Chrysler global sales rise in 2006


Bradford Wernle | | Automotive News Europe / February 5, 2007 - 1:00 am | DETROIT -- Chrysler group's international sales grew 15 percent in 2006, up to 206,925 from 180,088 the year before.

The growth was spurred by the Dodge brand, which Chrysler is expanding in Europe. At the moment, only the Dodge Caliber and Viper are for sale in Europe.

But the Nitro medium SUV and Avenger upper-medium sedan will follow this year.

Chrysler began its international push in 2003, when the Crossfire sports car was introduced. From 2003 through this year, Chrysler will have grown from nine models sold outside the US to 20 and from six right-hand-drive offerings to 18.

The biggest increase has been in diesel, where Chrysler has grown from four models to 16, says Thomas Hausch, director of international sales and marketing for the Chrysler group.

Dodge accounted for roughly 15 percent of Chrysler's international sales in 2006, Chrysler brand for about 44 percent; Jeep for 41 percent.

Dodge sells some vehicles in Latin America and the Middle East that it will not sell in Europe, including the Charger sedan, Durango SUV and Ram full-sized pickup.

Of the large rear-drive products, Chrysler sells only the 300C sedan and station wagon in Europe. The Dodge Magnum and Charger will not be sold there.
