The move to change Bernhard's role at VW comes following the sudden resignation of VW group Chairman Bernd Pischetsrieder this month. Audi Chairman Martin Winterkorn replaces Pischetsrieder January 1.

The German media speculated that Bernhard would leave VW. However, Bernhard appeared at the Beijing auto show with VW. He declined comment.
