DaimlerChrysler unit Fuso recalls 75,400 vehicles in Japan

Reuters / October 17, 2006 - 11:00 am TOKYO -- Mitsubishi Fuso Truck & Bus Corp., the Japanese unit of DaimlerChrysler AG, will recall 75,400 trucks and buses in Japan to repair a faulty brake device, according to a filing with Japan's transport ministry today.

Mitsubishi Fuso, held 85 percent by DaimlerChrysler, will recall Fuso Canter small trucks and Fuso Rosa microbuses made between June 1995 and March 2004, the filing said.

Because of an insufficient waterproofing structure, water containing a snow melting agent can enter the braking system and cause it to overheat and catch fire.

There have been two reported cases of fires because of the device, which is used to keep the vehicle from sliding backward when starting on a hill, according to the filing.

No one at Mitsubishi Fuso was immediately available for comment.
