solely responsible for all of Chrysler's predicaments or its long-standing tendency to keep producing vehicles even as demand slumps.

"He probably inherited a situation that was a little hard," said Alan Helfman, vice president of River Oaks Chrysler Jeep in Houston. "There's a lot of competition out there. Until we get these new products in motion, we're in that little bit of a lull."

Business climate is tough

But the business environment is unforgiving. LaSorda is under intense pressure to hammer out a Chrysler turnaround plan by early next year that could include plant closures. He is aware of the rift between Eberhardt and dealers, and has traveled around the nation recently to try to smooth over relations.

Eberhardt, who declined to be interviewed for this report, has mended fences with some dealers in recent weeks. But some company insiders say his efforts may be too little, too late.

"The dealers think they're right and Eberhardt thinks he's right," said Martin "Hoot" McInerney, a nationally prominent dealer and owner of Northland Chrysler Jeep and Oakland Dodge in Michigan.

Even if LaSorda concludes that Eberhardt needs to be replaced, it's unclear where DaimlerChrysler bosses in Germany stand. Eberhardt is viewed as an exceptionally bright and driven executive with a solid track record at Mercedes. Before coming to Auburn Hills, he headed Mercedes sales in Britain, where he also clashed at times with dealers, according to European auto analysts.

Another question is who would replace Eberhardt at such a critical juncture.

Three senior executives in his department resigned this year -- head of sales Gary Dilts and marketing executives Jeff Bell and Julie Roehm -- leaving Chrysler's top ranks depleted. Many dealers viewed Dilts' departure as a loss. An experienced, personable sales manager, he was well liked out in the field but didn't see eye-to-eye with Eberhardt.

A company spokesman said Tuesday that Chrysler CEO Dieter Zetsche "runs his organization as a team. It is not his style to point fingers. So to suggest that one person would bear the burden of the entire team would be wrong."

Damage control sought

In a Webcast to dealers last Wednesday, the automaker pleaded with dealers to order their full allotments of vehicles for the rest of year. In doing so, Chrysler executives acknowledged the elephant in the room -- the anger many dealers feel toward the company.

"I know that some of you are mad at us out there," said Landry, head of Chrysler's field sales operations, who reports to Eberhardt. "But please take another look. We're asking you come to the party by taking unassigned orders."

"We're so close to making it right," Landry added plaintively. "But we've never been able to get things done when we're at odds."

In an interview last week with NewsTalk760-WJR, Zetsche also acknowledged the rift.

"We had some tension with our dealer body. That's a fact," Zetsche told host Paul W. Smith. "We have to overcome that and get the dealers on our side."

Dealers interviewed by The News say tensions with Eberhardt are rooted in style and substance.

While some conflict is inherent in dealer-automaker relations, many dealers complain that Eberhardt appears insensitive to their concerns and dwindling profits, noting that he absent-mindedly scrolls through his Blackberry during meetings.

In an industry filled with jocular, back-slapping sales types, Eberhardt is described as standoffish and unyielding. He isn't one to placate dealers or blame unpopular decisions on higher ups.

"If you have a manufacturer-dealer relationship where everybody is extremely happy, then something is wrong," Eberhardt said after joining Chrysler.

"There cannot be sunshine every day."

Tensions mount

The differences simmered below the surface when Chrysler was racking up profits and selling 300C sedans and Hemi engines as fast as factories could turn them out. But Chrysler's problems this year would have tested even the strongest relationships.

Last spring, dealers began pushing back when Chrysler pressed them to order vehicles.

By July, Chrysler was carrying an inventory of 647,000 vehicles. Chrysler's reintroduction of employee-style discounts for all buyers in the summer and its multimillion dollar Dr. Z ad campaign fell flat.

Dealers were further upset when Chrysler ratcheted back a program that helped offset the interest charges they pay on inventory. Those interest payments increase as cars languish on dealer lots, cutting into dealers' profits.

"That doesn't win you very many friends among dealers," said a Dodge dealer in the Southeast.

And some dealers complain they're getting vehicles that are over-equipped and over-priced for their markets.

As more dealers complained about the company's pressure tactics and policies, Chrysler acknowledged in July that it had produced too many vehicles and would post a loss for the third quarter.

Zetsche, the former Chrysler CEO, was openly critical of the decision-making in Auburn Hills that led to the rapid deterioration of its results. Chrysler's third-quarter loss -- more than double the shortfall first predicted by the company -- also hurt Zetsche, who was appointed CEO partly on the basis of the turnaround he had achieved at the U.S. automaker.

It's an inherited problem

In Eberhardt's defense, some dealers and company executives point out that he did not invent the controversial sales bank where vehicles that haven't been ordered by dealers are assigned. The growing stockpiles of unsold vehicles signaled that Chrysler had ignored signs of slumping demand for its large vehicles.

"Chrysler is the industry's worst culprit (when it comes to) building beyond demand and then halting production to compensate," Thomas Stallkamp, former Chrysler president and now a partner at private equity firm Ripplewood Holdings, told an industry conference last month.

Eberhardt also had little control over the timing of Chrysler's product launches, and the fact that most of its 10 new vehicles are only now hitting the market.

"He didn't get enough credit when Chrysler was successful," said one DaimlerChrysler executive, who asked to remain anonymous, "and now he's getting too much blame."

But industry experts say Eberhardt's style exacerbated a difficult situation.

"I have talked to dealers who are saying that they flat-out won't 'play ball' with anyone from Chrysler unless and until Eberhardt is sent packing -- because they simply don't trust him," Peter DeLorenzo, a former marketing consultant to Chrysler and publisher of the popular Web site Autoextremist.com, wrote last week.

"The trail of responsibility is short and clear -- it leads right to him and no one else."

Earlier this month, at the Beijing auto show, Eberhardt disputed the characterization that Chrysler dealers were on the verge of a revolt, saying, "We're now working with our dealers to get through these issues."

But time is running short for Eberhardt to resolve the conflicts.

History suggests he will have trouble surviving if he can't win back dealers. In October 2001, Ford's national dealer council sent the company's directors a highly critical memo about Nasser. It called him "distant, aloof and arrogant" and called for a change at the top.

Later that month, Nasser, who had also drawn the ire of employees, suppliers and the Ford family, was fired.

Rumours suggest the ‘SLS’ may rely on carbon fibre for its construction and could use a three seater layout, similar to the legendary McLaren F1.

WorldCarFans are running an image of how they think the finished vehicle will look, but to be honest, it looked more like a future Porsche GT1 than a future Mclaren Mercedes.

Personally, we hope it’ll look something like this.

San Antonio Resident Points to Kids, Pets, Lipstick That Led to America's
Messiest Minivan - Video Available

SAN ANTONIO, Nov. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- The Search for America's Messiest
Car is over. The contest winner, San Antonio resident and mother of three
Maria Williams, was chosen from among hundreds of individuals who submitted
entries in the first annual MyLife.MyCar.MyMess. online contest to be the
recipient of the grand prize: an all-new 2007 Chrysler Pacifica Touring
with kid-, pet- and ketchup-proof YES Essentials cloth seating.

Williams' winning entry included photos of her messy minivan, as well
as an essay describing how her favorite lipstick shades, her children's
favorite foods and her pets' unique odors decorate her vehicle's interior
as she zips to football practice, field trips and work.
"I heard about the contest and wanted to enter my 'Circus Car,' as I so
lovingly refer to it," said Williams. "Our family of five practically lives
in our vehicle, and we are constantly on the go, while eating and drinking
on our way to the next event in our lives."
"I can't believe I won! This will definitely keep me motivated to keep
our new family vehicle clean," she added.
According to a recent study by contest sponsor Milliken & Company,
Americans are over-scheduled, over-worked and over-committed through trying
to meet the daily demands of a career, family and friends. However, drivers
still want to keep their car free of dirt and debris without committing to
a daily car interior cleaning regimen.
Milliken research also showed that 70 percent of drivers surveyed rated
getting a vehicle clean with as little effort as possible as one of the
most important factors in maintaining a vehicle.
"We've had a lot of fun with this contest - it evolved into a support
group for messy car owners, with participants representing nearly every
state in the country telling a unique story about their 'life on the go,'"
said Stacy Walker, Marketing Communications Manager for YES Essentials
products. "After reviewing the entries, we are convinced that in order to
find out just how your neighbor lives, you only need to peek through their
car window!"
Based on the research, and in an effort to cater to drivers' busy
lifestyles, Milliken developed an automotive fabric technology able to
withstand and repel even the worst stains, to keep car interiors lasting
longer and looking better. YES Essentials interior fabrics and floor mats
can stand up against spilled coffee, dropped ketchup and smeared lipstick,
which come right out of the woven fibers. The fabric also reduces static
electricity, preventing shocks from sliding in and out of car seats, and
resists odor-causing bacteria growth.
Chrysler is the first in the market to offer the YES Essentials fabric
in its vehicles in 2007 and 2008.
"Chrysler is pleased to provide Maria Williams and her family with a
new 2007 Chrysler Pacifica Touring," said Jennifer Maren, Chrysler Pacifica
Brand Manager. "With a new more powerful engine, a new six-speed
transmission, seating for six and the all-important YES Essentials fabric,
we are confident that the Chrysler Pacifica will be a car the Williams
family is proud of and will keep clean."
From Sept. 12 to Oct. 16, 2006, messy car owners were encouraged to
visit MyLifeMyCarMyMess.com to post up to five photos of their car, plus a
short essay explaining how a chaotic life has led to the turmoil in his or
her vehicle. An online voting component was also added for visitors to rate
the cars on a scale of "Squeaky Clean" to "Dumpster on Wheels".
Contest sponsors YES Essentials and Chrysler Brand then presented the
winning family with an all-new 2007 Pacifica, and filmed a day-in-the-life
video to find out how the winner's busy lifestyle caused the mess in the
first place.
Additional prizes included a car upgrade for two first-place winners -
with YES Essentials seat covers, floor and trunk mats - and sets of YES
Essentials floor mats for 10 second-place winners.
The winning entries were selected by an independent judging panel, and
can be found at http://www.MyLifeMyCarMyMess.com.

DaimlerChrysler Plan Another Plant In India

GERMAN CAR SCENE| Warren M - - In order to meet a growing demand for luxury cars, DaimlerChrysler has today stated that it would set up a second factory in India.

DaimlerChrysler CEO, Wilfried Aulbur, said “We have plans to set up a new plant in India which could come up in and around Pune, as we have a good supplier network in the area.”

He added “We plan to manufacture products from our existing offerings in India in the proposed new plant. Also, it will give us possibility to expand in the future.”

DaimlerChrysler, currently sell the Mercedes Benz brand in India, distributing 1,915 cars in 2005. Aulbur expects sales to top 2000 this year, saying “By October end, we have sold 1,715 units and hope that overall sales growth is healthy for the full year, in line with our segment.”

2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible

2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible

What's special about it?
You may not have noticed, but the Chrysler Sebring convertible still exists. A rental lot superstar, it's been fully redesigned in hopes of elevating the midsize convertible out of obscurity. Not only does the 2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible look different from its predecessor, it now has some class-exclusive features to set it apart from its competition.

Three trim levels will be available. All three come with a standard power-operated soft top. The midlevel Touring and top-of-the-line Limited, however, can be outfitted with a power-retractable hardtop. That's right, it's an option. Constructed of three separate panels, the retractable hardtop opens and closes in less than 30 seconds and does away with the need for a Sebring coupe.

Compared to the previous Sebring convertible, the new car is 6 inches longer, 2 inches wider and 3 plus inches taller. Chrysler also stretched the wheelbase 3 inches and raised the seating position 2.5 inches. The interior can accommodate four adult passengers comfortably, while the larger trunk can also haul four golf bags with the top up. To load rear-seat passengers more easily, the front seatbelts are installed in the seat, not attached to the pillar.

The base model comes with Chrysler's 2.4-liter four-cylinder, mated to a four-speed automatic. The powertrain is rated at 173 horsepower (up from 150 on the previous base model) and 23/31 mpg city/highway mileage, an 8-percent improvement.

A 2.7-liter V6 is standard on Touring and Limited models. It's rated at 189 horsepower, 191 pound-feet of torque and 20/28 mpg city/highway mileage. The flex-fuel V6 runs on any blend of gasoline and ethanol up to E85. The Limited also offers an optional 3.5-liter V6 paired with a new six-speed automatic with AutoStick for manual shifting. The engine produces 235 hp and 232 lb-ft of torque.

Like the Sebring sedan, the convertible offers a long list of high-tech features. Among them are an onboard hard drive, heated and cooled cupholders, remote start, UConnect hands-free technology and Sirius Satellite Radio.

The 2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible goes on sale next spring. No prices have yet been announced.

What's Edmunds' take?
The 2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible provides plenty of practicality — open-air choices, spacious cabin for four passengers and a roomy cargo area for multiple golf bags. But function comes at the expense of form as the car's proportions leave it as bland-looking as its predecessor. — Michelle Krebs

| | Automotive News Europe / November 27, 2006 - 10:57 amVolkswagen group is considering making VW brand Chairman Wolfgang Bernhard the automaker's head of global production, sources said.

The move to change Bernhard's role at VW comes following the sudden resignation of VW group Chairman Bernd Pischetsrieder this month. Audi Chairman Martin Winterkorn replaces Pischetsrieder January 1.

The German media speculated that Bernhard would leave VW. However, Bernhard appeared at the Beijing auto show with VW. He declined comment.

Ex-DaimlerChrsysler Manager Charged With Stealing €40 million

Prosecutors have announced that they have charged a former DaimlerChrysler manager with ‘relieving’ the company of €40 million.

The 41 year old faked documents between 2000 and 2005, including invoices for computer services that were never delivered. Three other people from the finance department, have also been charged.

DaimlerChrysler truck unit eyes 7 percent operating margin

Reuters / FRANKFURT -- DaimlerChrysler's Truck Group aims to achieve an average operating profit margin of at least 7 percent in the future by boosting efficiency and exploiting economies of scale, the company said today.

"Plans also call for the average return on net assets to reach approximately 30 percent," the world's largest commercial vehicles manufacturer by volume said in a statement, without providing a concrete timeframe for the targets.

In the third quarter, operating profit jumped nearly 60 percent to $710.5 million (556 million euros) on 3 percent more revenue, translating to a margin of just below 7 percent as higher productivity, an improved model mix and better utilization rates lifted results. Truck sales gained 2 percent to 141,900 units.

"The Truck Group believes the remainder of the year will produce similar positive results for sales, revenue and earnings," the company said.

DaimlerChrysler expects to achieve "substantial" savings in the future through economies of scale, by launching for example its global heavy duty engine platform next year where the 200,000 units to be produced annually for Freightliner, Mercedes-Benz and Mitsubishi Fuso trucks will share about 90 percent of their parts.

DaimlerChrysler said it has an industry market share of more than 20 percent in the segment for trucks weighing more than 6 tons.

Smaller German rival MAN has launched a $13.2 billion (10.3 billion euros) hostile takeover offer for Swedish heavy truck specialist Scania in order to better compete with global giants such as DaimlerChrysler and Volvo AB.

DaimlerChrysler warned that a significant slowdown can be expected in the U.S. and Japanese truck markets next year, while by comparison the European market was expected to decrease only slightly and remain on an overall high level.

"We have prepared ourselves with various measures for the challenging market situation next year and expect to earn our costs of capital in 2007 as well," said Andreas Renschler, the DaimlerChrysler Board of Management member responsible for the Truck Group & Buses.

DaimlerChrysler battles mail scam

Sorting office

Crain's Detroit Business / November 27, 2006 - 2:18 pm DaimlerChrysler's financial services unit is working to alert consumers to a mail scam that bears the company's name.

Households across the country have been receiving letters from the so-called Ontario Lottery and Gaming Commission in Canada which claim the recipients have won $170,000 in a lottery. Fake checks for $2,260 are included with the letters and name "DaimlerChrysler Services" and "DaimlerChrysler Services Truck Finance" as the issuer.

The scam requires recipients to call a phony representative of the lottery commission and wire $2,260 in funds to "finalize the payment process," according to documents received by Farmington Hills, Mich.-based DaimlerChrysler Financial Services Americas. The deposit is supposed to be covered by the check sent in the letter.

As expected, the money is withdrawn from the victim's account, the fake check bearing DaimlerChrysler's name never clears and the $170,000 never arrives.

DaimlerChrysler has posted fraud alerts on its corporate Web sites at www.daimlerchryslerfinancialservices.com/na and www.dctruckfinancial.com.

The company also is encouraging victims to file a consumer fraud complaint with the Federal Trade Commission by calling 877-FTC-HELP or by visiting www.ftc.gov.

DaimlerChrysler Celebrate 50 Years In Brazil

DaimlerChrysler are celebrating fifty years of production at their plant in São Bernardo do Campo, Brazil.

50 years at brazil

DaimlerChrysler Chairman, Dr. Dieter Zetsche, said “Fifty years of operations in this country have contributed to DaimlerChrysler do Brasil becoming a truly Brazilian company which has grown along with the country. With our large experience here and based on 100 years of leadership in the automotive industry, the Mercedes-Benz brand can provide the consumers with premium prod-ucts and technology. That’s why we are the Brazilian market leader in luxury cars, trucks and buses.”

Work at the plant, officially started on September 28th 1956, with 862 employees. By 2006, that number has swollen to 11,500 workers.

Chrysler group will boost lineup, add stores in China

Tom W. LaSorda

Jason Stein | | Automotive News / November 27, 2006 - 1:00 am BEIJING -- The Chrysler group plans to add a mid-sized sedan, a minivan and a Jeep to its lineup in China next year as it aims to gain ground here.

CEO Tom LaSorda said the Chrysler group will build the three vehicles in China. Chrysler planned an announcement on the products this week and would not reveal details about models or plants involved.

The Chrysler group aims to triple its volume and double its dealerships in China over the next three years,

LaSorda said in an interview here during the Beijing auto show. Chrysler will be a key sales driver in the China strategy of parent company DaimlerChrysler AG.

The Chrysler group wants to sell more than 100,000 units here by 2009.

"We will triple our sales in the next few years," LaSorda said. "We need product here, and we will have it."

Chrysler already builds the 300C sedan at a plant near here that is co-owned by Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Corp. The factory also builds the Mercedes E class.

Chrysler's Chinese minivan will be the same product the automaker now produces in North America and Germany, LaSorda said.

"But it will be produced in China for China," he said.

LaSorda also said Chrysler will expand its dealerships to 100 stores by the end of 2007 from 58 today. Chrysler dealerships in China will not be paired with Mercedes stores.

"We need to grow our own retail network quickly," LaSorda said.

Chrysler sold about 25,000 units in China through October, LaSorda said.

It trails market leader General Motors, which sold 616,556 cars and trucks in China in 2005.

Joe Eberhardt, the Chrysler group's executive vice president of global sales, marketing and service, also said Chrysler will expand the marketing budget of the Jeep brand with a new Web site in China.

W. Europe will be first to get Dodge small car

Chrysler head says decision on partnership might come by end of the month

Jason Stein | | Automotive News Europe / November 27, 2006 - 10:06 am BEIJING -- Western Europe will be one of the Chrysler group's key markets when it launches a small car for the Dodge brand.

Chery Automobile of China is the leading candidate to produce such a vehicle for Dodge, said Chrysler group CEO Tom LaSorda.

He expects a decision by the end of the year, if not sooner. "We could even have a decision by the end of the month," LaSorda told Automotive News Europe on the sidelines of the Beijing auto show November 17.

Chrysler needs a partner for the small-car project because of the high costs and relatively low profit margins associated with building such a car. It has been talking with potential partners since earlier this year.

"We are down to two and Chery is the leader," LaSorda said. "But these kinds of negotiations are never easy."

He declined to name the other potential partner. Media reports have suggested that Chrysler also is talking with PSA/Peugeot-Citroen or Hyundai about the project.

LaSorda said a partner could either co-design the small car with Chrysler or develop it alone. He also hinted that more cars could follow as a result of the partnership.

"It will be the [small] segment initially at least," LaSorda said.

In addition to western Europe, Dodge initially would aim the small car at Mexico and Canada. Other markets, such as the US, would come later.

In Europe, Chrysler wants an entry-level car positioned below the Dodge Caliber lower-medium hatchback to help drive Dodge's expansion there. The car possibly could be based on the Dodge Hornet concept that debuted in March at the Geneva auto show.

U.S. auto sales slowing, say forecasts

Reuters / November 27, 2006 - 9:00 am NEW YORK -- After a string of strong years, U.S. auto sales are slowing and an increasing number of forecasts say sales could fall next year to their lowest in nearly a decade, the Wall Street Journal reported on its Web site today.

Slowing growth in the overall U.S. economy and a slump in the housing industry, particularly in big markets such as California, come at a bad time for General Motors, Ford Motor Co. and the Chrysler group, the paper said.

IRN, a Michigan market researcher, forecasts U.S. 2007 sales of 16.3 million light vehicles, or cars and trucks. That would be the lowest since 1998 and a drop of 300,000, or 1.8 percent, from this year's expected sales of 16.6 million vehicles.

Some automakers are more optimistic, the paper said, with both GM and Toyota Motor Corp. forecasting 2007 U.S. auto sales of 16.5 million cars and trucks.

But analysts at Bank of America, Wachovia Corp. and Citigroup expect a sharper decline, as does investor Wilbur Ross, who has spent hundreds of millions of dollars in the past 18 months buying battered auto suppliers, the newspaper said.

Volvo, Chrysler, Ford vehicles recalled

The Associated Press November 22, 2006, 8:49PM EST

The government on Wednesday announced four separate auto recalls affecting about 300,600 vehicles.

More than half of the vehicles being recalled -- 170,099 -- are Volvo passenger cars, station wagons and sport utility vehicles from the 1999-2002 model years, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.

Volvo Cars of North America, a unit of Ford Motor Co., is recalling vehicle speed controls on some C70, C70 convertible, S60, S70, S80, V70, V70XC and XC70 models. A malfunctioning electronic throttle module may cause the vehicles to unnecessarily go into "limp home" mode, in which the vehicle's speed is limited to 10 to 30 mph, NHTSA said.

Dealers will install upgraded software on the affected vehicles' electronic throttles.

DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Group is recalling 127,928 Chrysler Pacificas from the 2005-2006 model years. The crossover vehicles have fuel pump modules and powertrain control module software that may allow the engine to stall under certain conditions, causing a crash to occur without warning.

Dealers will reprogram the powertrain control module and replace the fuel pump module on Pacificas built from Aug. 1 to Sept. 30, 2004, NHTSA said.

Chrysler also is recalling 2,258 Sebring sedans from the 2007 model year with a hood latch part that may break and allow the hood to open while driving. Dealers will replace the hood latches at no cost to owners.

Ford is recalling 422 Ford Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis sedans from the 2007 model year to properly secure the windshield to the body, NHTSA said. Dealers will replace the windshields at no cost to owners.

In another action, DaimlerChrysler has begun mailing an owner's manual addendum to owners of 18,245 Jeep Compass SUVs from the 2007 model year. The original manuals do not contain required warning information about the higher risk of rollover in an SUV, NHTSA said.

Chrysler's plan for dealers

  • Giving dealers $200 for every 2007 model they order through the end of the year, if they order all the vehicles Chrysler has allotted to them.

  • Promising to eliminate the sales bank in 2007

  • With dealers balking at ordering new 2007 model cars and trucks, DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Group has started offering cash bonuses to dealers who stock up before the end of the year and promised to halt its practice of overbuilding vehicles and pushing them onto dealers.

In a Webcast to dealers Wednesday afternoon, Chrysler sales executives acknowledged dealers' growing frustration about the automaker's huge supply of unsold Jeep, Chrysler and Dodge vehicles and implored them to step up one last time to order their full allotment of vehicles for the rest of the year.

"We need you to help put us back in a position of strength by taking your November unassigned vehicles and also taking your December dealer orders so that we can get to 2007 really marching," Steven Landry, head of Chrysler's field sales operations, said in the Webcast, which aired on a dealers' Internet site. "We have a plan in place but we need you to come along."

After the Auburn Hills-based unit of DaimlerChrysler posted a $1.5 billion loss in the third quarter, Chrysler executives have been under tremendous pressure to finish the year strong and clear out excess inventories of vehicles built without dealer orders, known as the sales bank.

But many Chrysler retailers have refused to order new vehicles because their lots are teeming with unsold inventory.

Dealers pay financing charges on cars on their lot and interest piles up the longer a vehicle sits unsold, which is the main reason dealers balk at accepting excess inventory.

To help allay those concerns, dealers said Chrysler told them last week that the automaker will give them $200 for every 2007 model car or truck they take -- if the dealers take the full number Chrysler has allotted them for November and December. Chrysler also will pay $400 for every 2006 model dealers take from the sales bank.

During Wednesday's Webcast, Chrysler executives promised dealers that the automaker will build to demand next year and not pressure them again.

"They give you some incentive for the troops to march," said Alan Helfman, a Chrysler and Jeep dealer in Texas who has ordered about 300 2006 and 2007 models. "(Chrysler's) the generals and we're the troops who take it to the battlefields. Fortunately, we have something to fight with in the battlefield."

Chrysler spokeswoman Lori McTavish confirmed that the Webcast outlining the company's year-end strategy took place, but said the automaker does not discuss the content of its communications with dealers.

"We consider that to be a matter between our dealers and the company," McTavish said.

This isn't the first time that Chrysler has promised to eliminate the sales bank, several dealers told The Detroit News. While some believe Chrysler will halt its historic practice of building cars without having orders for them, others are doubtful.

For now, the new dealer cash incentives signal that Chrysler's high stockpile of older models is discouraging dealers from ordering 2007 models, which should be rolling into dealerships this time of year.

"A lot of Chrysler dealers have physical limitations on their lots so they can't take more vehicles," said Jesse Toprak, an analyst with Edmunds.com, a research Web site for car buyers.

While Chrysler is playing catch up and trying to convince its dealer body to take new model vehicles, competitors have their 2007 vehicles already in place at dealerships, Toprak said.

That puts Chrysler at a disadvantage because consumers who are comparison shopping new cars and trucks, will go elsewhere if they can't find the 2007 Dodge, Jeep or Chrysler vehicle they're looking for, he said.

Dealers can use the $200 they get for taking 2007 models at their own discretion, including adding it to existing consumer discounts. By itself, the incentive isn't unusual, even if it's being offered at the start of the 2007 model-year cycle, Toprak said.

But the automaker's gesture comes at a time when Chrysler is trying to shrink its inventory and when some dealers -- still grappling with lots crammed with 2006 vehicles -- have balked at the company's request to order more cars and trucks.

"Chrysler is trying to find ways of pushing its 2007 inventory into dealership lots," Toprak said. "That's not quite the norm."

One dealer who spoke on condition of anonymity said he does not plan to take more vehicles than necessary despite the automaker's latest deal issued last week.

"Our allocation isn't that high," the dealer said, "but we don't need any more cars."

    Dealers: Chrysler built wrong vehicles

The Chrysler group says it has built too many vehicles. Dealers say vehicles such as a base 2006 Dodge Grand Caravan are tough to sell. A 2006 model is shown.

'Weirdly packaged minivans' and others sit unsold on 6 lots

Bradford Wernle | | Automotive News / November 27, 2006 - 1:00 am Dealer Thomas Vann has been sitting on 13 Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan long-wheelbase minivans since June, when he bought them from Chrysler's sales bank.

Vann, owner of Team Hillsdale Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep in Hillsdale, Mich., says he can't get rid of the vehicles. As with other sales bank vehicles, Chrysler built the base-level minivans with no dealer orders, then shipped them to holding lots and sought dealers to buy them.

Vann describes the vehicles as "weirdly packaged minivans."

"There are no (lease deals), no keyless entry, no key fob, no power front chair," he says. "People say, 'I don't want that. I'd rather get the megapackage.' It's just a queer package and no great program."

Queer, indeed. Vann says a 2006 Dodge Grand Caravan SE base model leases for about $6 more a month than a fully loaded 2007 Grand Caravan SXT. Unlike the base model, the 2007 SXT comes with power sliding doors, triple-zone temperature control, keyless entry, power driver's seat and aluminum wheels.

"What would you rather do, get more equipment for less money?" Vann asks.

Many Chrysler group dealers say they face similar problems. Chrysler has acknowledged that it built too many vehicles. But many dealers say Chrysler compounded the problem by building the wrong vehicles, contributing to the automaker's $1.5 billion third-quarter loss.

    Mixed-up mix

    • Loaded Chrysler Aspen Limited SUV with no navigation system
    • Base-level Grand Cherokee with V-8 engine (V-6 sells better)
    • Base-level 2006 Grand Caravan SE that costs more to lease than loaded 2007 SXT

    Muddled mix

Dealers say Chrysler got the inventory mix wrong in 2006. They acknowledge the market was especially hard to predict with fluctuations in gasoline prices. But they blame the company for ignoring their recommendations and for weak incentive programs.

One New York area dealer who declined to be identified said: "They had trucks misordered with every mismatched combination and permutation you can make."

The new Chrysler Aspen SUV has been a particular problem, he says.

"You get a loaded-up Aspen for $44,000 with everything but navigation," he says, adding that people who pay that much expect a navigation system.

Kingsport, Tenn., Dodge dealer Doug Alley has been sitting on a base-level Dodge Ram 1500 ST since June, when he bought it from the sales bank. With a sticker price of $28,405, the truck has options including a cloth interior, a split folding rear seat, an anti-spin differential and cruise control.

Alley also has a Ram 1500 SLT, the upscale model, with a sticker price of $30,750. The SLT comes with all the features of the ST, plus an upgraded interior, power windows, power door locks and alloy wheels. Both trucks have a $5,500 rebate.

The price differential is so small, "the loaded ST is just not sellable," says Alley, who says half his business at Alley Dodge is Ram trucks.

"A working guy doesn't care about the cloth split bench seat or the anti-spin. If I was ordering the ST, I'd be ordering it with no options."

Without the options, it would cost about $1,500 less, a real difference to Alley's payment-conscious customers. "That example applies to a lot of stuff they do," says Alley.

    Counting on dealers

Chrysler spokesman Kevin McCormick said: "While there may be vehicles out there with less than perfect configuration, our dealers are great people, and we do believe they can find the right customers for those vehicles."

McCormick said Chrysler had 508,724 vehicles in dealer inventory (an 80-day supply) at the end of October. The mix was 55 percent 2007 models and 45 percent 2006s, he said. The company wants to have no more than 500,000 by year end.

The inventory levels are lower this year than they have been in previous years because Chrysler slashed production about 21 percent in the third quarter. On Nov. 1, 2005, Chrysler dealers had 602,500 vehicles, or a 95-day supply.

Jeremy Anwyl, president of the industry research firm Edmunds.com, said strange mixes on dealer lots late in the product cycle are normal because the most desirable cars sell quickly.

But, Anwyl adds, "I think the situation would be aggravated for any manufacturer that banked unsold cars."

One reason oddly equipped vehicles are built is that automakers make commitments to suppliers to purchase certain quantities of components they think they need to use, he adds.

Sid DeBoer, chairman of public dealership group Lithia Inc., of Medford, Ore., said the configuration of cars in Chrysler's sales bank has "markedly improved" compared with a year ago.

Chrysler's recent change from monthly to weekly allocations has helped, he said.

"Weekly is just a tremendous improvement," he said, praising Chrysler's sales team. But, DeBoer adds, "I'd love to see them develop a system where they would stop the sales bank and not build a car without a dealer order."

    Automotive News / November 27, 2006 - 1:00 am

While the Dodge brand will be adding the highly retro-styled, rear-wheel-drive Challenger coupe in 2008, Chrysler has given no hint whether it might create a rwd coupe for the Chrysler brand. Until now, that is. The V-8-powered Chrysler Nassau concept is described as a four-passenger, four-door with a roof designed to give it the appearance of a coupe. An unveiling is planned in January at the Detroit auto show.

Chryslers 300C Touches Down in China

    Chrysler

China Gets a Taste of Modern American Luxury

Chryslers image of modern American luxury is quickly making its way around the globe. After being met with resounding success in North America, Europe was next in line to get a full dose of HEMI action. Now, the ultra-slick but imposing 300C luxury sedan has touched down in China. Chrysler has big hopes for the 300 in China, where bold, in-your-face styling is synonymous with wealth and luxury. With its short overhangs, tiny decklid and menacing looking front end, its sure to be a success. This heavy-hitting full-size sedan will not only be sold in China, but will also be assembled locally to expand the Chrysler nameplate in the rest of Asia.

As with the Austrian-built European-market cars, all 300s, including those powered by lesser V6 engines have the letter "C" as a suffix to the name. Buyers will be offered a choice of three different engines, an entry-level 190-hp 2.7-lite rV6 mated to a four-speed automatic with AutoStick manual mode, a 250-hp 3.5-liter "High Output" V6 with a five-speed automatic and AutoStick, and the renowned 345-hp 5.7-liter HEMI V8 with MDS cylinder deactivation and a five-speed auto. The European Mercedes-Benz-sourced CRD turbodiesel engine, the 425-hp hotrod SRT-8, and the all-wheel drive variants will not be offered.

Every model in the 300C lineup is extremely well equipped with a very lengthy standard features list. Even the most basic models include leather-trimmed heated seats, a power-adjustable tilt and telescoping steering wheel, power-adjustable pedals, six-disc CD system with rear seat DVD entertainment, a multi-function steering wheel with Bluetooth handsfree communication, and parking assist. Thats an impressive array, especially for the most basic model. Also standard are 18-inch chrome-plated alloy wheels and HID xenon headlamps, which will ensure that every 300 that rolls onto Chinese streets looks as good as our own range-topping model.

The suspension, steering system and wheel and tire package of the car has also been tweaked for Chinese customers. Rather than the softer setting of the North American market car, Orient-bound 300Cs get a setup tuned for high-speed ride and handling. All cars also get standard four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, plus ESP stability control.

Chinese-market 300Cs are built at the Beijing-Benz DaimlerChrysler production facility. The plant, which recently underwent significant upgrades to accommodate the full-size Chrysler sedan as well as Mercedes-Benzs top-selling E-Class luxury sedan, re-opened its doors on September 15th, 2006. In addition to these two luxury vehicles, the Beijing facility builds the Jeep 2500, which is modernized version of the antiquated Cherokee (pre-Liberty), as well as the Jeep 4000/4700, which is the previous generation Grand Cherokee. Despite severed ties with Mitsubishi, the plant also produces the current generation Outlander and the old Montero Sport for sales in China.
